...and I say khoritho. Because it's RIGHT. That's how ACTUAL SPANISH PEOPLE say it because it COMES FROM SPAIN.
So why do you look pityingly at me as though I'm some kind of illiterate imbecile, and get me to repeat it, several times, before you say, triumphantly, 'Oh, tchoritso!' like you've just cracked the fucking Enigma Code?
And it crosses my mind, fleetingly, that perhaps my life would have been easier if sometimes I'd chosen to be wrong instead of weird.

I live in rural Brazil, trying to get caipiras (rednecks) to speak English is funny. Facebook is facebookie or just face, youtube is youchoobie and Apple is Apehole. I have given up explaining that the colour Red is neither hedge nor head. DD 11 was asked recently in school to say something in English, so she did. Then her classmate said to say it like Brazilians do, so she did and they said "you sound like you're speaking Japanese" to which she replied "well exactly". Grin

I lived in Brazil for 2 years, still fluent, when I wa out and about in London, Brazilian friends and I would find it hilarious to pronounce the London tube stations like Brazilians would

Higgy Barné anyone?

Also had a hilarious time when an Angolan was bitching about the entire tube carriage ... and when he got to me, I reminded him that Portuguese was spoken by people of all colours and appearances

The look on his face was priceless He visibly paled, just a tad 😂

Oh God, scarred for life trying to pronounce paella to my Spanish boyfriend. I was 19 and living in Mallorca for a summer (I'm English). He'd cry laughing at my shit pronunciation! I'd swear I was copying him sound-for-sound, but even after months of trying I just couldn't do it Sad

He was Mallorcian, and he and his family used to take the piss out of people on the telly from the North of Spain due to their accents. I guess it's just like in the UK; our accents vary massively from region to region so some sound funny to us.
