This is about London so no comments on how crap and expensive it is from non Londoners.

Aibu to get annoyed when people describe places that aren't London as London?
Sidcup and Bromley are in Kent!
Croydon is in Surrey!
Stratford is Essex!

Living in these areas is suburban. It's not living in London is very different it's suburban living.

Yes the tube map is huge just because it's on the tube doesn't make it London the metropolitan line goes to something like zone 6 I think it's further away than Brighton is the other way.

You need to get a clue about a map of London! Stratford definitely is London. It's in the borough of Newham. Also have you heard of Greater London? You are being ridiculous

AndShesGone · 24/02/2017 12:42

Would we say Heathrow was in London? That's zone 6.

It's so bloody big it feels like a town all of its own

SEsofty · 24/02/2017 12:43

And Middlesex hasn't existed for decades, apart from as a cricket team

AuntJane · 24/02/2017 12:55

I live in the London Borough of Bromley, close to the London Borough of Croydon. I think the clue's in the London Borough bit.

SailAwayWithMeHoney · 24/02/2017 12:57

I am in Kent... I've always regarded Bromley and Sidcup as part of London. Also Bexley I instantly think "London". And Erith aswell. google tells me they're all Greater London Confused

RedSauce · 24/02/2017 13:15

The point is, whether Bromley is technically a part of London or not, who cares? Why would it annoy you that somebody has a differing opinion on such a meaningless issue anyway?

muminthecity · 24/02/2017 13:18

I live in the London borough of Bromley. My postcode starts SE, my address has London, not Kent in it and I'm in zone 4.

Whatthefoxgoingon · 24/02/2017 13:27

I'd consider anyone with the postcodes of N,W,S,E,EC,SW etc etc to be in proper London, no question. Everything else is up for a bit of debate Wink

MrsMarigold · 24/02/2017 13:29

Croydon and Bromley might technically be London boroughs but the vibe is so suburban in these areas in my mind they just cannot be classified as London to me. I live in zone 2 and DH thinks its dreadfully suburban round here.

Bromley and Stratford are in London boroughs and their inhabitants vote for the mayor. So 100% London.

I do believe some of the Kent for Bromley confusion comes from the fact that the post office never updated postcodes properly so many parts of Bromley are still seen as Kent by the post office.
Similarly they still see most of Greater Manchester as either Lancashire or Cheshire when in fact the boundaries moved years ago.

DappledThings · 24/02/2017 13:34

If you get to vote for the London mayor you can say you live in London. That's my definition!

That includes various postcodes that are not traditionally London ones such as CR, KT, BR etc

Frazzled2207 · 24/02/2017 13:38

On a similar note technically "manchester" is quite small in terms of the borough but "greater manchester" is a total of 10 boroughs so the rest of us -including those who most definitely used to be in cheshire or lancs - are most definitely part of greater manchester.
We get a mayor too next year.

Goldenhandshake · 24/02/2017 13:40

Stratford is not Essex, not by a long shot

thecatneuterer · 24/02/2017 13:44

Stratford is London proper. Agree with the rest, but I can't say I really give a stuff.

kirinm · 24/02/2017 13:46

I live in zone 2 SE London and until 1889, I would've been part of Kent. But now definitely London.

Gowgirl · 24/02/2017 13:54

Stratford is London, but bloody miles from me in zone 2 west, but then I tend not to go farGrin

puttingbbts · 24/02/2017 13:57

Op went quiet because I was busy?

Yes an actual born and bred Londoner who was weaned on pie and mash and if somewhere is ten mins to somewhere else if you're timing from the train leaves the platform until it arrives at the next platform it's not the same place it's a train ride away

I guess I Abu to be annoyed by it as my being annoyed seems to annoy people even more. Ok Stratford isn't Essex it isn't London either. It's zone 2 but that's only to attract more businesses it's still out in the sticks. Not London not Essex a no mans land hell hole a giant primark and station to change lines and probably the worst place on earth.

empirerecordsrocked · 24/02/2017 13:59

Croydon was the original london airport.

I'm in Bromley, postal address is Kent.

HakeLively · 24/02/2017 14:03

Stratford has amazing transport links Confused it's not 'the sticks' at all. It's the opposite side of the city to me so frankly not a journey I'd be thrilled to do often but that's because I live on the other side... nothing to do with Stratford being inaccessible or 'not london'.

The80sweregreat · 24/02/2017 14:03

I;ve never understood Croydon ( no offence to anyone in Croydon, i;ve never been there ) but if you meet anyone from there they do tend to say Surrey.
I was talking to someone on holiday on the plane once and she was really annoyed that people thought she was london based - Croydon isnt london, she insisted. I really had no clue, and still dont!
I didnt know that Stratford was essex once though ( mid 19th century, but still!!) things you learn on here.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 24/02/2017 14:03

If you go by postcodes then Kew Gardens isn't in London even though it has its own Tube Station and is in a London Borough. Neither is Wembley Stadium.

Musicinthe00ssucks · 24/02/2017 14:04

Yes an actual born and bred Londoner who was weaned on pie and mash and if somewhere is ten mins to somewhere else if you're timing from the train leaves the platform until it arrives at the next platform it's not the same place it's a train ride away

What are you on about?

Fluffylittleraccoon · 24/02/2017 14:06

Stratford? That place that hosted a lot of the events in the London Olympics? Not in London? Really?

Yours, a Bromley dweller who voted for London mayor. If Bromley isn't in London, can I stop paying that London fire thing on my council tax bill?

HakeLively · 24/02/2017 14:06

Not getting the train thing OP.... I might ask DP who is a born and bred cockney but I suspect he'd say it was bollocks
