Settle a debate.
Dh wants to paint the front door. No problem, I've said he can do anything but white as it just looks common and tacky imo.
Would you believe it, white is the only colour he wants!

Sorry, Frilly, I don't think it is lighthearted to make fun of people who are poor. Calling human beings "trash" merely because of where they live is offensive.

Valentine2 · 23/02/2017 13:06

I sometimes wonder at the thought process of some of our fellow Mumsnetters. Weird enough, threads with "common" in their title, the ones by the OW/OM trying to get a flogging to feel good about themselves and some of the politician ones are among them. Hmm

Valentine2 · 23/02/2017 13:07

Sorry I should have give you a Biscuit OP.

PortiaCastis · 23/02/2017 13:08

Frilly you are extremely offensive.
Who are you to call folk 'binner' who do you think you are?

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 23/02/2017 13:08

gin yes of course you can have a posh estate! - but normally the posh estates consist of a Stately Home, Home Farm and several thousand acres😀

bellsandwhistles89 · 23/02/2017 13:12

I have a red door and although its very nice I would prefer a grey/blue door, not because I am posh (very common me) but I am in a bit of a grey/blue phase.

IWantATardis · 23/02/2017 13:13

Just about every house round where I live has a white door. Including mine.

Its very common thing in the very popular sense of the word here. So popular that it makes it impossible to pin the inhabitants of a white doored house into any social class.

LadyPW · 23/02/2017 13:14

White pvc - don't go there. It just looks wrong. Not common or tacky, just unfinished somehow. White paint - okay but like someone else said (I'm still reading page 1!) it'll show the dirt (and maybe turn yellow!)

Gwilt160981 · 23/02/2017 13:15

You must have too much time on your handd

GahBuggerit · 23/02/2017 13:15

Frillys on a wind up.

or one of the ones i feel sorry for, a Try Hard. But by Trying Hard actually putting themselves lower in the class system than the Trailer Trash Riff Raff.

PointxTaken · 23/02/2017 13:20

I do love the fact that some people chose their front door, not for their own taste, but based on what they believe others will think about them. Unless your house is an eyesore and cheapens the street, most normal people do not give a monkey about your door. Or your car. Or your handbag. You are not as important as you think for them to be bothered one way or another.

BreatheDeep · 23/02/2017 13:29

My front door colour was an accident. DH picked up the wrong tin of paint.

ginorwine · 23/02/2017 13:30

Through
That's what I meant ... but I got the impression that some folk thought housing estates were posh - which I just can't understand . The type of estates you mean are indeed posh tho .

SovietKitsch · 23/02/2017 13:31

I don't know about common but white UPVC is certainly ugly. We have a rather classy fucking awful rosewood effect UPVC front door...I'd love to get rid in favour of a nice painted hardwood door, but I've spent all my money on the aluminium bi-folds round the back... which look amazing even if PP think they mark me out as common Grin

ginorwine · 23/02/2017 13:32

Yes it's very 'common ' to call anyone ' common ' - so if op is calling folk common then what does that say about op? Rather hyacynthe bouquet ? 😜

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 23/02/2017 13:33

I wasn't brave enough to comment upthread when I first saw it Grin, but yes, i agree

augustbody · 23/02/2017 13:34

Of course you can get posh housing estates, although of course they are usually referred to as gated communities.

I used to live on one. And I had a white front door.

PointxTaken · 23/02/2017 13:35

I don't think we will see a photo of the OP front door, are we? Sad

Without looking, does everybody know the colour of their next door neighbours front door? I can guess mine, but I don't actually have a clue.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 23/02/2017 13:36

You can get expensive housing estates...

pinkunicornsarefluffy · 23/02/2017 13:36

A housing estate is classed as a group of houses that's have been planned and built at the same time and therefore have a similar appearance.

Surely this applies to most housing being built these days?

Does nobody on this thread live on an estate with other houses?

PointxTaken · 23/02/2017 13:37

Of course you can get posh housing estates, although of course they are usually referred to as gated communities.

only if you translate "posh" by "expensive". I thought that posh meant "upper class".

EightiethElement · 23/02/2017 13:41

I didn't know this but I don't like the combination of pvc and white. Some coloured composite front doors are lovely though.

Frillyhorseyknickers · 23/02/2017 13:42

GahBuggerit you can't get offended by me using the C word, and in the next breath list your interpretation of the class system - that's inverse snobbery and it's awful.

BreatheDeep · 23/02/2017 13:46

PointxTaken I know, I know! I live in a terrace of cottages though and we all have pastels except the one next to me that has.... whisper.... White! Shock horror! Grin

Frillyhorseyknickers · 23/02/2017 13:48

only if you translate "posh" by "expensive". I thought that posh meant "upper class".

They're country estates, and to be fair I think you'd struggle to find anywhere like Chatsworth rocking a white UPVC door.
