To think white front doors are common?

Settle a debate.
Dh wants to paint the front door. No problem, I've said he can do anything but white as it just looks common and tacky imo.
Would you believe it, white is the only colour he wants!

Oh quick. Let me just phone my landlord and demand he replaces my front & back doors for lowering the tone and offending sentiments.

SquarePegRoundHole · 22/02/2017 20:49

White doors are not common.

People who state that they are common have a touch of 'Mrs Bucket' about them Grin

SquarePegRoundHole · 22/02/2017 20:51

'Oh Riiiichard doooo paint that white door Chatsworth Grey' [Grin]

MooMooKerchu · 22/02/2017 20:53

I have a composite white front door as do all of the houses in our cul-de-sac. I'd actually like to change it to black but I'd be the odd one out. Still might!

I certainly don't look at houses with white doors and think common!!

If the front door had been kicked in, or if there was rubbish and crap strewn miles high all over the garden, or it looked like a rat infested wasteland, I might raise an eyebrow. White door........ not so much Hmm

EveOnline2016 · 22/02/2017 20:54

My front door is white, I need it to match the windows.

My window clearer come once a fortnight and washes it along with the windows.

ghostyslovesheets · 22/02/2017 20:58

mines white - UPVC - and probably as common as shite

came with the house - which I love

DameDoom · 22/02/2017 21:01

I am a total Hyacinth - when we bought our otherwise lovely house I had an attack of the vapours about the yellowing UPVC front door with bubbly half-glazed upper section and attractive stained glass house number motif. It went the week after we moved in.
Obviously, there are some delightful white doors but yellowing UPVC they are not.

MuseumOfCurry · 22/02/2017 21:03

I would love a red door but dh is having none of it. Grey will become common soon too. What else is left?

Stiffkey Blue.

loaferloveforyou · 22/02/2017 21:09

I've just realised I don't know the colour of my front door, it's either blue or green

It's blue. Thank fuck it's not white

SanityAssassin · 22/02/2017 21:12

Worrying about whether a particular door colour is "common" is not something people with real money or class do!

I LOVE green and a sage front door sounds great. I have real money - lots of it - class not so sure.

PhoebeGetsIt · 22/02/2017 21:16

I have a white front door and I've never thought of it as common although every door in my street is white ..... First world problem.
If you aren't that bothered let your DP have his front door white. Although now I think about it it's not very practical white is it?

EmeraldScorn · 22/02/2017 21:28

My door is black with chrome details (I love it) but I wouldn't have a problem with a white door providing it was cleaned as and when required (I hate grubby looking front doors).

However, it is rude to suggest that it's "common", maybe it's all someone can afford or perhaps per their lease they are not permitted to change it or maybe people have better things to be worrying about.

You sound stuck up!

BabychamSocialist · 22/02/2017 21:28

YABU to say common.

Personally, I have no issue with them. Our side door is a white UPVC and it looks lovely. Our front door is solid wood but I wouldn't paint it white as I can imagine it'd get dirty quickly and isn't as easy to wipe over as PVC. Our front door is painted purple though so maybe I have no taste.

Sonnet · 22/02/2017 21:32

Ha ha OP

I have a white front door - I have no choice in the matter as it is part of the listed regulations of the grade 2* listing of the property.
'Common' in the sense you mean we are not although white front doors are very common (as in there are a lot of them) round here
😂

Sonnet · 22/02/2017 21:33

Would love a purple front door Babycham Envy

TheNaze73 · 22/02/2017 21:35

YANBU. In most estate management areas, white doors & window frames are banned to maintain the street scene.

50ShadesOfEarlGrey · 22/02/2017 21:41

The 'Handsome and Commanding, more blue than black, Railings' is on my original front door, with its original cleaned every week so really shiney brass fittings. The door doesn't fit properly, the wind blows in through the gaps and lifts the Fired Earth Dunelm rug from the floor, and I would happily swap it for a naice white uPVC door that would keep us warm!

mrwalkensir · 22/02/2017 23:36

When we drive up to the Midlands, we go through whole villages with that sludgy sage colour for doors and windows - can only assume they're all terrified that white is common. We've got white pvc as that's what was there when we bought the house and it suits it (and it's cozy) and we've not had time/money to think about it. Must admit have never thought (until now) about any door colour being common. 50shadesofearlgrey MIL has a very lovely draught excluder that is a row of sheep...

wifeyhun · 22/02/2017 23:38

Lol only on mumsnet is my white front door common.

I do think red would rather suit it.

RubbishMantra · 22/02/2017 23:58

I think YABU to use common in the context that I think you're using it, - ie. looking down on people in a Bucket-I'm-more-middle-class-than-you sort of way.

I do look at the house opposite to mine, and wish I'd had my front door painted in the same lovely putty colour as theirs' though, instead of navy blue.

Then I just put the thought in the Fuckit Bucket...

LoisWilkersonsLastNerve · 23/02/2017 00:05

Another white door owner here,I had no idea I was common until I joined mn but guess what? I don't care! My next door shall be leopard print.

Dothehokeykokey · 23/02/2017 00:07

Racist!

RubbishMantra · 23/02/2017 00:12

On further thought, I may paint it metallic gold. Just in case Judge Judgiehoikeypants ever drives past my house and exclaims, "Oi, ain't that common!". Grin

Ohyesiam · 23/02/2017 08:49

Farrow and Ball has 14 shades of white.

I expect.

StorminaBcup · 23/02/2017 08:55

If you're going for sage green, OP then judging by the houses around here it must have a cream wicker heart to accompany it! But that's a whole other MN thread. Grin
