Dh wants to paint the front door. No problem, I've said he can do anything but white as it just looks common and tacky imo.

You're right. It's been said before but real UC people and WC people get on far better and have a lot more in common because really aristocratic people tend to be brought up as landowners meaning they get their hands dirty and don't really do all the airs and graces. It's MC people who are trying desperately to appear posh and think certain things are common. Blimey, most of the old aristocratic houses are crumbling and in disrepair. Even the Queen's private living room at Balmoral has a gas fire, reclining armchair and a tartan carpet. How common!

White pvcu doors are very old fashioned and nasty looking. There was a white wooden door on our 1930s street that looked odd but new owners quickly painted it green and it looks much better.

Mines white pvc, I've never really given it much thought. I like the sage green doors but they strike me as a fad, they're also popping up all over so I dare say they will soon be considered common.
Personally, I think a wooden door painted black looks smart and classic, but I dont think I care enough to shell out for a new one.
I will remain common.

Seems you might be a bit buggered - 4 new council housing developments have just been completed near me. They have french navy, red, sage green and black front doors.
Maybe go for purple glitter, us common council tenants won't have that :-)

My 'common' white door is hardwood, cost almost £3000, has £000's of reclaimed door furniture on it, and was built especially for our house, along with the Georgian fanlight above it, as a replica for the existing one.

We had to have a replica as our goddamn common white door is part of our grade II listed house, which is also white. And due to planning laws we cannot have anything but a common white door.

Yes and no. If it is UPVC, white plastic is trailer trash common, yes.

If it is wooden, painting it white is OK, probably look better eggshell than gloss. It's not ideal though, is it front, back or side?

Tacky? It would depend on your door furniture. The colour itself is not tacky.
