Oh hell. My baby is 9 weeks old. We've had sex twice since she was born. Past 3 days I've had every symptom of pregnancy but thought there is no chance. I had a preg test in my bathroom cupboard so thought I'd do it just to ease my mind. Low and behold I'm pregnant.

I am in complete shock. It took us 3 years and fertility treatment to get our baby so this is a huge huge huge surprise.

Please tell me it'll be ok.

just saying no and walking off is a bit rude for me as it's generally well meaning older ladies, so I find saying Irish twins with a smile is a more pleasant response!

How about saying "no" with a smile? thats pleasant. Or "no there are X months between them" and smile. I never suggested walking off. I really don't understand the need to lie to appear pleasant!

I get one's point ( I get sick of men making nasty comments about women and saying it's "just a joke") but if I'm virtually Irish I can use Irish twins and it's never been an offensive phrase particularly - it's just come into the English language meaning having two babies within a year and it's only offensive if you think having babies close together is bad. As my Catholic mother always used to say - it's the good girls (including single girls) who have the babies (which itself is I suppose a slightly anti abortion comment)

I have 10 Months between dc2 and 3 and by time dc4 came I had 3 under 2.5.

It's been tricky at times ( mainly the lack of sleep) and 2 of those 3 have SN so it's been a journey! However they are lovely little things and very close

I fell pregnant with my second when the first was 4 weeks old! So ten months between them and both in the same year . It was great and you will be fine x

Can't believe how this thread has been hijacked! Congratulations, I've no advice because mine are so close together. But after struggling, you must feel so blessed

Wow! You'll have an under year gap in same school year if in England! Congrats. Mine are 20 months apart and it def made things easier as they've grown up in terms of interests. Hard at first though.

Can't bring myself to read all the posts but if it helps mine are 16 months apart (youngest is 1 next month) - crikey it's been hard work but so rewarding and on a practical level you do find a way to make it work. You'll quickly settle into a routine (that will change every week or so!) and it gets easier as time goes on. Oh and I bought a bugaboo donkey and can honestly say it was the worst baby purchase I have made, shockingly expensive, poor quality and very uncomfortable for my older one. I've already replaced it and like my joie twin aire so much more and it was £140 not £1400!

This made me chortle OP, we had a set of twins when we also had a thirteen month old. It'll be grand. You're going to be knackered but it's worth it in the end. Congratulations

Really? Mine are quite happy thank you. And they have all the time, attention and love they need. As does their brother.

I nkow a lot of Irish people and I doubt many would be worried about the phrase Irish twins particularly as the Irish being Catholic would tend to have more children than the English so it's probably factually accurate anyway.

You see, that is the problem.
It's stereotyping, and if you don't have a problem with stereotyping then you should have one.

Anyway for it to be an insult you would have to think having babies is bad, whereas they are cute, gorgeous cuddly lovely things.

So why do the English have fewer of them?

enormous I am sure you didn't mean anything buy saying I qualify as my great grandparents are Irish is fine I suppose on one level.
However as someone born in Ireland having lived in the UK all my life I have had to defend things like. " someone with an Irish accent in their football team. That's a 1St."
Sorry op for hijack. You will be fine. I have friends in this situation English/Welsh and they were fine.

I have 15 months between 1 and 2 and then dc 2 and 3 are 7.5 months apart. They are in the same school year, dc 1 is the year above. It was exhausting and mental when they were small particularly as dc3 was obviously premature, but I wouldn't change it for the world. It has lots of advantages, built in friends, they like the same things so days out are easier etc. You will survive!!

Crikey! Hope you're ok x sounds shocking and exciting all rolled into one. Haveing just given birth myself for the 3rd time I can't imagine what's going through your mind to have discovered this so soon!!!! Congratulations are in order I guess, good luck xx

When my 5th baby was born I also had a 12 month old, a 3 year old, a 5th year old and a 7 year old, (all boys)!

Yes, it was hard at the beginning but it was lovely to watch them all together and we got through it with a few grey hairs. We had planned not to have big age gaps and it did work for us.

Now 10 years later I sometimes look at them and wonder how we all survived but we did and you will too!!

All 5 still are very close and do share a couple of hobbies together! Hopefully that continues into adulthood!
