My baby is 9 weeks old and I'm pregnant again

Oh hell. My baby is 9 weeks old. We've had sex twice since she was born. Past 3 days I've had every symptom of pregnancy but thought there is no chance. I had a preg test in my bathroom cupboard so thought I'd do it just to ease my mind. Low and behold I'm pregnant.

I am in complete shock. It took us 3 years and fertility treatment to get our baby so this is a huge huge huge surprise.

Please tell me it'll be ok.

Oh OP, congratulations (envy envy envy Grin).

My two older DC are just over a year apart and it's bloody brilliant seeing them together. A friend has two boys 11 months apart and although she was horrified at first, wouldn't change a thing.

You're so blessed and it will be wonderful. Honestly, it will.

I also think some of the abortion comments on a thread like this are incredibly insensitively written. I don't get some people, I really don't.

bigbuttons · 22/02/2017 19:52

No, you don't. I think two babies almost a year apart would be much much easier than twins
guess that gives you the award for most suffering parent then.

mygorgeousmilo · 22/02/2017 19:52

Oh yes and get a bugaboo donkey if possible! Will make life so much easier and you can see them both

jcne · 22/02/2017 19:54

Abortion isn't a dirty word or an offensive, immoral act, people. This is Mumsnet not a red state.

midsummabreak · 22/02/2017 19:56

How lovely, congrats! My first two have a close gap, and I found it mostly gorgeous! Your baby has an instant long term playmate who is always over for a sleepover! I have a brother and sisters who all only had one, and they often were over when mine were young, so their child had a playmate.

Also wont lie about how busy close gap is.

  • I seem to remember changing the baby's nappy on toddler's birthday, then phone ringing. Took bare-bottomed baby with me, caught toddler with fridge open and about to put finger in his masterfully created teddy bear cake with soft icing. Phone still ringing. Just as I started to say 'leave cake'....Baby stated pooing runny poo all over myself, clothes, everywhere. I remember thinking 'so this is what a mum multitasking is all about' as I wondered I was going to coax upset toddler while cleaning baby and self and answer phone. I think that's when I stopped answering phone every time it rang

Bit dramatic since no one said that it was. I merely said that some of the abortion comments have been worded very insensitively given the thread.

Grenoble124 · 22/02/2017 19:59

I don't understand the offence with the Irish twins thing. I'm Irish. It's not offensive at all to me.

Doyoufeeluckypunk · 22/02/2017 19:59

You'll be fine, I've been where you are now and whilst shocking at first I have really enjoyed it. Their bond is incredible, and there is a lot to be said for getting it all done at once!

dingdongthewitchisdead1 · 22/02/2017 19:59

You will be fine! Congratulations 😍Flowers

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 22/02/2017 19:59

Yay ! I won't say Irish twins after that other thread but you will be fine ! Like twins ! Congrats xxxx

yolorolo · 22/02/2017 20:01

Congrats! It will be manic but amazing too. I have 12 months between ds1 and Dd it was tiring and a lot of fun, they are close now and play together. It can't have been too bad as I am pregnant with dc3 and will have 3 under 3. Do have some witty replies ready for the negative and snarky comments from friends and random strangers, it used to drive me mad.

sparkli · 22/02/2017 20:04

Congratulations! DD1 was 8.5 wks when I found out I was pregnant with DD2. They are now 16 & 17 and have always been close. DH is an identical twin and likens their relationship to his and BILs.

The midwife who delivered both girls told me they were 'Starlight Twins' and we all love this term.

We went on to have another 4DC and I had 4 under 5s at one point. You will be fine! They both potty trained together and learned to ride bikes together. The competition made them do things much earlier than their peers!

Babyroobs · 22/02/2017 20:06

I had 3 in 3.5 years. Had infertility problems with first one but got pregnant very easily with second and third was unplanned. Those early yeas were very hectic ( can't remember much really) but we survived.

EnormousTiger · 22/02/2017 20:06

If want to have it, then it will be fine. My 2nd and 3rd were in consecutive school years. Few people achieve Irish twins - born within 12 months, in same school year - even I did not manage that. We had 3 under 4 at one point and then had twins. It's all good. I do recommend working until going into labour though and returning to work full time within a few weeks for the good of the bank balance - chidlren are very expensive.

AYankinSpanx · 22/02/2017 20:10

I've just remembered that two sisters I was at school with were 11 months apart and in the same school year. They were both lovely, lovely people and very good friends.

I do remember not being able to work out how they weren't twins though, but I was only a kid Grin

MollyHuaCha · 22/02/2017 20:12

My three DCs are also very very close in age. It's lovely because you can do age appropriate activities and outings with them.

TescoCarrierBag · 22/02/2017 20:16

I had 3 children under 3. Don't know how it happened really Confused yet here I am - I made it through the first few years Smile

bunnylove99 · 22/02/2017 20:16

Congratulations OP. I'm sure you will cope fine. Think what a joy it is you have no 2 on the way without facing anxiety over your fertility issues again. I guess you will know now how easy no 3 might arrive now... Wink

FourKidsNotCrazyYet · 22/02/2017 20:18

It will be brilliant!! By the time baby 2 is crawling they will occupy each other and won't need you for play as much. I loved having them close! Not quite as close as you though! I'm so excited for you!!!!

Catlady1976 · 22/02/2017 20:20

Yes morning and that they are too thick to understand the meaning of the word twin.
If the poster of term wants an explanation than refer to the Google Search on here or view the other thread about it.

LaContessaDiPlump · 22/02/2017 20:20

13 month age gap here! Bit of a surprise but there you go. In retrospect I'm glad we got the baby years over and done with so quickly but hell it was hard work at times! They are 5.7 and 4.6 now and the best of friends/worst of enemies depending on day of the week.

Having said that I sometimes think it's easier being pregnant while the older one is still a baby because you don't have to chase them so much and they are lighter to carry Grin

I have attached a slightly anonymised photo of me, 2 weeks into DS2's life; you will have to imagine the tiredness but I am, incredibly, smiling!

Catlady1976 · 22/02/2017 20:21

Sorry posted too soon. Congratulations op wonderful news.

MollyGreen · 22/02/2017 20:21

I had a similar gap between 1 & 2 and as a pp said, being pregnant second time round so close and with another baby to look after was very very hard.

So hard that from the minute dc2 was born it did make it seem much easier to cope! Although that was with bad SPD and 2 secitions.

Seeing them grow up so close is brilliant, I cannot understand why anyone would chose a 3/4/5 year gap between kids . Everyone is different!

Why is Irish twins an offensive thing to say?

Because it singles out Irish people as an ethnicity more likely than others to be breeding like rabbits, Irish women ignorant about contraception, Irish men only interested in one thing. It reinforces a stereotype, which like most stereotypes is a grotesque misrepresentation of reality.

It's not just a figure of speech any more than the Duke of Edinburgh's many foot in mouth remarks about many other people were just 'figures of speech'.

I am Irish and I never heard this phrase until I moved to the US, which says something about it.
