Dp kicked out cat

Name changed. Massively identifying.

So, I had a cat before we got together. Now 7 years later, living together with a dc.

Cat is quite annoying in a cat way (around your legs for food etc) which is a bit of a pain but manageable. But, he's started being sick a lot after food which dp is sick of cleaning up (whoever spots it cleans it so I clean it up too) and of course not great for dc - although I use disinfectant etc.

Basically I'm sad about it. The cat flap has been taken away & the cat only comes indoors for food. He has the shed for shelter/warmth. I don't want to put up a fight because then I'll feel anxious if/when the cats sick and feel responsible for his anger. I am taking him to the vet so hopefully it'll stop the sickness but think dp is done now.

I just feel sad. AIBU?

Don't ever have a pet again!!

ilovesooty · 04/02/2017 21:02

You're not scared of him but you're unable to stand up to him and would rather submit your cat to exclusion and neglect?

RainyDayBear · 04/02/2017 21:03

This would be a deal breaker for me! I would keep the cat and loose the DP.

Parker231 · 04/02/2017 21:03

Why does your DP get to make the decision about the cat being kicked out? Are you not allowed a say?
The weather is horrible - go and bring it back in the warm and dry.

Sparklingbrook · 04/02/2017 21:04

The cat must be very confused that the catflap has been 'taken away'. How do you take away a cat flap though? Did your DP buy a whole new door or just lock the catflap shut? Sad

Wolfiefan · 04/02/2017 21:04

FFS. Cat needs to see a vet. ASAP!
Is cat on dry food? How old?
Can't cat be inside but shut out of bedrooms etc?

FeckTheMagicDragon · 04/02/2017 21:04

The cat is not making you feel sick and anxious. Your DP is. Youa re afraid of him getting annoyed. Why?

You cat is getting older, and is bolting her food - and then throws up. How much are you putting down? cats like to be fed smaller quantaties several times a day. is she guarding it from other cats? does she feel secure when shes eating? I had a similar problem (two cats). I switched to senior food, and got a timed feeder - smaller quantities, several times a day. Is it dried food or wet? Dried food tends to swell after eating. try scattering it around in a few different places.

And if none of that works, get rid of your DP. People who are mean to small, dependant animals will be mean to other peopel if they think they can get away with it.

LucklessMonster · 04/02/2017 21:05

Your partner is a cunt.

Put him in the shed and take the cat to the vets ASAP.

sandragreen · 04/02/2017 21:06

Bloody well go out there now and bring the cat back in. Your DP sounds like an abusive arsehole and you sound like some kind of gibbering wreck with no say in your own life.

Is this the tip of the iceberg?

Start sorting this out - start with the cat.

Pumpkintopf · 04/02/2017 21:06

Agree with others. Bring cat inside and stand up for cat/yourself!

You need to be strong, stand up to your DP and bring your cat inside ASAP - the poor thing is probably breaking its heart stuck in your shed and feeling poorly.

If you have difficulty standing up to your DP, do you have a friend/family member who could support you?

Please do let the cat back in, whatever it takes.

diddl · 04/02/2017 21:06

I don't understand why it's his decision to make about your cat?

And surely the point of a cat is that it's a pet in the house with you-unless it chooses to be outside most of the time?

And even so, it probably wouldn't choose to sleep in a shed this time of the year?

He sounds a horrible bully & you sound scared of him-how are yiu going to get him to move out?

FeckTheMagicDragon · 04/02/2017 21:07

and if you struggle to articulate, decide what you want to do and state it. refuse to discuss it. 'Its cruel to the cat, the cat flap is to be left open. its not up for discussion.'

bertsdinner · 04/02/2017 21:07

I would try and rehome the cat. To be honest, I'd kick out the partner, but failing that it's unfair on the cat to live in the shed after having a home for so long, it must be really stressed out. So rehoming would be better for the cat.
I don't like the sound of your partner.

AyeAmarok · 04/02/2017 21:08

I think it's quite despicable that you're considering rehoming your cat rather than your horrible DP.

But if you do, I hope the poor thing ends up with someone who loves it.

Pumpkintopf · 04/02/2017 21:08

What happened to the cat flap??

Writerwannabe83 · 04/02/2017 21:08

Your poor, poor cat.

If your child gets an illness that is an 'inconvenience' will they be relegated to live in the shed too?

The thought of your cat all alone in a cold shed, unwell and confused as to why he's not allowed in his home anymore is really, really upsetting.

Sparklingbrook · 04/02/2017 21:08

How does he cope if the children are sick on the carpet?

BreakfastAtStephanies · 04/02/2017 21:09

OP - I have had a couple of large glasses of wine and this made me cry.

Does the cat need worming ? Agree get it checked by the vet.

Please get cat back in the warm asap. I recommend 2001 carpet mousse/foam when cleaning up. It smells really nice.

I shut my cat in the garage by mistake the other day for 8 hours. He'd followed me in there when I got something out of the freezer. He was very glad to come back inside and see us again after that, and he's not usually over-friendly.

TheWitTank · 04/02/2017 21:10

WTF? Your animal is regularly vomiting and you haven't thought it should see the vet -its just shut outside so you don't have to deal with it. I can't STAND things like this. It's a living creature, has been an indoor cat for years, and is now expected to adapt immediately and without compromise to living in a cold shed while it is clearly unwell. Your DH is a dick. Bring the cat in and make a vet appointment.

Wolfiefan · 04/02/2017 21:10

BTW. Our boy cat had cancer of the gut. On medication he got a lot better but still have horrid runny poo accidents.
DH didn't shut him out. We bought a special cleaner.

LazySusan11 · 04/02/2017 21:10

Sorry but I couldn't be with anyone who treated an animal like that. Says an awful lot about him. Bin your dp cruel bastard.

EweAreHere · 04/02/2017 21:10

It's your home, too, and you have a responsibility to take care of your pet. I don't see how kicking a pet out for getting sick is taking care of your pet. It's not well, it's older, so the answer is to make it less comfortable outside where it will be colder and alone?

Poor thing. Your DH sucks. But you've gone along with him!
