Dp kicked out cat

Name changed. Massively identifying.

So, I had a cat before we got together. Now 7 years later, living together with a dc.

Cat is quite annoying in a cat way (around your legs for food etc) which is a bit of a pain but manageable. But, he's started being sick a lot after food which dp is sick of cleaning up (whoever spots it cleans it so I clean it up too) and of course not great for dc - although I use disinfectant etc.

Basically I'm sad about it. The cat flap has been taken away & the cat only comes indoors for food. He has the shed for shelter/warmth. I don't want to put up a fight because then I'll feel anxious if/when the cats sick and feel responsible for his anger. I am taking him to the vet so hopefully it'll stop the sickness but think dp is done now.

I just feel sad. AIBU?

By outside I mean feral. Ours used to love spending a lot of time outside when younger, but he loves that he can come and go with his cat flap.

Maybe it depends on the cat, like us, they're all different. I knew someone who had a very large (fat!) neutered tom who had perennial struvite problems whatever food he ate, and eventually had to have emergency surgery to change his plumbing so he peed like a female cat. He didn't have any more problems after that. He wasn't an active cat, curled up in the catmint rather than chasing mice was his style. Does that make a difference, do you think?

His owner is a cat expert, manager of a cat refuge, numerous cats (and dogs) of her own, fostered more. She feeds dry food if the cats like it. It's true, I think that male cats are more vulnerable, but am not sure whether it's just the length of their plumbing, or different hormones.

Don't you just love it when posters wade in with their advice. Late. Because they cannot be arsed to read a thread to see the situation has long been resolved Grin

Our cat throws up if fed some types of seafood.

He gets half a pouch of wet food am and the other half pm. Our vet has advised that male cats shouldn't be fed only dried food.

We put dried food in a treat ball for him to bat about. Not all cats will use one of these, DDs cat just looks at it then walks away.

We have several water bowls around the house to encourage him to drink more.

I thought dry only could lead to crystals in their urine?

Cats do currently have a water bowl and use it.

If it's what they'll eat and it's reputable food - yes. But they must have fresh water at all times. Cats normally get what water they need from their food. We have to take on that responsibility when feeding dry food but how many times have you seen your cat drinking out of a puddle? What's in those little walnuts cats have for brains?

I only give my cat dry food. She is on Purina and is now about 14 so it seems to be ok to do so.

Our vet knows and has never said anything about needing to giver her wet food too.

Is it ok to feed a cat just on dry food? I didn't think it was?

One of my cat still pukes quite a bit with wet food. It's better now we've swapped foods but still happens quite a bit. Never pukes on dry food but we feed both at the minute because I thought you had to feed some wet?

The cat probably ate fast because it is scared of your not particularly 'dear' partner/husband. It might also be the food -perhaps needs a change of food. I won't say you need a change of partner but...

BorrowedHeart since I imagine you may be addressing me - what part of "agree to differ" are you struggling with understanding?

Though i do admit mine do love some of the fishy applaws pots ( treats very occasionally!)

Meridien that's why i said encore, it's basically the same product.

Report
ilovesooty · 05/02/2017 12:17

I have, BorrowedHeart. I beg to differ on the interpretation issue.

Report
Meridien · 05/02/2017 12:14

Applaws is unreasonably expensive!! Looking at the ingredients, I could make it up myself cheaper and without so much water. I'll look out for Encore.

BorrowedHeart · 05/02/2017 12:14

There is no need to 'interpret' if you actually read what the op has typed.

Report
kali110 · 05/02/2017 12:06

Op id try diff food. My cats didn't respons well to that one!
Encore is very good, mainly natural ingredients ( it's a cheaper version of applaws, same thing but sold in supermarks so half the price)

He naps in here but bloody loves being outdoors. His favourite hobby is bird chasing (and one stressful summer liked to bring them indoors, alive, to carry on the fun)
