David Beckham's leaked emails

I thought he came across rather well on Desert Island disks the other day, but AIBU to be glad that DB has been exposed?

I've always regarded the Beckhams as a textbook example of much that's wrong with our celeb-culture, accumulating vast wealth and renown on the coat-tails of very mediocre talent.

Now it seems the charitable work was all in aid of securing a knighthood.

He does have reason not to like KJ though. Announcing that she was not having an affair with him when nobody thought she was just to get PR for herself. Didn't she have a record out at the time?

And I hate it when people like PM announce someone is 'nice'. Of course they're nice to you, you're really fucking famous and they're not going to put it out on Twitter or your TV shows if they're a cunt. It's how they treat people like bar staff and waiters that matter.

And in fairness I have always heard a lot of fairly decent stuff about how DB treats ordinary people.

KingMortificadosMistress · 04/02/2017 12:22

Ah! This is interesting. I thought it was just a report of a leak. Apparently not:

twitter.com/piersmorgan/status/827646390419480576

This explains why it is being reported so prominently here. If it was just a leak, legally there would be too much risk to print it at all (because as noted above the risk of the whole thing being faked and altered). If underlying it was an investigation by another media organisation puts a whole different complexion on it from a legal point of view.

BillSykesDog · 04/02/2017 12:25

If they have been altered, why hasnt he called in their Lawyers?

It's not really as simple as that though is it? For a start he may well not know who they are, and even if he does they may well not be UK based so not in a position where he can take legal action against them. For example if they're in Russia, some Balkan states, some Middle Eastern countries there's fuck all he could do legally.

BillSykesDog · 04/02/2017 12:27

That's really interesting. Wonder if any French Mumsnetters have links pretty please

KingMortificadosMistress · 04/02/2017 12:29

It's not really as simple as that though is it?

Er ... yes... anyone who repeats a libel or publishes it, can be sued if it's not true. It is not just the original source. They don't need to go after the hackers; they can sue anyone who publishes allegations that are untrue.
This was the reason Sally Bercow got into trouble on Twitter about Lord McAlpine.

Werkzallhourz · 04/02/2017 12:30

I suspect this is a leak, rather than a hack. Someone has just got sick of him.

And I am really not surprised. He's a vile bloke. The one I really feel for is Victoria. I'm not an obsessed fan of hers or anything, but she just doesn't deserve it.

It also says a lot about our honours system that people feel it can be played for financial and commercial gain in this manner. I really think it is about time the honours system was throughly revised and rebooted. We ought to put more focus on celebrating those that contribute to civic life at significant cost to themselves.

noeffingidea · 04/02/2017 12:39

He does come across as being desperate for a knighthood. I can't think why, tbh. These days it's seen as much cooler to turn one down.

southeastdweller · 04/02/2017 12:46

It'd be good for Brand Beckham, I think.

noeffingidea · 04/02/2017 12:48

southeast see, that kind of attitude makes me like him less, really. Brand Beckham has already done fantastically well. Why does he (or they) need more?

noblegiraffe · 04/02/2017 12:50

Salacious tittle-tattle for people to pore over and pretend it's in the public interest.

Not sure it's much different to people who looked at the hacked pics of naked celebrities.

FineLookingHighHorse · 04/02/2017 12:52

He's just a footballer who married a girl group member. (and then fucked their PA)

Why anybody expects any better from him is quite frankly baffling.

11122aa · 04/02/2017 12:54

I expect we will hear Victoria OBE is revoked soon or she 'voluntary' relinquish's it.

BillSykesDog · 04/02/2017 12:55

Er ... yes... anyone who repeats a libel or publishes it, can be sued if it's not true.

Yes, but Sally Bercow made references to things which were not in the public domain at the time. A BBC Newsnight report had made reference to a 'senior Tory figure' with no name. But people started referencing McAlpine's name on Twitter (and this is the important bit) when it was not available elsewhere.

But when something like this, the Sony hacks or the Wikileaks stuff happens then it's already in the public domain so repeating it as an 'allegation' does not legally compromise the publishers.

11122aa · 04/02/2017 12:55

Through I am not sure what French media would have to investigate him for. He lived there for about 6 months at most.

BillSykesDog · 04/02/2017 12:56

And yes you can repeat a libel if you make clear it is 'alleged' and the claim is already in the public domain.

Stylinson · 04/02/2017 13:03

He is not faithful to Posh

BillSykesDog · 04/02/2017 13:05

11122aa, he played there in 2013. During that period France had a 75% income tax on the super rich.

Beckham donated his entire PSG salary to UNICEF. But presumably this was some sort of tax dodge which meant he wasn't classed as a French resident for tax purposes and therefore didn't have to pay 75% tax on his other income for sponsorship etc during that period. So the apparently altruistic gesture during his time at PSG was in fact a tax dodge.

I suspect that the French angle is probably coming at it very much looking at the tax dodging side. Possibly looking at various ways that the UK tax system allowed the 75% tax to be dodged in France and ultimately abandoned? Particularly in light of recent noises the UK government has made about making the UK a tax haven if the EU don't play nice over Brexit.

That is the high minded reason.

The low minded reason is that the French love a celeb getting caught with their tops off or their pants down or doing something naughty just as much as the British do. And their press still lets them publish it.

Believeitornot · 04/02/2017 13:14

I bet the Daily Mail are rubbing their hands in glee.

How many have clicked on the link and continued to assist the success of an awful website and newspaper.

BillSykesDog · 04/02/2017 13:16

Wow believe, what an interesting contribution. Nobody has ever thought of saying anything like that before, what a good job you managed to make the point before it got really fucking tedious!

parrots · 04/02/2017 13:27

It's not just in the Mail, it's all over the place. Brand Beckham's PR team will certainly be earning their fees today. I note that ITV is now 'on message'

I don't know if the emails are true or not. However the snobbery on here about the Beckhams is pathetic. On a teacher course a few years back I met one of his ex teachers. She said he wasn't 'thick' and was particularly good at maths.
There is also snobbery about football. It is played by oiks and supported by oiks apparently. Not in the 2010s it's not.
Katherine Jenkins is odious.

exLtEveDallas · 04/02/2017 13:42

Can I just check - the people on this thread that think it's ok that DB's emails have been hacked, are you also ok with Milly Dowlers phone? Sara Payne's email?

BillSykesDog · 04/02/2017 13:47

Er. The papers don't appear to have been the hackers in this situation.

FabulouslyGlamourousFerret · 04/02/2017 13:53

I reckon Becky Bog is at the heart of this, the pig wanking trout RUINED my illusions of him!! 🐽

BillSykesDog · 04/02/2017 13:54

And, yeah. I think there is a bit of a difference, morally, between accessing the private communications of victims of crime and those who are only in the public eye because of horrendous events, and those of ruthless self promoters who have courted press attention for decades because of dubious tax affairs and misleading the public re philanthropic activities.

I think if you can't really see the difference between the two then...I can't really say what I want to say because I don't want to get banned. But apparently the MN sanctioned way of describing it is that you are 'a bit of a silly sausage'.
