David Beckham's leaked emails

I thought he came across rather well on Desert Island disks the other day, but AIBU to be glad that DB has been exposed?

I've always regarded the Beckhams as a textbook example of much that's wrong with our celeb-culture, accumulating vast wealth and renown on the coat-tails of very mediocre talent.

Now it seems the charitable work was all in aid of securing a knighthood.

exLtEve I don't think anyone is particularly ok about it. Unfortunately though, the possibility of being hacked is pretty much a fact of life now, for all of us, not just celebrities. Better get used to it, and be careful what you say.

exLtEveDallas · 04/02/2017 14:01

No, I can't see a difference at all. He is a human being, a footballer, a minor celeb. Someone's dad, someone's husband, someone's child.

He's not a murderer, a despot, a child abuser or criminal.

He has a right to private communication, as do you, as do I, as did Milly Dowler or Sara Payne. As does everyone. Even someone as despicable as Trump,or Pence or even bloody Nigel Farage.

What has happened to him is criminal. It shouldn't be a source of amusement or gossip. I choose not to take part as I have higher standards than that. I'm quite happy to be a 'silly sausage' Grin. What you choose of course is completely up to you.

Julia2016 · 04/02/2017 14:05

How can people keep saying he is always having affairs?? Surely some evidence would have come up by now? No way he could have avoided a kiss and tell if he was having so many affairs.

parrots · 04/02/2017 14:14

@exLtEveDallas, he's not a minor celeb though, and he's someone who profits from self-promotion and publicity. Examples of his behaviour are outlined in the BlackSea link, which looks like part of an investigation which may even be published in the Sunday Times tomorrow.

According to this report, DB agreed to visit a UNICEF project in Asia because it was good for his charitable image. He then managed to arrange it so that the visit would coincide with paid sponsorship activities for luxury hotels and drinks companies. One of these sponsors provided a private jet to get him there, so DB decided to invoice UNICEF for the £6k they would have had to spend on business class flights if he hadn't been provided with the jet.

According to the report, DB was also quite insistent about not wanting to donate his own money to charity, even a fund set up in his own name, going against the advice of his own PR people.

He comes across as incredibly greedy and self-serving. Mind you, with the likes of Philip Green among the ranks of the knighted, perhaps DB would make a perfect candidate

Is it wrong that I feel unable to care much about this?

So what if his main motivation is a Knighthood (although I find it unlikely TBH)? Does the suddenly mean that the charity work he's done over the years has no value? Has he raised any less money?

I'm not sure why he's chosen to mention Katherine Jenkins of everyone, given the previous affair allegations. You'd think he'd keep his mouth shut about her - although I'd agree that there have been several awards handed out to people for no real visible reason. He probably could have made the exact same point about somebody else.

I'm not a Beckham fan (either Mr or Mrs) but really can't see why this is so bad. We are all entitled to private thoughts, which is exactly what private e-mails are supposed to be.

Whydidwedoit4times · 04/02/2017 14:18

I think the beckhams are great and I expect you don't live the life of a saint so stop criticising.

It's probably made up bollocks anyway and crap but even if it's true hacking and publishing private emails is vile unless it's in the public interest.

This isn't. Go back to reading heat magazine.

If indeed DB made those plans himself it would be a reflection on his personality, I agree. He employs folk to arrange schedules and make travel plans for him though doesn't he? He doesn't negotiate his own contracts does he? I thought that was what Managers were for.

parrots · 04/02/2017 14:23

From the same report

*However, the leaked emails show that Beckham did not act like a puppet for his advisers when it came to the charity work. He would often be stubborn about how much time he would devote to Unicef and was determined not to pay his own money to the charity.

In February 2014, he emailed his right-hand man Gardner to say he’d been contacted by one of his directors at DB Ventures who was unhappy that the company was contributing towards his Unicef trip the following week. Beckham was visiting the Philippines to meet children affected by Typhoon Haiyan.

Beckham wrote:“I totally agree to be honest there’s no way it should be costing me anything”.*

He is a thick as fuck, whiney voiced, overrated, scribbled on, faithless bastard."

BillSykesDog · 04/02/2017 14:26

Everyone does have a right to private communication. But yes I do think you are a silly sausage if sometimes you can't see that a greater good is served by communications being intercepted and made public. To take your point to it's logical conclusion, the Enigma machines must have been a very bad thing because Hitler was somebody's son and somebody's husband.

And things like US war crimes have been exposed by technically illegal means.

So while the act of actually hacking might have been criminal, when it's done and the information is out there it's sort of up to the press to decide whether or not to publish it.

In this case, if the information is true then I think they've made exactly the right call. This isn't just him bumming people who aren't Posh Spice which affects nobody but her, it's him doing things like politically interfering to boost his own PR, not paying tax and manipulating NGOs for his own personal gain. All of which directly affect the public. So absolutely it that information is put out there the press are right to run with it, regardless of whether it makes his Mum feel a bit sad.

Morally the Dowler or Payne cases just aren't on the same compass.

BakeOffBiscuits · 04/02/2017 14:26

julia have you heard of Rebecca Loos?

Have you heard of the nanny who sold her story to the papers? She talked about the affairs and the rows.

derxa · 04/02/2017 14:28

He is a thick as fuck If that was the case he would have lost all of his money years ago.

BillSykesDog · 04/02/2017 14:32

So you think an NGO which has funds intended to help the most vulnerable children in the world being invoiced £6k by a multimillionaire for nothing? Is not in the public interest?

If this stuff is true, and it's looking increasingly like it is, he is finished.

Put it this way, he's never getting a knighthood now.

KathArtic · 04/02/2017 14:36

To be fair, I don't expect a charity to approach a celeb to promote their cause, and then expect them to pay their own expenses and donate a huge sum too.

Whydidwedoit4times · 04/02/2017 14:37

Yes but is it true? And of course he's not as thick as fuck

Sorry but think mumsnet should be above dubious and probably made up and twisted tittle tattle about celebrities. That's what the daily fail is for.

SeaWitchly · 04/02/2017 14:39

I can't believe he was given an OBE for 'Services to Football' [likewise Andy Murray for 'Services to Tennis'].
It's not bloody services to anything, they play professional sport at a high level and are amply rewarded with trophies, honours and financial gain.
I am disgusted in any sports player being made a Sir or a Dame tbh.

southeastdweller · 04/02/2017 14:42

southeast see, that kind of attitude makes me like him less, really. Brand Beckham has already done fantastically well. Why does he (or they) need more?

The money they've made clearly isn't enough, is it? By having a knighthood for DB, him (and the brand) can go on generating more money and publicity, for them and their kids - it helps the brand to be seen as 'clean' and aspirational.

CaraAspen · 04/02/2017 14:47

"derxa

He is a thick as fuck If that was the case he would have lost all of his money years ago."

That's a bit simplistic, surely. In a statement he used, "...I would of..." That is quite enough evidence for me. Haha

BakeOffBiscuits · 04/02/2017 14:49

He wants to be a "Sir" so he can use the title for more sponsorship deals.

He'll be putting "Sir David" on everything from football boots to underpants.Hmm

derxa · 04/02/2017 14:52

He was a great footballer. He's the only ex England footballer I remotely like.

Whydidwedoit4times · 04/02/2017 14:53

cara what a nasty sneering post. Many people use expressions like that and it can be colloquial doesn't make them thick.

I agree though that no one who excels at sport should get an honour. In my opinion honours should only he given to 'ordinary' people like nurses, care workers foster carers heroes etc.

JustSpeakSense · 04/02/2017 14:54

I don't like the Beckams, always pushing themselves forward into the limelight, and now doing the same with their kids. I found be it very distasteful. Advertising any charity work they do, trying to boost brand beckham at every opportunity.

And then we hear about all the discreet and private help George Michael offered countless individuals and charities over the years (with the only condition being he was not named).

Whydidwedoit4times · 04/02/2017 14:55

He was indeed a great footballer. Yes he had an affair but if his wife can get over that then it's no one else's business.

This is a spiteful thread

derxa · 04/02/2017 14:55

Cara I'm sure he's devastated about your opinion of him Grin
