to wonder what planet the 'ban Trump from the UK' people are living on

Yes I understand that he's a sexist, racist, whatever-else-ist.

But he evidently thinks fondly of the UK, we are currently in the process of saying 'fuck off' to mainland Europe, so we will be a small, friendless island in the North Sea in need of some help.

AIBU to think that we need to suffer a bit of schmoozing from dodgy foreign leaders as part of post-Brexit Britain? (Actually didn't we already schmooze dodgy foreign leaders long before Brexit?)

And in reality Trump is rather less dodgy than the average world leader, if we exclude the EU, as we have done

What are the other choices?

Cliched? Since when? Never seen the word used before today, and I'm here 10 years - I've seen it used an awful lot the past few days. It's like when a child learns a new word so they have to use it over and over and over, it's tedious for those who've been aware of the word for years. Grin

JenBehavingBadly · 31/01/2017 16:54

I'm living on the planet that remembers that appeasing dangerous rulers does nothing for the safety and security of the world.

TheSmurfsAreHere · 31/01/2017 16:54

Most presidents have been invited after they had been in power for a much longer time. Not within a week or two after taking the job.
That is just telling Trump that we are desperate for any crumbs at all. Which puts us in a very weak négociation potion if the idea is to negotiate with him.
Plus as Davis Davies said, we won't be able to négociée anything for another two years. So why the rush??
Why being seen by the rest of the world as 'one of his string supporters'? Are we really wanting to be seen as racist and as not caring about anyone else than us?
Do we even want to BE like this?

As fo 'well that's the only ally we have now'... well first this was the people choice wasn't it?
Or is it that actually we didn't have to as such (think soft Brexit) but someone (our non elected PM) decided so and did everything to ensure it would be the case (by pissing off all the other 27 countries that will have a say in the negotiations process)

DJBaggySmalls · 31/01/2017 16:55

If Trump thinks fondly of the UK we're doing something wrong.

Aside from rumors, what has Trump as president, actually done that is legally corrupt?

Issued an unlawful order then sacked his Attorney General when she did her job and told him it was unlawful?

Thakita · 31/01/2017 16:57

OP - people are being brainwashed by all this. Why didn't they all get upset when the Chinese Prime Minister was here? China's human rights area amongst the world's worst.

Mrskeats · 31/01/2017 16:58

Did someone actually as has Trump something that is legally corrupt??
Blimey the level of knowledge of current affairs some people have is staggering.
It does explain why we are in this mess though

Actually, it's growing on me.

I think I will try using it sometime.

Yes, you've understood the definition at last, well done you! Now if you could move on to why its a bad thing, you'll be able to get the point.

ARumWithAView · 31/01/2017 17:01

Slightly disturbing to think that you are unhinged enough to trawl through my previous posts to the extent you even know which smileys I have put, where (even I would be hard pressed to remember).

It takes absolutely no trawling to register your posting style. I've been on two threads with you today, and it's the same thing both times.

  1. sneering attempt to be pithy
  2. emoticon

At no point have you ever followed up anything you've said. Just chucked in some references to other human rights abuses (with all the deepfelt personal and political commitment of someone saying 'eat your bloody Spam and don't fuss, there's kids starving in Africa'), and countered with a witless 'calm down, dear' type comment. Then repeated yourself. What planet do you live on that you see global protests, national US condemnation of Trump (including from figures within his own party), and listen to the guy himself... and think, yep, we're onto a winner there, who could possibly object?

I think I did well . Grin

Why didn't they all get upset when the Chinese Prime Minister was here? China's human rights area amongst the world's worst.

First, how do you know they didn't?
Second, can you explain why people need to have protested everything remotely similar in the past in order to protest about something they care about now?

whatsthepointofmorgan · 31/01/2017 17:04

Sorry. I don't have time to read all that.
I have work.
Bye!

I signed because I like the thought of trump hearing that millions of people strongly dislike him.
I think together we send a message.

Why trump? Well according to the other petition the one that wants him to come - he is 'the leader of the free world' so that entitles us to speak surely: he and steve bannon and the alt right are supremely bad news for all of us, (oh except rich white male businessmen) he is volatile, racist and extremely dangerous - he needs to be challenged.
Of course Saudi Arabia and many countries are awful - do we want the us to be like those?
I imagine those going on saying what about other places were the kind to say to Nicholas winton, 'mate, why you bothering with the Jewish kids? There are kids everywhere who need help'.

They did.

Next question?

5moreminutes · 31/01/2017 17:11

Thakita people did get all upset about the Chinese state visit:

Chinese President Xi Jinping - 20-23 October 2015
There were clashes between human rights protesters and Chinese supporters during demonstrations ahead of Mr Xi's procession to Buckingham Palace with his wife Peng Liyuan. Police were forced to intervene and an 81-year-old Free Tibet protester was threatened with arrest after failing to move when officers asked her to. Mr Xi met Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall, though they chose not to attend the state banquet. The Prince has been critical of China's conduct in the past. Issues including cheap Chinese steel flooding the European market and crippling the UK steel industry and the security implications of allowing Chinese investment in nuclear power also plagued the state visit.
