to wonder what planet the 'ban Trump from the UK' people are living on

Yes I understand that he's a sexist, racist, whatever-else-ist.

But he evidently thinks fondly of the UK, we are currently in the process of saying 'fuck off' to mainland Europe, so we will be a small, friendless island in the North Sea in need of some help.

AIBU to think that we need to suffer a bit of schmoozing from dodgy foreign leaders as part of post-Brexit Britain? (Actually didn't we already schmooze dodgy foreign leaders long before Brexit?)

And in reality Trump is rather less dodgy than the average world leader, if we exclude the EU, as we have done

What are the other choices?

ClaudiaApfelstrudel · 31/01/2017 15:58

If he does come here, the melee and demonstrations that presumably will take place could be quite a uniting experience for the anti-Trump protesters.

JamieXeed74 · 31/01/2017 16:00

I personally value human rights over money
What human right? Being allowed to live in/work/visit America is not a human right?

trinketsofgold · 31/01/2017 16:01

So it's OK for Putin to come and meet our queen, but not Trump?

Who's trump murdered lately?

noeffingidea · 31/01/2017 16:01

rosehippy some of us just need to stand up and say something, rather than rolling over and wait to be shafted.
Yes this petition and these first demonstrations will have very little effect but bit by bit a message will be sent.
And Trump does care about public opinion, by the way. It's why he has temper tantrums and spats on twitter. If he does have a state visit it will be made unpleasant for him.

scaryclown · 31/01/2017 16:01

I think we should invite him and shout him the fuck down. The 'passivity because he's dangerous' argument isnt British. We go to war without decent boots if we think we are being fucked with and Trump needs to know this. The US is onlt powerful by agreement. its military strategies are aggressive but badly executed and naive, its country has too many people on theor knees because the nation loves walmart and macdinalds and dairy queen and starbucks and amazon and any number of minimum wage nasty to your employees employers and a culture of stupidity and anti intellectualism,, whilst china india africa and europe are accelerating education, looking after their workforce and promoting intellectual creative and scientific skill irrespective of whether it is currently associated eith momey or not. We would be better aligning eith Europe, China, islamic nations, !and Australiasia and perhaps partially being a translator/ go between between these empires and the US empire. To be a 51st state when America is on its knees would be very naive.

We cannot politely align with fascism, but sometimes callimg the bully over so ypu csn fave him diwn on your turf is an excellent idea.

mycatwantstokillme1 · 31/01/2017 16:04

Could the title of your post be any more goady, OP?!

Katy07 · 31/01/2017 16:05

Also he's tweeted some awful things about Kate Middleton.
Now I'm starting to like the guy! If he promises to quiz her about her lack of work ethic I think we should definitely get him over...

MrsJorahMormont · 31/01/2017 16:05

Yet another reason to hate Brexit - the fact that we are left like a helpless blob of slime in the middle of the sea floating towards Trump.

PebbleInTheMoonlight · 31/01/2017 16:05

To be honest roseshippy I'm wondering what planet people like you live on that you don't realise the petition is to stop a state visit.

Aside from the orange one being an awful choice as a country leader, offering a state visit to a brand new leader is short-sighted at best.

If his deeds prove worthy of a state visit then by all means invite him, but currently he's only worthy of visiting the UK as a normal dignitary (and treated with the same contempt by protesters as other unpopular leaders).

NarkyMcDinkyChops · 31/01/2017 16:06

So it's OK for Putin to come and meet our queen, but not Trump?

A lot has changed in 14 years. And yet again, other dodgy things happening previously doesn't mean we aren't allowed to be pissed off about dodgy things happening now.

Not to mention the fact that some of us protested Putin's state visit in 2003 anyway!

TheNaze73 · 31/01/2017 16:07

Personally, I think demo's are worth the square root of fuck all. I marched against an illegal war once, orchestrated by an odious British man, who many names have been levelled at quite rightly, yet nothing happened & ever will.

Rainydayspending · 31/01/2017 16:08

It appears he craves adulation, so this sort of "do one, we don't like you" is probably quite effective. Also although not convicted he appears to have (as in bragged about) committed sexual assault. Don't we give sex offenders a hard time getting into the UK?

Bluntness100 · 31/01/2017 16:08

I totally agree with you op. The relationship with America is much much wider than this one issue. From security, joint defence onwards. To ban trump from the uk would be very short sighted. Yes we may not agree with all his policies, but there is wider issues at play here.

Sure, I agree some of his policies are horrendous, but that does not change our need for a relationship with the states.

Rainydayspending · 31/01/2017 16:09

(Effective to piss him off if the info gets past his puppeters of course)

whatsthepointofmorgan · 31/01/2017 16:09

Where are the protesters when we're costing up to Saudi Arabia?!

Oh No!
Don't say that!
You'll bring out 'THE WORD' Wink

whatsthepointofmorgan · 31/01/2017 16:11

So it's OK for Putin to come and meet our queen, but not Trump?
Who's trump murdered lately?

Classic.
I can't hear for the silence.

gingercoffee · 31/01/2017 16:11

Of course I'd rather he didn't visit the UK at all, and I'd like him to feel the disapproval and disgust that we all feel for him, (not that he'd give a monkey's). But as POTUS he will come sometime. He shouldn't be given a state visit though, that should be reserved for people who are not so evil and who don't have so little disregard for people's lives. So I am completely behind the people signing the petition, and am indeed one of them.

MakingMerry · 31/01/2017 16:11

Bluntness100 where people are saying ban him from the UK?

JamieXeed74 · 31/01/2017 16:13

If its ok for the President Xi Jinping to have a State visit and meet the Queen its ok for Trump!

Sorry what was that about putting human rights before money?

NarkyMcDinkyChops · 31/01/2017 16:13

I can't hear for the silence

The silence where someone already answered that exact question? Hmm

whatsthepointofmorgan · 31/01/2017 16:13

Not to mention the fact that some of us protested Putin's state visit in 2003 anyway!

Not on the same scale.
Why is that?

space83 · 31/01/2017 16:13

It's the State visit element, not an outright ban on him per se.

Yeah, we're leaving the EU but that doesn't necessarily mean that trade with EU countries won't evolve. The import/export is in our favour at the moment and in terms of currency Sterling is still above the Euro and the Dollar so although exchange rates aren't fab we'll still be above the 1:1.

I do think we need to make a stand in terms of sidling up to a guy who is a massive misogynistic prejudiced guy whose dad was arrested at a KKK rally in 1927 (although DTrump insisted it never happened never ever happened completely untrue) and whose whole campaign and current running of the country has been one of fear mongering and division.

It's just not cricket from the Leader of Free World - that fact we're saying XY and Z dictators have been hosted doesn't mean that is right and definitely not for a nation that prides itself on liberty We really shouldn't be lumping them in even anywhere near the same catagories. Strange days eh?

NarkyMcDinkyChops · 31/01/2017 16:13

If its ok for the President Xi Jinping to have a State visit and meet the Queen its ok for Trump!

That wasn't ok either.

We are infested with whataboutery today!

Atenco · 31/01/2017 16:14

Who knows how long Trump will be in power, a trade deal could be forever

Or it could be like NAFTA, violated and cancelled out of hand.

I live in Mexico, where a succession of corrupt presidents have stripped the country of its sovereignty and made it heavily reliant on the existence of NAFTA. Trump has already intimidated car manufacturers into leaving Mexico, with threats of import duties in direct violation of NAFTA.

Do you really want this to happen to the UK?

whatsthepointofmorgan · 31/01/2017 16:14

Oh Hello! Smile
