to wonder what planet the 'ban Trump from the UK' people are living on

Yes I understand that he's a sexist, racist, whatever-else-ist.

But he evidently thinks fondly of the UK, we are currently in the process of saying 'fuck off' to mainland Europe, so we will be a small, friendless island in the North Sea in need of some help.

AIBU to think that we need to suffer a bit of schmoozing from dodgy foreign leaders as part of post-Brexit Britain? (Actually didn't we already schmooze dodgy foreign leaders long before Brexit?)

And in reality Trump is rather less dodgy than the average world leader, if we exclude the EU, as we have done

What are the other choices?

Flymetothmmoonliterally, agree with everything you said

TheElementsSong · 03/02/2017 17:03

Because they were unlucky enough to be born in the wrong country???

That is about the size of it, for Trump appeasers and apologists. Although sometimes dressed up with more words, to try to convince the gullible that this isn't repellent.

Lweji · 03/02/2017 18:27

It's very easy for people whose lives weren't in danger or totally fucked up to claim hysteria.

First they came for... not me. And then someone else. Then another someone else.
Then they came for me and there was nobody left to defend me.
Always remember this.

Lweji · 03/02/2017 18:38

Also, many people weren't just inconvenienced. They were returned home or actually prevented from getting home.

The ones that did go through had special waivers obtained through people who actually give a damn or solicitors who went to help them.

Megatherium · 03/02/2017 18:40

It's fascinating how Trump fans always seek to minimise what he is doing. The travel ban? Just a minor inconvenience for a few people - let's ignore the kid who's been denied vitally needed heart surgery as a result, and the people whose jobs have been put in jeopardy.. Lies? No, just his ever so hilarious jokes.

The fact that they feel the need to deny undeniable facts simply demonstrates that in their heart of hearts they know that what is happening is unacceptable but they can't bear to acknowledge it, because otherwise the whole edifice of their political beliefs comes crashing down.

TheElementsSong · 03/02/2017 18:41

I'm sure this will be dismissed as just hysteria or fake news, whereas the "109 people mildly inconvenienced" thing was oh-so-accurate.

NarkyMcDinkyChops · 03/02/2017 18:46

If I was to March it would be over more important things than Trump

But you don't march or protest about any of those things that you think are more important, do you? No, you slag off other people for doing something you think isn't worth it, but you do even less.

How about you get off your arse, your keyboard and do something, anything. If not, you have no room to criticise anyone else.

SleepOhHowIMissYou · 03/02/2017 19:16

I am neither a supporter of, or apologist for Trump. I'm merely stating it as I see it. Having said that, personally I wouldn't protest against any democratically elected individual, regardless of who they are.

Beyond his regeneration of New York, I know very little about Donald Trump. I heard he was loaned a million dollars by his father, and if he turned a million into a billion then that's some going regardless of who you are.

All the subjects you raise are awful, but if you consider America as being run as a profit-making business, then your expectations can be adjusted. Trump is not out to do anyone any favours, and the UK is included in that.

I would err on the side of caution and see how this experiment (because that's what this presidency is) works out before I chuck all my teddies.

Lweji · 03/02/2017 19:24

This is one of the slightly inconvenienced people.

Trump travel ban leaves Iranian baby's heart surgery in limbo

I'm merely stating it as I see it.

Always that excuse.

If you don't know much about him and, particularly, his policies, why don't you research them before you criticise others for protesting against him?

Lweji · 03/02/2017 19:26

I would err on the side of caution and see how this experiment (because that's what this presidency is) works out before I chuck all my teddies.

Yes, that worked out really well for many Dictators, particularly those with penchants for genocide.

He has been given a chance and in two weeks he's clearly showing his true colours.

Look it up.

SleepOhHowIMissYou · 03/02/2017 19:29

Because I don't have to Lweji. We live in a democracy, therefore I am free to give my opinion, no matter how ill informed you may consider it, just like you are free to have your own differing opinion.

TheElementsSong · 03/02/2017 19:32

I would err on the side of caution and see how this experiment (because that's what this presidency is) works out before I chuck all my teddies.

A tip for you - this is MN, nest of vipers. The "if you haven't protested against literally every bad thing in all of human history, then you can't protest against Trump" approach is likely to gain more traction than the "nice girls lie back completely passively just waiting for dust notes to settle, hardly daring to breathe for fear of offending someone (particularly male" line.

FlyMeToTheMoonLiterally · 03/02/2017 19:34

I love the argument 'I am sick of being called ignorant, I deserve to be heard' but I'll readily admit I've done no research

The uprising of the ignorant, that's what this all comes down to.

SleepOhHowIMissYou · 03/02/2017 19:34

Again I am ignorant Lweji, apart from Hitler, what other dictators were democratically elected? Genocide appears to be the nasty habit of Autocracies as a rule.

An autocracy is where only one opinion is permitted. Luckilly we don't live like that here.

SleepOhHowIMissYou · 03/02/2017 19:41

Ignorance is not a accusation I face in real life FlyMe, quite the opposite.

People tend to think others are ignorant when someone is clearly too stupid to see what they are saying is so obviously right. It says more about the accusers intellect than the person they accuse.

Lweji · 03/02/2017 19:41

The uprising of the ignorant, that's what this all comes down to.

Yes. :(

"Democratically" elected dictators (quick google):

53rdAndBird · 03/02/2017 19:41

apart from Hitler, what other dictators were democratically elected?

Hitler isn't the best example - he wasn't really elected as leader - but yes, others were. Mugabe, Marcos, Putin, Lukashenko?

DJBaggySmalls · 03/02/2017 19:44

Dont forget Mussolini;

Lweji · 03/02/2017 19:45

www.young-diplomats.com/top-10-of-best-elected-dictators/

  1. Idriss Deby (Chad)
  1. Assad (Syria)
  2. Islom Karimov (Uzbekistan)
  3. Pierre N’Kurunziza (Burundi)
  4. Paul Kagame (Rwanda)
  5. Omar al-Bashir (Sudan)
  6. Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo (Equatorial Guinea)
  7. Abdel Fattah al-Sisi (Egypt)
  8. Gurbuganly Berdimuhamedow (Turkmenistan)
  9. Nursultan Nazarbayev (Kazakhstan)

Also Angola.

Note that Trump was only "democratically" elected, as he didn't have a majority of people in the US voting for him. Less almost 3 million voters than the other candidate.

SleepOhHowIMissYou · 03/02/2017 19:48

I take Obama's stance Elements, if Donald Trump starts rounding up children of immigrants born in the US and deporting them, then I'll fish out my placard and magic markers and join you.

However, so far he's done exactly what he said he'd do (put America's needs above the needs of anyone else) which was the pledge that got him democratically elected in the first place.

SleepOhHowIMissYou · 03/02/2017 19:52

Thank you 53rd, Lweji and DJ, I am now much more cleverer.

Lweji · 03/02/2017 19:57

I take Obama's stance

What is Obama's stance? Let's see:

Barack Obama breaks silence on Trump presidency to condemn migration ban

"Exercising right to assemble and be heard is ‘exactly what we expect to see when American values are at stake’, former president says through spokesman"

“The president [Obama] fundamentally disagrees with the notion of discriminating against individuals because of their faith or religion,” a spokesman for Obama said.
“There’s a difference between [the] normal functioning of politics and certain issues or certain moments where I think our core values may be at stake,” Obama said then. “I put in that category if I saw systematic discrimination being ratified in some fashion. [check] I put in that category explicit or functional obstacles to people being able to vote, to exercise their franchise.

“I put in that category institutional efforts to silence dissent or the press." [check]

Lweji · 03/02/2017 19:59

Also:

spokesman Kevin Lewis said Obama was “heartened” by the amount of engagement being seen across the country – presumably a reference to the protests that sprang up over the weekend against Trump’s executive order. “In his final official speech as president, he spoke about the important role of citizens and how all Americans have a responsibility to be the guardians of our democracy – not just during an election, but every day,” Lewis said.

“Citizens exercising their constitutional right to assemble, organize and have their voices heard by their elected officials is exactly what we expect to see when American values are at stake,” he said.

-----------------

You protest about what you want.

But don't use Obama to justify not doing and least of all to criticise those who do.

TheElementsSong · 03/02/2017 20:00

Good grief Lweji did you actually check for some facts? How... hysterical... of you!

SleepOhHowIMissYou · 03/02/2017 20:04

Yes Elements, Lweji did my research for me.

That kind of makes me her boss!

Go me!
