Theresa May - opinions

So over the weekend so so many decent people spoke out about Trump and the Travel Ban from countries with largely Muslim populations (though not those where he has business deals or hotels)..... I'm furious with the actions of the UK PM who instead of standing firm for values and morals seems to be cosying up to this monster and trying to get trade deals going..... is it me or does anyone else think if the UK had remained in the EU - we'd now have David Cameron joining the voices of the sane to condemn Trump. Is this what the UK has now become...... I've seen tweets of all the anti Trump visit marches and am so proud of those people getting out to have their voices heard...... and the online petition..... again British people standing up like they have done so many times before. Does anyone else think also that Theresa May is leading this country down the wrong path and that in this instance regardless of what you think about Brexit it would be better for us to be in the EU? Didn't Cameron warn of this also?

What do we export as a country? We have little to offer the US.
Machinery, art and cars

What's not really the backbone of our export economy though is it?

Most of our economic output comes from the financial services industry. Services.

Which in turn is reliant on our position in Europe. Oh wait...?

The only way banks will be encouraged to stay is by making the UK a tax haven, to paraphrase Theresa May.

A tax haven means low taxes. Which means no NHS, minimal public services etc.

Unless the government plans to shift the economy to one where we are more reliant on manufacturing..... which I've seen no sign of.

We export billions of ££ worth of the above. The art business is very lucrative.

Believeitornot · 31/01/2017 17:50

Compared to everything else in our economy it's a drop in the ocean I'm afraid.

I don't think art exports are going to save our economy.

Given we already export art, why would a trade relationship make it any better?

I think she's completely stuck. We need to keep the US on side for the brexit negotiations.

Report
larrygrylls · 31/01/2017 17:52

You could see in her face how uncomfortable she was with Trump.

Get real, though. The US will not listen to European condemnation. They have less need for Europe than Europe have of them and feel they have bailed us out twice in the last century or so and continue to shield us from threat.

Egomaniacs like Trump need buttering up in public and negotiating hard with in private. TM has already made him do a U turn on NATO. If she goes in all guns blazing she will only harden him in his views. Patient polite negotiation is far more likely to get a positive result.

We don't need to keep the US onside in such a pathetic way.

Also can someone explain how art exports will create jobs please?

I'm afraid The height of condescension.

Report
Believeitornot · 31/01/2017 18:13

How is that condescending?

Report
Believeitornot · 31/01/2017 18:14

And you haven't pointed out how art exports will help exactly with improving our current trade position.
Sweeping statements which are not underpinned by facts is more condescending. You assume I'm stupid enough to fall for it.

The reality is that the US has a huge manufacturing economy which we don't. It doesn't need manufactured goods from us, especially when Trump has a US first policy at the centre of his governance. I have no doubt that TM will get her trade deal, but it will be one that benefits the US far more than us. I hope there will be due scrutiny of any proposed deal in Parliament.

One thing I really can't understand is that before the referendum, the proposed signing of the TTIP by the EU was flagged up by many as a reason to vote Leave. Any deal that we can make with the US is going to be even worse as we don't have the negotiating capacity of the EU. Why are the people who were up in arms at the prospect of selling off public services to US firms and flooding the market with GM foods so in favour of a US deal now?

Yes, she seems very weak and I imagine her being overly apologetic and sickeningly nice when with Trump.

Watching them together on tv, she seemed so nervous and uncomfortable. I'm afraid, if your PM, get your shit together, woman. Cmon.

Everybody calm down Brexit will work out fine, we'll simply replace the tax revenue from our financiall services sector with the exportation to the US of multiple copies of Damian Hirst's pickled cows and unrealeased Girls Aloud remixes. Art will save us! BeLeave!

I'm not sure.

Ken Clarke took aim at his own party and hit the target today though. I'm not normally a fan but that was a lesson in how to make a speech.

She's stuck between the devil and the deep blue sea, almost literally.

We've backed ourselves into a corner with Brexit and our only hope is trade deals with the likes of Trump.

Having read a history text book today though about the rise of Hitler and Nazism, it made for a real cold sweat moment.

Worrying times.

She's stuck between the devil and the deep blue sea, almost literally.

No - if she had any real leadership ability she would have found a way to negotiate. E.g. as soon as she took office, she could have said that the people have expressed a slight preference to Leave and that she would publish a White paper on the issue. Had she done that, we might be in the same place as now, but with proper arguments put and proper costings. Then, with the options on the table and debated in Parliament said that it would be put to a further Referendum or GE. Plus keeping on decent terms with the other EU countries. Instead she appeased her right wing totally and then tried to bypass Parliament. So if she is now stuck between the devil and the deep blue sea it is entirely her fault.

If she's stuck it's entirely her own fault. I sat opened mouthed during her performance at the Tory conference. She pretty much made out that anybody who didn't support Brexit was an enemy of the 'people' winking and posturing like a schoolyard meangirl. She is in over her head and isn't as clever as she thinks she is. Unfortunately the U.K will end up paying the price for her ambition.

She's out of her depth. I have no confidence in her. Her overriding tactic is stubborness without any substance to back it up. I desperately hoped she'd prove my initial pessimistic view of her wrong, but she's even worse than I anticipated. Don't even get me started on Corbyn.

Everything seems extremely bleak at the moment.

Can I add, for balance, Kate Hoey is a disgrace. She got Ian D Smith to agree with her.

Strange times indeed.

What has Kate Hoey said? Have I missed something?

Report
PenguinRoar · 31/01/2017 19:29

She's utterly lacking in morals and compassion. At the moment she is behaving in a weak and embarrassing manner which appears grovelling at best.

I loathed her role in Cameron's cabinet too - she showed the same traits then.

Didn't Obama ban Iraqi refugees for 6 months when he was in power? Where was all the breast beating then? Several Muslim countries don't allow Israeli citizens into their countries (16 I think). Any mass protests on that? No, I thought not.

We cannot just flounce off and Not Talk To the Americans because we don't like their president. We have to work together with all of these people. The Russians, the Chinese The Saudis, the Bangladeshis, The Indians.... We need a measured professional approach. I think she is handling it well. It is a very difficult situation.
