Theresa May - opinions

So over the weekend so so many decent people spoke out about Trump and the Travel Ban from countries with largely Muslim populations (though not those where he has business deals or hotels)..... I'm furious with the actions of the UK PM who instead of standing firm for values and morals seems to be cosying up to this monster and trying to get trade deals going..... is it me or does anyone else think if the UK had remained in the EU - we'd now have David Cameron joining the voices of the sane to condemn Trump. Is this what the UK has now become...... I've seen tweets of all the anti Trump visit marches and am so proud of those people getting out to have their voices heard...... and the online petition..... again British people standing up like they have done so many times before. Does anyone else think also that Theresa May is leading this country down the wrong path and that in this instance regardless of what you think about Brexit it would be better for us to be in the EU? Didn't Cameron warn of this also?

The old terminology would be that she's 'between a rock and a hard place'.
WTF can she do?

Valentine2 · 30/01/2017 22:11

Believe
I have just paid nearly 25% extra on my bread today in the supermarket (British). The fare of the bus services round my area just got increased by 6% for exactly the same service. Price of a basic flour bag that I used to buy in bulk (hence remember it's price very well) was increased 8%!
These are what I have noted.

Valentine2 · 30/01/2017 22:12

Bread was Hovis wholemeal in Sainsbury's.

OohhItsNotHoxton · 30/01/2017 22:17

I am totally against Trump making a state visit. I am somewhat disappointed by May's actions. But in all fairness I never considered May as a natural leader. I would certainly never have voted for her.
I slightly sort of get her attempting to maintain a cordial relationship with POTUS. But not to the extent of a State visit. It makes me think either she knows something we don't or is a very sade excuse of a PM.

Capricorn76 · 30/01/2017 22:17

The woman will do or say anything to stay in power.

PantyLiner · 30/01/2017 22:24

I like Theresa May, I think she secretly despises trump and his ways but let's face it, we do need that trade deal with America, she's doing what she needs to do for the future of our country & got a minefield of a job to get through. She can't win either way

This

We are longer welcome within Europe. Its not a great idea to make an enemy of America as well. What exactly should Teresa May do in the best interest of the country she finds herself in charge of - whether she was elected on not.

Thank God for TM - she is doing her best for us. I can't imagine where we would be now if Corbyn was the decision maker.....

PantyLiner · 30/01/2017 22:25
  • no longer welcome....
Neolara · 30/01/2017 22:38

I not particularly keen on TM, but the reality is she is damned whatever she does. The options are suck up to The Orange Arse in the hope of getting a trade deal the UK is going to be desperate for once we lose access to the single market, or tell him he's a prick and face the consequences in any future negotiations about trade.

I have no doubt that if we weren't facing Bexit, she would be doing an Angela and letting him know exact what she thought.

But there we go. Brexit is effectively forcing our government to align the UK with a country led by a morally bankrupt narcissistic instead of aligning with Europe. Yes, it's shit.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 30/01/2017 22:39

Yes I think believe she should be speaking out against Trump more

But we are leaving the EU and we need America like it or not senior politicians have to deal with leaders that turn a blind eye to the suffering of their people all the time and support this. Trump will cut ties if he feels affornted it's a difficult position to be in

I thought during the joint press conference with Trump apart from the fawning she came across as far more professional and far more intelligent he looked as though he was out of his depth and against a women

and really who else is there Boris well I would prefer Theresa May to Boris and Corbyn well there is no chance of that ever happening he certainly would be out of his depth. Now is the time Labour could gain some ground with support just they need a new leader

GraceGrape · 30/01/2017 22:47

We are no longer welcome in Europe

Only because of the pig-headed stance the government has taken on Brexit. Everyone is making out that TM has no choice here. That's rubbish. She has deliberately led us along this path. She could negotiate a perfectly affable, sound economic relationship with Europe even while leaving the structure of the EU, if she would stop banging her "immigration is the root of all evil" drum (a la Trump).

BarbarianMum · 30/01/2017 22:47

Capricorn really? I can't see many people fighting her for it right now. BoJo maybe, I bet he and Trump would be besties.

icy121 · 30/01/2017 22:53

If your going to accuse her of sucking up to despots why are you not mentioning the man who is actually beating, killing, disapearing people - ie Erdogan???

Because denouncing Erdogan doesn't signal as much virtue as denouncing Trump I guess

foxyloxy78 · 30/01/2017 22:54

Useless

Valentine2 · 30/01/2017 23:06

Thank God for TM - she is doing her best for us. I can't imagine where we would be now if Corbyn was the decision maker.....

really? I must say I would trust Corbyn to take far better care of our NHS any day than May ever would.
In fact, I am dreading that Trump is going to attack NHS first.
I am sure if it came to that, Corbyn will be the one saving the day, NONE of the Tories, least of all May. Hmm

Valentine2 · 30/01/2017 23:08

This whole "Brexit is the will of people" on Tories' part could be a disguised attack on whatever we have left of the welfare state. Sad I don't think anyone is that helpless or that stupid.

yeOldeTrout · 31/01/2017 07:24

The BBC World Service programme The Inquiry had a really good broadcast yesterday about Brexit. If people thought trading under EU rules was bureaucratic hassle, they ain't seen nothing yet b/c WTO negotiations and conditions are going to be hellish.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 31/01/2017 08:53

Corbyn saving the day

How exactly ?

He comes unstuck during PM's question time sends condolences to a family when no one has died this was on one day! his MP's are confused as to what he shall be doing and he is continuously losing public support I very much doubt even now this will dent May's popularity because her opposition is so pathetically poor

Labour could really gain ground now and they absolutely should be but they won't with Corbyn leading the party (and they haven't even with all the unpopular cutbacks) he is an embarrassment to the party and shows himself to be so totally out of his depth

The best thing Corbyn can do for the Labour Party and the country is to step down and allow someone who is up to the job of leading the opposition and can really challenge the government and will have a good chance to become PM

Elendon · 31/01/2017 09:51

May is like Billy no mates running around with the school yard bully. The only thing Billy no mates has is his attractive sister and he's hoping to pimp her out to the bully.

The Tories have literally sold the granny to get their way. It's embarrassing and demeaning.

I'm wondering how low they will go. The NHS is next. Trust me, getting good quality health care post cancer diagnosis on PHI isn't fun.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 31/01/2017 10:01

Absolutely the NHS will be destroyed

But with no real opposition that is exactly what they shall do

Elendon · 31/01/2017 10:04

The opposition does what it does, oppose, but if those power don't listen then there won't be a defeat. The people who need to oppose are those in power. There needs to be a rebel faction in the Conservative Party who will stand up to maintaining Great British values.

Katy07 · 31/01/2017 10:08

"I like Theresa May, I think she secretly despises trump and his ways but let's face it, we do need that trade deal with America, she's doing what she needs to do for the future of our country & got a minefield of a job to get through. She can't win either way

^ All of this. It scares me that people actually think Corbyn is capable of running the country. I doubt he could run a lawnmower - "I'm going to cut it short, no I'm leaving it long, short, long, stripes, no stripes, short, long..."

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 31/01/2017 10:13

The opposition needs to provide a united opposition and the leader needs to lead the party and gain public support he is proved himself to be useless at both there simply isn't an opposition at the moment a good leader would have reached out to those in the Tory party that are deeply unhappy with his May is going ahead with her Brexit plans but no she has got her party in order while Corbyn has done what excatly

But if people want to keep blindly supporting him well that is only good news for the Tories and UKIP it's certainly not for those who would like Labour to have a chance of winning the next election and for those who want an opposition leader who can demonstrate an understanding of the complexities of dealing with high level negotiations that will come along with Brexit

TheNaze73 · 31/01/2017 10:17

Doing a fab job & has double the approval ratings of Corbyn

Madbengalmum · 31/01/2017 10:18

Teresa May is in a very difficult position. Trump has carried out the promise he made to the people who voted for him. We (the uk), still have a trade deal to do with the USA. We should get on with doing that business.
Based on the fact that other countries we deal with have hateful dictators running them, if we condemned and refused to deal with them all, we would certainly have poor relationships with quite alot of countries.

Elendon · 31/01/2017 10:32

I'm a Labour supporter and don't support Corbyn. But then I'm honest and go by my conscience. I don't blindly follow.

Trump is not a politician. He is a business man. His route to being POTUS has been on the assumption of being anti political.

May's position is not difficult. She is this country's Prime Minister. Highest political authority in the land. She is like Corbyn in a way in that she wasn't elected as Prime Minister at the polling booth.

I think her only escape from this nightmare is to call an early election.
