Theresa May - opinions

So over the weekend so so many decent people spoke out about Trump and the Travel Ban from countries with largely Muslim populations (though not those where he has business deals or hotels)..... I'm furious with the actions of the UK PM who instead of standing firm for values and morals seems to be cosying up to this monster and trying to get trade deals going..... is it me or does anyone else think if the UK had remained in the EU - we'd now have David Cameron joining the voices of the sane to condemn Trump. Is this what the UK has now become...... I've seen tweets of all the anti Trump visit marches and am so proud of those people getting out to have their voices heard...... and the online petition..... again British people standing up like they have done so many times before. Does anyone else think also that Theresa May is leading this country down the wrong path and that in this instance regardless of what you think about Brexit it would be better for us to be in the EU? Didn't Cameron warn of this also?

I am ashamed that she is our Prime Minister. She walks hand in hand with a fascist leader and refuses to condemn him. She has scrapped her morals and abandoned british values.

Knittedfrog · 30/01/2017 20:47

Loose canon Sad

TheProblemOfSusan · 30/01/2017 20:49

DebbieDownersGiveItARest because we weren't talking about Erdogan? We were talking about May and the travel ban. He's a shit too, obviously. And she's doing despicable deals with him, too.

And I don't for one second think Trump actually meant that about NATO. He's post-truth. Literally the basis of his entire campaign. So yes, if he actually meant it, great coup for May. But he doesn't, because he's in Putin's pocket. He's not going to do anything yet, but there will be wheedling and dissembling and he'll erode NATO's power.

Hence my reference to the very effective Munich Agreement.

SaucyDough · 30/01/2017 20:51

He called the referendum to appease his own party and then ducked out when it was obvious the going after the result would be rough.

He only wanted the referendum so that the Conservatives would win the general election.

LoupGarou · 30/01/2017 20:51

And I don't for one second think Trump actually meant that about NATO.

This ^^ .

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 30/01/2017 20:53

I like her. I think she's doing the best she can in difficult circumstances.

Dawndonnaagain · 30/01/2017 20:54

She's an embarrassment and as for the Nato supposed support, we're talking Trump, a narcissistic dictator who can and probably will change his mine within a week and claim that it was a #alternativefact.

MadameRaleuse · 30/01/2017 20:55

May had a great opportunity when she took power to say right, the people have spoken but they were fed a whole load of lies.

Many of us thought she was playing some kind of long game - but instead she has gone for harder and harder Brexit, all the time pissing off the other Europeans who only want to be UK allies.

She is now isolated, and has to suck up to Trump. But she is selling her soul (NHS among others) to the devil.

We are heading for a shitstorm. I think it will be people like Merkel we need to turn to for moral leadership.

TheFairyCaravan · 30/01/2017 20:55

Rufus apparently it's stairs and slopes, poor lamb! Sad

MadameRaleuse · 30/01/2017 20:55

I really want to like her. I wish I could like her. But pretty much ever decision she has taken has been shite.

Lessthanaballpark · 30/01/2017 20:57

"She walks hand in hand with a fascist leader and refuses to condemn him. "

In her defence he did grab her. And Brexit hasn't left her with many options.

DJBaggySmalls · 30/01/2017 20:58

May is going to sell us out to Trump, she wants a US style health service.

I'm beyond disgusted.

WrongTrouser · 30/01/2017 21:01

I think the subtext in your post is a major driving factor in Trump's rise to power

bythewatersedge Could you say more on this?

DJBaggySmalls · 30/01/2017 21:07

I think the subtext in your post is a major driving factor in Trump's rise to power.

Blaming the movement or the Left for the backlash is blaming the wrong people for embracing the far right or Fascism.

RufusTheSpartacusReindeer · 30/01/2017 21:08

Oh lord fairy

Poor sod...not got a lot going for him has he Sad

SapphireBird · 30/01/2017 21:10

look, I don't really disagree with the tine of the thread.... but...

Who would replace her? Gove? Johnson?

The Labour Party are in disarray...

It's all a worrying mess.

SapphireBird · 30/01/2017 21:10

Tone of the thread...

PickAChew · 30/01/2017 21:15

Is this why he's rather fond of gold plated lifts?

TheProblemOfSusan · 30/01/2017 21:17

sapphirebird oh, totally, no idea what labour think they're playing at - it's almost enough to drive me back into the arms of the bloody lib dems. There's no sensible alternative but that doesn't stop the tories being total bastards as usual.

I swore after the tuition fees and coalition debacle that it would be a cold day in hell before I'd vote for a lib dem again but it seems like it might be time to get the skis out of the loft.

Topseyt · 30/01/2017 21:18

I am losing any respect I had for her (not masses in the first place, but I supposed she was the marginally better of a terrible bunch).

True that she has been dealt a difficult impossible hand by the ridiculous Brexit vote, but her cosying up to Trump (described in the FT today as a pro-Russian protectionist) for trade deals is almost vomit inducing.

Also, it is hard to believe that barely a year ago, when she was Home Secretary, we considered banning Trump from the UK but didn't do it. Now she is PM and he is POTUS and she was virtually falling over herself to invite him for an ill-advised State Visit.

BarbarianMum · 30/01/2017 21:21

Honestly, I think we have put ourselves in such a weak, friendless position regarding brexit that I can see that she doesn't feel that we can afford to piss off the USA atm too. And, also to be fair, she's promised him a state visit, not agreed to go to war with him yet.

I don't agree with the government's stance on Trump but I admire TM for agreeing to walk in and try to pick through the toxic mess Davey boy left us.

Somerville · 30/01/2017 21:24

I initially thought she was the best option of the Tories who put themselves forward. And like a PP said, I suspected she was playing a long game wrt Brexit, because as former Home Secretary she understood the problem of the north of Ireland.

But now I think I was wrong. She's heading towards hard Brexit and she's prepared to do anything - even hold hands with Trump - to make it succeed.

She did do well to get Trump inside about NATO but he changes his mind all the time and doubtless will about this as well.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 30/01/2017 21:26

I don't like her on a personal level, but. What choice does she have other that to jump on Trump's dick. I bet if you got her pissed. She'd admit that. She can't fucking stand him, but. What can she do. Its best to have him as a friend than an enemy. After all we're leaving the EU. She needs to get/keep us as many friends as she can

GraceGrape · 30/01/2017 21:30

This is such a ridiculous situation. If we're so desperate for a trade deal that we have to cosy up to the likes of Trump (who's not going to give us much of a deal anyway), why not just dial back on the crazy chaotic Brexit, start being more conciliatory to our European allies and negotiate a soft Brexit which allows us to trade within the single market? Talk about cutting off your nose to spite your face.

TheProblemOfSusan · 30/01/2017 21:33

There's one way to get out of this, and that's too just back down in brexit. There isn't a mandate for it. The referendum was massively flawed. There are ways to dial it back and save face but they're just too bloody stubborn.

A second referendum with proper rules would do it. We need to be united in Europe now more than ever.
