£1000 disappeared into thin air!

WIBU to think this is not even possible??!!

I tried to withdraw £1000 from cashpoint inside a Lloyds bank yesterday.

The money didn't come out and the cashier convinced me it hadn't come off the balance, so I assumed I didn't have enough money and had miscalculated some dates of payments etc.

Just logged on to internet banking to find the £1000 has been taken off my balance!!!

WWYD? I'm on the phone to the bank now, in the queue, passed from one person to another....!!!

I'm so distressed as I really need to make a payment today with the money (for rent)!

Never could I have imagined that this can actually happen! It's only 2 months since another card of mine was fraudulently copied. My trust in banks has completely gone. Mind you I did get my money back last time, but this time it's just.... such a stressful timing... sorry for going hysterical.

Anyone else had this happen to them?

totally agree with willows comments. ridiculous projecting and taking 2 + 2 and getting 347.

Lloyds machines give max £500 to their account holders so it's unlikely that someone with an offshore account will be able to take £1k out

Im a Llyods offshore account holder.

MrsPeelyWally · 23/01/2017 13:10

* Lloyds machines give max £500 to their account holders so it's unlikely that someone with an offshore account will be able to take £1k out

Im a Lloyds offshore account holder and people only being able to withdraw 500 on the mainland is nothing to do with what can be taken out if your account is offshore.

And off the top of my head I seem to recall 2 other offshore banks where we would be taking about similar amounts.

Klaphat · 23/01/2017 13:28

reasons may or may not involve running a biz account and perhaps even an offshore one. was absolutely easy to interpret as implying something dodgy.

Klaphat · 23/01/2017 13:31

Also I missed out the word 'post' in my previous post, for all the comedians/idiots (can't tell if they're all serious) seemingly reading it as me being amazed by the existence of business or offshore accounts.

Klaphat · 23/01/2017 13:36

And I have multiple accounts outside of the UK - but I would never refer to them as 'offshore accounts', because I understand that phrase. Hmm

That's not the case because you missed out the rest of the sentence which made it very clear why the OP was being ambiguous.

I'm not sure why you needed to clarify what offshore banking is when anyone who has an offshore account is aware of what it is

Perhaps the OP is like myself and plenty other people here who are not resident in the Uk but still own or rent property there, spend quite a bit of time there every year yet still qualify for an offshore account.

Thank you anyway for the link re offshore banking - even though I'm not sure what your point was.

purplefizz26 · 23/01/2017 14:11

This has nothing to do with fraud.

Maybe the machine was faulty, didn't have enough cash to dispense what you requested, any number of things could have gone wrong.

Just phone the bank and tell them, it's probably down as a pending transaction and will pop back into your available balance after a certain amount of time has passed when the account realises the cash wasn't actually taken.

Klaphat · 23/01/2017 14:23

In the context of the 'may or may not' wording, it was easy to read her as not wanting to be 'outed' specifically due to any questionable tax arrangements etc.

I'm not sure what you mean by 'yet still qualify for an offshore account' in this case.

The link makes it clear that 'offshore account' is not used simply to mean 'non-UK account'. The vast majority of non-UK accounts would not be termed 'offshore' accounts. Offshore accounts are used for specific purposes, one of the most common of which is tax advantages. It was a response to the OP when she said:

FYI this is 2017, lots of people have offshore accounts (ie non-UK accounts)

chocolateavocado99 · 23/01/2017 14:42

I know this thread has gone way off topic, but I had a similar experience with an atm giving a withdrawl slip for $400 when nothing came out. I was overseas at the time and my local bank blamed it on the atm bank and the atm bank said they were not responsible. It took about 3 weeks but eventually the money was deposited into my account.

GoesDownLikeACupOfColdSick · 23/01/2017 15:15

There are some ATMs inside the branches that allow a higher withdrawal. Hope you're ok, Op.

I was well aware the account was not with Lloyds and I was replying to the post you made where you mentioned Lloyds.

Your link means nothing. Barclays isn't the bank in question. Lloyds machines give max £500 to their account holders so it's unlikely that someone with an offshore account will be able to take £1k out

Klaphat, I think if you are that way inclined it would be very easy to think the worse of someone just for the entertainment value of it.

As for anything else - I'll leave you to knock yourself out.

Good night
