£1000 disappeared into thin air!

WIBU to think this is not even possible??!!

I tried to withdraw £1000 from cashpoint inside a Lloyds bank yesterday.

The money didn't come out and the cashier convinced me it hadn't come off the balance, so I assumed I didn't have enough money and had miscalculated some dates of payments etc.

Just logged on to internet banking to find the £1000 has been taken off my balance!!!

WWYD? I'm on the phone to the bank now, in the queue, passed from one person to another....!!!

I'm so distressed as I really need to make a payment today with the money (for rent)!

Never could I have imagined that this can actually happen! It's only 2 months since another card of mine was fraudulently copied. My trust in banks has completely gone. Mind you I did get my money back last time, but this time it's just.... such a stressful timing... sorry for going hysterical.

Anyone else had this happen to them?

How is it aspie bashing Confused

PussInCoutts · 22/01/2017 19:20

Emma thanks! For an aspie it's important to feel like we make sense :)

Bubble Generally infantilising comments to someone who has said they have AS can be seen as aspie bashing. The undertone of 'you're not making sense' and 'aren't you weird'

OP posts:
StrangeLookingParasite · 22/01/2017 19:23

You do seem to be interrogating her, and focusing on the details which aren't the focus of the problem, eg:
Why were you withdrawing £1k in cash? Sorry I'm slightly missing the point but it does seem to be a huge amount to be withdrawing.

Irrelevant, none of your business, nothing to do with the problem at hand.

NameChange30 · 22/01/2017 19:39

There was absolutely NO undertone of "aren't you weird"

When I said it didn't make sense, I specifically said I wasn't trying to be rude and was just trying to understand.

Anyway, I'm not going to repeat all the things I said in my posts, you can re read them if you want!

Strange I don't think it is irrelevant or I wouldn't have discussed it otherwise. I wasn't the only person to make the point about bank transfers being better than cash withdrawals for large sums. However now the OP has said she is transferring between accounts in different countries, I get it.

This happened to my husband from a cash point in Spain. He did get the money back as the cash point didn't balanced but not until the day before we were due to fly him (and no longer need 400 euros in cash)!

NameChange30 · 22/01/2017 19:47

mrspeelywally
I have reported your post (personal attack).
If people don't believe me when I say I wasn't trying to be nasty, I don't know what else I can say tbh! I think it says more about you than it does about me.

I am genuinely sorry if I upset you OP and especially if you thought I was aspie-bashing. As I said before, it wasn't my intention. (Whether people believe me or not.)

StrangeLookingParasite · 22/01/2017 19:51

I don't think it is irrelevant or I wouldn't have discussed it otherwise. I wasn't the only person to make the point about bank transfers being better than cash withdrawals for large sums.

But none of this has any relevance, it really doesn't. She has lost, at least temporarily, £1000. Being questioned over and over about why, what was it for, why are you doing it that way - all irrelevant, and giving the impression of being suspicious about the whole thing.
Unnecessary.

cherrycrumblecustard · 22/01/2017 19:52

I wondered the same thing as Emma. I don't understand what the problem is. Just about every aibu thread goes off on a tangent

DebbieDownersGiveItARest · 22/01/2017 19:54

Poor op comes on for advice on what may have happened and gets grilled on why she wanted that much in cash out Grin

brummiesue · 22/01/2017 19:54

Why is the fact you have AS that relevant? I dont think anyone on here has remotely seemed like they were 'apsie bashing' Hmm

user1484313265 · 22/01/2017 19:56

Report it to the police. Once reported as a crime (maybe someone stole it when you turned your back), they will be allowed to access the bank's CCTV. In which case they will either see that you did not take out the money and/or that someone else did, or, that no money ever came out.

DanniiMinogue · 22/01/2017 20:04

brummiesue

It's relevant to the OP.

It's relevant because she's feeling out of sorts due to a regular part of her routine going wrong. Maybe other people wouldn't care so much and would simply hold fire until the Bank opens again but as she explained, shes also going on holiday tomorrow.

Most people would find it annoying/frustrating etc but when your routine is disrupted its generally more of an issue if you have AS.

Kr1stina · 22/01/2017 20:04

OP , people were trying to help you by suggesting alternative ways of doing things to avoid this problem again.

No one is bashing you. Just because you have ASD doesn't mean that people can't ask you questions around the topic . Lots of people were probably wondering the same thing.

PavlovianLunge · 22/01/2017 20:06

The interrogating and going off at tangents is unhelpful and smacks of troll-hunting 'oh, I thought the limit was £250', 'why were you drawing so much?', etc. Rude and unnecessary.

OP, make sure you call and tell the bank what has happened. Note the date and time, and the name of the person you speak with. They probably won't be able to resolve the matter immediately, so get a clear undertaking of when the will get back to you.

Ask, does the ATM have CCTV? If it does, it will substantiate your claim that the ATM didn't dispense any cash.

It's probably no help now, but when making an ATM withdrawal, always get a receipt, and check it, there and then, to make sure the dispensed amount shows. ATMs do sometimes fail to dispense, or dispense a lower amount than requested, but they are designed to recognise when this has happened, and your receipt should be evidence, if/when you need it.

JournosAreLazy · 22/01/2017 20:07

It nowhere near £1000 but I recently tried to withdraw money from a cash machine and the transaction went through as far as the machine making a sound as if it was about to dispense my cash and then an error message came on the machine stating that it couldn't complete the transaction.

I thought no more of it and it was only when I checked my internet banking about 5 days later that I saw that the money had been debited from my account and then re-credited to the account 48hrs later.

If I had checked my internet banking staright away I would've been panicking too. Hopefully the same will happen with you OP.

Lulu1083 · 22/01/2017 20:08

Kr1stina people can ask questions. When it's one poster going at the OP trying to trip her up, querying things that are none of her business then making passive aggressive comments it's shitty.

brummiesue · 22/01/2017 20:09

I am quite aware of all that danniiminogue, hence why I said 'that relevant'.
However it seems to have turned slightly into the OP getting offended and blamined her AS when anyone says something she doesnt like! Especially when combining that with the massive drip feed about the overseas bank account which - had it been mentioned initially - would have taken away a lot of the queries that have obviously bothered her.

NameChange30 · 22/01/2017 20:15

I wasn't trying to trip her up Hmm

I often ask questions as I like to find out a bit more before giving my opinion or advice. Lots of people are assuming there is a nasty intention behind the questions, which I find sad.

AIBU can be a weird combo of nastiness and touchiness, I certainly didn't want to contribute to either of those things Confused

ToadsforJustice · 22/01/2017 20:19

I tried to get £250 from a Santander ATM. The machine gave me back my card but ate the cash. My balance was minus the £250. I complained in the branch and they told me that it would automatically correct overnight. The money was credited to my account by the next day.

EmeraldScorn · 22/01/2017 20:26

I'm with Lloyd's and I can confirm that the suggestion that ATM withdrawals is limited to £250 - £300 daily is not correct, as I can withdraw £500 per day.

When I used to rent I would pay my rent by cash, it does happen because not everyone has access to/can be bothered with banks.

Some people in their replies are sounding quite accusing, relax for goodness sake.

zoemaguire · 22/01/2017 20:32

AnotherEmma you are being perfectly nice and getting an unfair bashing. OP you are reading undertones in her posts that are not there! She was not being passive aggressive at all.

MrsPeelyWally · 22/01/2017 20:37

Report what you like Emma it won't change a thing.

GimmeeMoore · 22/01/2017 20:41

How unfortunate, you must be so upset.no experience of this im afraid
Hope it works out for you

CurlsandCurves · 22/01/2017 20:43

I used to work for a bank. It should flag up that the cash machine hasn't balanced over the weekend and if you go in they'll be able to work it back to your transaction.
