£1000 disappeared into thin air!

WIBU to think this is not even possible??!!

I tried to withdraw £1000 from cashpoint inside a Lloyds bank yesterday.

The money didn't come out and the cashier convinced me it hadn't come off the balance, so I assumed I didn't have enough money and had miscalculated some dates of payments etc.

Just logged on to internet banking to find the £1000 has been taken off my balance!!!

WWYD? I'm on the phone to the bank now, in the queue, passed from one person to another....!!!

I'm so distressed as I really need to make a payment today with the money (for rent)!

Never could I have imagined that this can actually happen! It's only 2 months since another card of mine was fraudulently copied. My trust in banks has completely gone. Mind you I did get my money back last time, but this time it's just.... such a stressful timing... sorry for going hysterical.

Anyone else had this happen to them?

It's easily resolved, I work in a bank & we deal with claims like this all of the time. My bank would have the money back in your account by the end of the next working day. Then claim that money from lloyds, who would have an imbalance on their ATM.

I agree with the PP stating that the machines can't always cope with that many notes & although your daily limit is £1000 you may need to ask for it in two separate transactions.

Anyway, there's no need to panic there is a trail for everything these days. It will be recorded that the cashpoint did not dispense the money & you will get it back when you put a claim in with your bank.

Emma Have you had a bad day? Seems like you're being very unfriendly. FYI my taxes are impeccable. And I have had my vengeful ex threaten me with a forensic accountant, to which I asked my accountant and she said 'let him waste his money if he wants to'. Also, I am not dodging tax within legal limits either! Jeez.

Nippey - a really small amount of ATM's are stocked with £50 notes so it's technically possible to withdraw a max of £1250.00 from a standard ATM (25 x £50) - but banks don't like £50's in ATMs so it would be extremely lucky/rare for the op to have found one that has them.

An even smaller amount of new ATM's have been installed that can dispense £1k in one go as the slots are bigger. I know there are a couple at Heathrow and Gatwick (possibly other airports). And a couple of banks have introduced the larger slots recently inside their branches, usually as a staff reduction measure when they get rid of a counter - but again, very rare and i've only heard of it so far in a few flagship branches in London/Birmingham etc.

Probably 99% of ATM's are still going to give a max of £500 in one go.

SummitLove · 22/01/2017 18:46

The fraud team can access information quicker - such as whether there's been an issue with the ATM, whether they suspect the ATM has been tampered with, whether it's a "hacking" type fault. They are also quicker at getting the money returned to your account and can see whether and where money is being held.

Tikky · 22/01/2017 18:47

It's good that you spoke to a cashier at the time. Did you take her name by any chance?

WankingMonkey · 22/01/2017 18:47

Has anyone else had this happen to them or heard about this happening to anyone? Just seems like 'you had one job, cashpoint!!'

Happened to me once, luckily it was only 50 quid. Money went back on a few days later but the phonecalls I had with the bank were infuriating tbh, I was accused of lying to click on 50 quid a few times indirectly...why on earth I would do that when my balance was way above that I don't bloody know.

PussInCoutts · 22/01/2017 18:48

Cherry

I think people are just surprised, I didn't know either. I'd think the landlord wasn't paying tax though.

He is paying tax! Why are people so quick to judge and misrepresent?

I take the money in Cash and deposit to a personal acct of mine from which I pay to landlord - completely logged in!

I'm surprised that the cashier did not state your balance when she confirmed that the £1000 had not been taken.

If I thought £1000 had gone astray the first thing I would want to do is see with my own eyes by taking a balance printout either at the counter or back at the ATM itself.

Dagnabit · 22/01/2017 18:50

My husband withdraws cash to put in another account - he refuses to entertain online or telephone banking. He has only recently started buying on the internet but only after he took out another credit card with a £500 limit...just in case. So it isn't that unusual to handle your money this way; whatever works for the person. Personally, I'm too lazy so online banking is my saviour and having to bank a cheque is annoying

OP, I'm sure it will be all sorted and back in your account tomorrow.

PeridotPassion · 22/01/2017 18:50

Summit, I don't mean to be rude but all of this is rubbish.

The fraud team of the op's bank won't be able to get any information more quickly. Nothing concrete can be done until an actual person at Lloyds goes to the back of their ATM and counts/reconciles/fills it and error reports are generated. That happens automatically and the fraud team will be able to do precisely nothing to speed up the Lloyds staff and processes.

PussInCoutts · 22/01/2017 18:51

moveover thanks so much for your reassurance.

I did spend 2 hrs in complete panic. The worst possible timing. New home, new landlord, wanting to definitely pay rent on time, which I have always done anyway no matter where I've lived, wanting to stay here long term so definitely don't wish to look in any way less than a responsible tenant.

Also, going on holiday 6am in the morning! First holiday ever with DP after a horrible year of personal setbacks - was really wanting to be able to just relax and focus on DP for a few days as he's had such a hard time too Sad

Oh and the only way a Fraud team would be able to tell instantly if there was a 'hacking' or actual manual fraud going on with that ATM would be if they already had a case on it as it had happened to another of their customers.

In which case, the ATM would already have been knocked offline and out of service.

Feistype · 22/01/2017 18:52

A lloyds ATM once 'lost' £300 of mine! I telephoned them to ask where the money had gone and they essentially told me that it was in limbo. I think it turned up, on my available balance, around 5 days later.

They'll sort it for you, it's just such a huge inconvenience until then. Good luck!

NameChange30 · 22/01/2017 18:53

No, I had a lovely day thanks Smile I'm sorry you think I'm being "very unfriendly", that certainly wasn't my intention. I was just asking the question, which isn't the same as accusing you!

I hope your issue is sorted out soon. I was just wondering if it could be avoided in future by using bank transfers instead of cash withdrawals, that's all. (At risk of sounding like a broken record! Grin)

TondelayaDellaVentamiglia · 22/01/2017 18:58

you need to sort out internet banking...for googness sake, taking out 1k to put it into another account is sheer madness

Get it all set up properly and you could probably make it a one off thing, so that every month the money wafts itself to the other account and onwards to the landlord.

At worst you might have to do that every month...surely that's better than flogging about shifting wodges of cash.

BakeOffBiscuits · 22/01/2017 19:00

This happened to me a few years ago for £100. As other s have said, oh ine your bank and log it they will get back to you ina few days and they should give it you back.

NameChange30 · 22/01/2017 19:02

It doesn't even have to be one off / every month... there is such thing as.. wait for it.. a standing order Grin

KitKat1985 · 22/01/2017 19:06

This happened to me once. Tried to withdraw £100 and cash machine jammed and I never got the cash, but my balance was still deducted. It's fairly easy for them to rectify this because the ATM you tried to withdraw from will be £1000 up on what it should be, so fairly easy for them to verify what you are saying. It may take a few days to get the money refunded though.

PussInCoutts · 22/01/2017 19:11

Emma nothing like a pit of aspie bashing Grin

FYI there are very good practical reasons I don't have a standing order from an offshore acct to UK one. Reasons include the ridiculous amount of time it takes to transfer between countries (up to 5 days) so there, not such good advice standing order then Grin

Jesus

PussInCoutts · 22/01/2017 19:13

Emma because of your ongoing passive aggressive style, the demeaning "standing orders exist lollolz" etc

OP posts:
NameChange30 · 22/01/2017 19:13

Now you've explained that you're transferring money between accounts in different countries, it makes complete sense.

NameChange30 · 22/01/2017 19:14

It's not passive aggressive, I think you're reading too much into my posts tbh.
