Males in female prisons

WankingMonkey · 15/01/2017 17:25

I have noticed a fair bit of support for 'identification' over sex on MN. I am just wondering what peoples opinions are on males wanting into female prisons because they are 'trans'?

If possible, have a think, write out a reply...and then read this

www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/soham-child-killer-ian-huntley-9626220

As I have seen many defenses along the lines of 'noone would pretend to be a woman' and such. But here we have a clear example of this in action. And it is impossible to let 'some' do it and not others, isn't it. You can't make laws without clear boundaries of course.

I actually can't believe it has taken someone like Huntley to wake up a fair few of my friends, this is all over my facebook today with people suddenly u-turning on their previous stance...

I'm sure I read this week that a study was done saying most people who think they are genuinely in the wrong body are on the Austin spectrum and projecting their obsessional thoughts on to believing they are in the wrong body....

SpeakNoWords · 15/01/2017 20:53

Tara Hudson was released after serving 40 days of the sentence. Hopefully Tara will have learnt how to control their temper when drunk, to avoid getting a 10th conviction for violent behaviour.

Slimmingsnake · 15/01/2017 20:53

Austsic not Austin sorry

Slimmingsnake · 15/01/2017 20:54

Did she go back to being a man?

SpeakNoWords · 15/01/2017 20:56

I have no idea, but I imagine Tara went back to being Tara - a biological male who has surgically created breasts and blonde hair extensions.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 15/01/2017 21:00

'The idea of a transsexual who hates their body and has had or is desperately awaiting surgery is long gone.'

Can I just say though, these people still exist. And have various different opinions about whether the current fashion for including cross dressers, male presenting blokes who claim to be non-binary etc etc under the trans umbrella is a good or a bad thing.

NothingIsOK · 15/01/2017 21:04

Slimming - any chance you might recall where you read that study? Sounds interesting.

Slimmingsnake · 15/01/2017 21:06

Daily mail.....and another one said it was a form of mental illness..

And they just need some medication

Slimmingsnake · 15/01/2017 21:06

It's on the daily mail on line about 3/4 of the way through

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 15/01/2017 21:08

I don't think it's as strong as most trans people being autistic by any means, just that the rate of autism is higher than among the general population and it seems to be a factor in a number of cases (certainly a lot of parents with autistic children are talking about it).

Slimmingsnake · 15/01/2017 21:14

I don't know much about it to be honest....always assumed people who claimed to be in the wrong body were genuine....totally don't get the whole lady penis thing...you are either male or female....if you feel you are in the wrong body the doctor will help....apart from that it's all gobbledgook to me

Whatthefreakinwhatnow · 15/01/2017 21:43

Overcrowding is rife across all categories of prisons, nationwide. Then there's the public vs private issue- who would pay for these new units? G4S? SERCO? NOMS?

When area's such as offender rehabilitation, drug rehabilitation and mental health services in prisons are woefully under-funded, I cannot see any of them making provisions for a scant few things the cost of thousands of others.

Whatthefreakinwhatnow · 15/01/2017 21:44

*at the expense of thousands of others that should read

Bambambini · 15/01/2017 22:02

If you support current trans thinking and campaigning - then if Huntley says she is a woman - then she is and should be in the prison she feels aligns with her gender.

It doesn't matter what the crime is. Wife beater, thief, serial rapist etc - you can't make decisions like this individually.

DiggoryDiggoryDelvet · 15/01/2017 22:11

Do we really need five thousand threads about how trans people are all either evil rapists or mentally ill, and being trans should be outlawed.

We already know how many misogynistic hate-filled bigots are on MN, you don't need to keep proving it.

Extraordinary this utter all-consuming obsession with a type of person you will probably never meet in your life.

Sunnyjac · 15/01/2017 22:15

Feckitall the government ministers are rubbish but have faith in us professionals actually working in prisons to know what we're doing

SpeakNoWords · 15/01/2017 22:16

No one is saying any of those things Diggory. You could actually engage and point out what you think is misogynistic, hate filled and bigoted, rather than try to shout people down.

Mummamayhem · 15/01/2017 22:18

I would not want to share a prison cell with someone with a penis. For me that's it. Women in prison are largely very vulnerable and this situation could be exploited.

Megatherium · 15/01/2017 22:21

Surely this subject has been done to death round here several times over?

Whatthefreakinwhatnow · 15/01/2017 22:23

Actually it really does matter. Your index offence will determine your category and the kind of establishment you need to be in to allow you to access appropriate rehabilitation- different prisons offer different offender behaviour programmes; have different drug treatment facilities, some have specialist mental health units. You can't just look at the person and choose where to put them, you have to assess their areas of risk to address these and (hopefully) stop them from reoffending.

CharlieSierra · 15/01/2017 22:23

Diggory do you think that if Huntley says he's a woman now he should be moved to a women's prison?

SpeakNoWords · 15/01/2017 22:24

As has every other subject too. People can discuss what they want, surely.

Bambambini · 15/01/2017 22:24

Already happened though. Murderer/torturer Paris Green was moved to a women's prison and seems Paris had sex with several inmates so authorities moved them to another prison.

CharlieSierra · 15/01/2017 22:26

Same question to Megatherium ? If you don't think we should discuss it, is it ok for Huntley to be moved to the women's estate?

Bambambini · 15/01/2017 22:28

Wasn't there a recent case where a TW avoided prison as women's didn't have the necessary therapy for child sex abuse offenders?
