Bad hairdo

sam2069 · 13/01/2017 14:53

I decided to go a bit mad and try to get a fashionable hairdo.

I went from long, brown and curly to bleached and grey. It all went horribly wrong and my lovely curls were fried. I then decided to go even more mad and had the right side and back of my hair shaved so I have an undercut. The remaining left side is cut so that it is level with my ear. A very dramatic difference.

I really hate it, I'm freezing cold and feel stupid. I have been wearing a big slouchy hat a lot (I do wear this hat a lot anyway because I'm outdoors almost constantly). But, one day last week, it was a bit warmer and I decided to take the plunge and go to pick up DS from his primary school (he's only being going there since October) without the hat. There was one other lady who I have spoken to in the past and she looked at me wide eyed. I kind of did a rueful grin (like WTF was I thinking?!). Thought no more of it.

Now though, every time I see this lady, she looks embarrassed, looks away as quick as possible and won't smile! I'm pretty gobsmacked. Why would she act this way - it's only a bloody haircut?! Surely if it's that bad she should feel sorry for me, not blank me?

Yep, she thinks you've had cancer

Pistachiois50pmore · 13/01/2017 22:51

Is it helpful to ask if you have seen that Peep Show episode where Jez is chatting up a girl he thinks has cancer, but it turns out she's just wearing a big hat?

WaitrosePigeon · 13/01/2017 22:51

Holy shit Shock

Sorry.

Erm, wig?

DontTouchTheMoustache · 13/01/2017 22:52

I don't think it looks bad at all OP, very quirky and very different. I think she maybe didn't recognise you...

sam2069 · 13/01/2017 22:52

Oh my gosh, thanks ladies I haven't laughed out loud since the hairdressers lol

ClaryIsTheBest · 13/01/2017 22:52

It doesn't look that bad. I mean, your hair was really pretty before.. but it certainly looks better without the hat imo.

sam2069 · 13/01/2017 22:54

I did actually buy 2 wigs but I didn't have the nerve to wear them.

Blacksox · 13/01/2017 22:54

Sorry, but I would make an assumption if you went from dark curls to a hat with no hair showing.

You've had the chop now, so I think you need to just embrace it and that hat is doing you no favours.

TreeTop7 · 13/01/2017 22:54

You're really pretty but even you can't carry that hairstyle off.

I think she believes you've been ill and now she's embarrassed about being caught looking at your head.

DontTouchTheMoustache · 13/01/2017 22:55

It is very statement though, and I mean this with no negative impact at all to anyone, it is a style often associated with LGBT society. Is it possible she is suddenly clutching her pearls?

McWeedie · 13/01/2017 22:55

I really like the shaved side, the longer side doesn't do you justice, you have fab bone structure. If it were me I would say sod it and have it all cut off, you could definitely pull it off Smile

PacificDogwod · 13/01/2017 22:59

I love your new hair cut!

Maybe the lady who looks at you funny suffers from Resting Bitch Face?

angelikacpickles · 13/01/2017 23:02

It's not grey? It's light brown surely. I think you pull it off pretty well.

BestIsWest · 13/01/2017 23:03

I agree, the shaved side looks great, better than the longer side, you'd look great with it all cut short.

sam2069 · 13/01/2017 23:04

Moustache, that's more or less what my Mum said, Well, she actually said, "Oh my God, you look like a lesbian. Not a nice one either - you look like you wanna kill somebody!"

I do need the hat - it's really, really cold without my hair and I work outside!

OP posts:
citybushisland · 13/01/2017 23:06

I think it looks great!

NotAnArtist · 13/01/2017 23:08

Ok. It's actually not that bad.
The longer side is what's ruining it IMHO. And the colour.
If it was me, I would shave the other side and either have a Ruby Rose quiff or a ruffled/spikey top. And then I'd either bleach it white or dye it black. Thae current colour is not strong enough for statement hair.
Now you've chopped it I think you really need to commit. And FWIW, I think your old hair, while very pretty, drowned your lovely face a bit. The short hair shows off how beautiful you are.

sam2069 · 13/01/2017 23:09

I'm aiming to gradually cut off the crappy frizz but I don't think I could do totally cut. I did think about it but I think I would regret it.

I know it's light brown, the feckin grey washed out immediately!

ClaryIsTheBest · 13/01/2017 23:09

I like the shaved side. It really does suit your face, I agree with that comment.

The other side is a bit... meh. Why not cut it shorter and style it a bit... less neatly? A slightly edgy/tousled look?

It currently is imo a slightly weird mix between lesbian or cool rocker chick and soccer mom on the other side. Both styles are fine individually...

PacificDogwod · 13/01/2017 23:10

So, wear the hat for working outside - I love a good woolly hat.

And let the pearl clutchers clutch if that is what they are doing.

It is only hair, it will grow.

I went from v long wavy hair to a short pixie cut last summer and love it, but agree it is cold, people stare(d) and not everybody is a fan (DH included).
It is funny how everybody feels entitled to not just having an opinion but to actually share it. I've had 'it makes you look older' 'it makes you look younger' 'it's great' 'it's terrible' 'it's a stupid midlife crisis thing, isn't it?'

TheWitTank · 13/01/2017 23:11

The shaved side looks great on you -you can carry it off which is rare! I think the problem is the bob side. Its far too thick and the colour is definitely off -is that the grey they tried to do? Or have you chucked a colour over the top? I would go to a salon and get an experienced stylist to take a look and make some suggestions.

Peanutbutterfingers · 13/01/2017 23:12

I think you look fab in both (but yes, lose the hat) however I recognise people, especially those I don't know that well by their hair, I wouldn't recognise you as same person, esp if I just knew you from school gate

sam2069 · 13/01/2017 23:13

I'm really shocked at all the compliments. I expected the roasting, so I'm very surprised, thank you very much!

OK then, let's have a poll.

Should I keep longer hair or should I shave?

OP posts:
ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 13/01/2017 23:13

It's nowhere near as bad as I feared. I like it more than the curls. However, they've not done a great job of the cut, so I'd go elsewhere & be prepared to pay decent money to get a better cut.

I think it's quite edgy & cool & you can carry it off, for sure.

BadKnee · 13/01/2017 23:13

Hat - horrible, (but we've all got one)

Hair looks OK. You have good bones and nice features and actually the shorter hair suits you better (I think) than the longer hair.

I wouldn't recognize you unless I knew you well and you were a good friend. It completely changes your "look".
