Bad hairdo

I decided to go a bit mad and try to get a fashionable hairdo.

I went from long, brown and curly to bleached and grey. It all went horribly wrong and my lovely curls were fried. I then decided to go even more mad and had the right side and back of my hair shaved so I have an undercut. The remaining left side is cut so that it is level with my ear. A very dramatic difference.

I really hate it, I'm freezing cold and feel stupid. I have been wearing a big slouchy hat a lot (I do wear this hat a lot anyway because I'm outdoors almost constantly). But, one day last week, it was a bit warmer and I decided to take the plunge and go to pick up DS from his primary school (he's only being going there since October) without the hat. There was one other lady who I have spoken to in the past and she looked at me wide eyed. I kind of did a rueful grin (like WTF was I thinking?!). Thought no more of it.

Now though, every time I see this lady, she looks embarrassed, looks away as quick as possible and won't smile! I'm pretty gobsmacked. Why would she act this way - it's only a bloody haircut?! Surely if it's that bad she should feel sorry for me, not blank me?

Neither. Get a much better cut. Get the long side chopped, but not shaved.

I prefer your new cut.
If you are not happy, experiment with it for a bit and find how you like styling it. I find that more edgy hairstyles take a bit of getting used to, but once you know how you like it, it works.
I have my hair short again and platinum. I'm happy with it - but noticed that I do need at least a bit of make up on or I look washed out.
Doesn't take long to slap on a bit of mascara and foundation / blusher though :)

Earlgreywithmilk · 13/01/2017 23:17

I think the lady is more embarrassed at her reaction to your haircut than offended by the haircut itself. She probably realises you saw the shock on her face and it'll be like the elephant in the room when you see her.
I like both haircuts - do whatever you feel like doing (but if u shave it all off ur head'll be even colder in this weather)!

TheWitTank · 13/01/2017 23:17

Perhaps something like these? Less of a solid wedge of hair, more textured and choppy or equal up the sides and have a short cut

I wouldn't cut it to all short.
The short side will grow very quickly (if it's too short for you now), when that is not so short you could have a trim to blend it in, you will probably grow in to it in a few weeks

PickledCauliflower · 13/01/2017 23:21

I wouldn't cut it all short - that short say 🤓

NotAnArtist · 13/01/2017 23:21

I agree with the PP who said the longer side is "soccer mom". Nothing wrong with that as a look, but I'm guessing it's not what you were after as you shaved the other side.
I stand by my previous comment. Shave the other side, keep it quite long on top so you can play with different styles, and get a bolder colour.

PacificDogwod · 13/01/2017 23:21

Yes, get the longer side re-cut by somebody who knows what they are doing.

The short side will grow very quickly.

PickledCauliflower · 13/01/2017 23:21

Should! 🤓🤓🤓

PickledCauliflower · 13/01/2017 23:22

I think a bolder colour would work too.

DanceTheBlues · 13/01/2017 23:22

Shave the whole thing off or go for a fully half shaved effort like the pictures TheWitTank has shared. Stop covering up in massive hats! You have gorgeous bone structure and could probably pull off a bald cap if you ever needed to. If someone on the school run wants to pull a sad face at you then that's her fault, not yours.

lorelairoryemily · 13/01/2017 23:25

I actually think the shorter hair suits you, shaved side not really my thing but it's not bad, it needs a bolder colour though

sam2069 · 13/01/2017 23:26

My biggest problem with it is that the bleach has ruined the curly texture of my hair. I cannot get it to curl for the life of me. It's just frizzy as hell. I straightened it for the night out, after trying to curl it, as it was the lesser of two evils.

This was the look I was attempting and I think it would have worked if it weren't for the frizz.

As for the other Mum - we spent time chatting most lunchtimes when we went to pick up our DSs for a couple of weeks, as they were both being phased in to full time. She has seen me regularly with my hair tied back and crappy hat on, so she knows my face. It was only when I took hat off and revealed my hair cut that she has gone weird on me. So now I have no one at this school who speaks to me at all.

I think the curls are beautiful.

The new style isn't god smackingly awful, but yeah...i think you need the long side cut much shorter and styled better.

TheFutureMrsB · 13/01/2017 23:32

Get some deep treatment on the hair to help with the dryness and damage maybe that will encourage the curls to come back. I'd definitely go for a dramatic colour, now it's short anyway you can have fun with it, so jealous I'd never be brave enough to go that short again 😔

TheWitTank · 13/01/2017 23:32

The hairdresser really should have talked you through what the outcome could be -it isn't inconceivable that bleaching natural curls will ruin their natural shape and turn hair into a frizzy damaged mess. It's a really poor cut too. Sorry op. How did it look when you left? Have they offered money back, recut by different stylist etc?

Earlgreywithmilk · 13/01/2017 23:32

Why on earth would someone stop speaking to a fellow mum because they've had a drastic haircut? It'd make me like u even more cos I'd think u were a bit brave and unconventional.
My best mate has a different wacky haircut every time I see her, the last one she looked like a Benedictine monk!!

Ginkypig · 13/01/2017 23:33

Iv not read past your first 3 pictures but

i fucking love it you wear that hair with pride!

But then I'm a bit alternative so I might not be the typical audience.

Get rid of the hat though you look way way better without it.

PickledCauliflower · 13/01/2017 23:37

My hair is bleached, I use toners and oils to stop it going brassy and add a bit of depth and shine.
Lee Staffords range for bleached hair is really good (and often on offer at Boots 3 for 2)..

NotAnArtist · 13/01/2017 23:40

I can sympathise with the texture thing. My hair isn't very curly, but it falls into nice relaxed waves when it's at peak condition.
However, after it's bleached it looks like Hermione Granger hair.
From the first movie.
You just need to deep condition the fuck out of it. I recommend coconut oil overnight every night before it's due a wash, and Philip Kingsley Elastiser once a week until it's better.
I'd also revise my recommendation of a bold colour. Before I said either bleached white or black, but if bleach causes your hair to frizz, go for black. Or stick a pink or purple on there for a bit!

NotAnArtist · 13/01/2017 23:44

*Elastisizer
Or something like that, anyway!

CondensedMilkSarnies · 13/01/2017 23:48

What does it look like if you leave it to dry naturally ? I think it would look great with a bit of a wave .

sam2069 · 13/01/2017 23:54

Right I had hair bleached and greyed at a salon where stylist did explain pitfalls and it was at my own risk. This was the result after 2 bleaches and 1 fine highlights with grey tone on.

This look lasted until the following day, grey came out rapidly and I couldn't do sweet fa with it.

The original plan with my usual hairdresser, (who, incidentally refused to bleach my hair - how dumb am I?), was to have the undercut come spring time (when it's warmer) and have my naturally grey hair loud and proud (sick of dying it constantly), hence the "trendy" grey as an attempt to blend the natural. He also tried to convince me to not stop dying my hair as he thought the grey would age me (I'm 47).

I had a knee jerk reaction to the texture of bleached hair and had it cut off. I think the cut that he has done is ok, it's just my inability to style it well? Now I just feel like a twat and wear my hat with pride lol.
