Going to a really, really expensive hotel for a wedding. AIBU to want to go back to my student days ??

DP says I am.......I'm saying we can't bloody afford it, never mind £7 or so for a drink each on top.

AIBU in wanting to pull my old student trick of gift wrapping boxes of wine (( to sneak then in innocently ))then having my own wine on tap for the night ?? That way we'd only have to buy one drink.

Honestly, if it wasn't for the fact it's a close family member I'd be pulling a sickie. At least this way we can affordably drown our sorrows at all the money on travel and a hotel we've had to spend 😑😑😑

I would. I drink vodka and always take that with me sneaked in my bag, that was I only need to buy the mixer soft dtink.

Lots of hotels charge the bridal party fines of guests are caught with their own booze so if you do it be very sneaky!

Do it. We still do it. We were at a wedding recently where a vodka and lemonade - just smirnoff, nothing fancy- was £8.

It's definitely something I keep in mind when I am booking events as I wouldn't begrudge £3-4 a drink but £8 is just taking the piss.

Having to stay the night yes as it's in the middle of nowhere and we don't drive. As it is we're setting off at 5 am so we only have to pay for one night at the stupidly priced venue and will leave the following day.

I've been doing this for a few years - turned up with 3 bottles of fizz for the 'happy couple' once and shared it around. Took a bottle of gin once too and always wondered if the barman knew how pissed I was getting off tonic

I get the gift bags from the pound shop too #pureclaas

If I were to do this i'd check the wine list and buy a couple of bottles from the list. Then stick them in a gift bag.

We did this at a wedding in the Summer.

We didn't even need to buy one drink - there was table wine and when that (quickly) ran out, dh and I just kept our glasses and topped up from the two giftbags containing wine under the table. It was very subtle, no one noticed.

I don't have very expensive tastes and the wine we were drinking was about £8 a bottle - better than the £8 a glass we would have had to pay by buying it!

In the evening we just went back to our room to top up rather than lugging a gift bag with us - worked fine and saved us a fortune.

Though rather wonderfully it seems I am dull and respectable looking now. I went to an event where I was warned booze was banned. My mate said they absolutely would search us and confiscate. Everyone around us was searched. We got waved through . Totally taking booze next time.

Hotels almost expect it now. If they didn't charge such extortionate prices in the first place then you wouldn't have to!!!

When we got married, it was at an incredibly expensive country hotel. Some parts of our family aren't that well off (we aren't particularly either but DD got a super dooper police pension and wanted to splash out)
At the end of the night, when the lights went on and the hotel staff started cleaning up, they lifted the table cloths off and under the tables there were piles of empty bottles!!!

If you are staying over just keep the booze in your room, family members at my wedding were caught drinking their own at our evening reception and the hotel were going to stop the party if they didnt remove it

I have a family wedding in a few months. It's at an extremely expensive hotel with a 500 mile round trip and the best part is we are only invited for the evening do. Ugh. I feel your pain.

We do this on nights out -no one is ever suspicious of a gift bag! Make sure you use some tissue paper inside the bag to make sure the bottle's covered!

The plan is to put ithe in a gift bag with a hole cut in and the tap angled so all I have to do is press the glass back at little. Back in the day we used to just wrap the boxes but I'm angsting over the tap now old age has set in

I agree with dolly-kept it in your room. There was a big scene at a wedding I was at when someone was asked to stop drinking their own alcohol. They refused and security were called to escort them out. It all got very unpleasant.

I can totally see why you're annoyed though.

Variation on a theme: a great aunt in the lull between reception (free drinks) and evening do (paying) took a bottle of the hotel mineral water up to her room and refilled it with gin.

The best tip I was ever given is reasonable sized should bag, unbox a box of wine, leaving the bag with tap and then hang the tap over the side of the bag.
