Wearing mother-daughter Xmas dresses to the school disco

I have name changed for this because I think I'm about to get flamed! Xmas Blush

Bought mother daughter Xmas dresses to wear in the privacy of our home on Xmas day.

Dd who is six said she wanted to wear hers to the disco. I said fine. This morning she alluded to us matching and when I checked, she had assumed I would be wearing mine to! She now won't wear it if I don't (but isn't being stroppy, just happy to choose something else if I'm not game).

This makes me uncomfortable, but I'm working on getting out of my comfort zone to build confidence so I am potentially up to the challenge.

Reasons to refuse:

  • embarrass myself or her
  • draw too much attention to ourselves
  • look like a dick (see point one)

Reasons to agree:

  • she may very soon find this idea repulsive and I think I might want to have this experience
  • it's Christmas
  • confidence building/leaving comfort zone

WIBU to agree/WIBU to refuse?

Help me mumsnet! (And be kind!)

YAY. Saw the update.

Also, when my DD was 5/6 she used to ask me to 'skip sideways' down the main street with her. So I did and ignored everyone who stared at us. Now I look back I'm so glad that I had that fun with her :-)

peanutbuttery24 · 19/12/2016 21:12

Wear it - she's only 6 once! As a Primary teacher I wouldn't expect any children to be mean to DD about this, and any parents who think something - sod 'em! Given how chaotic a school disco is, are you sure anyone would notice?!

1DAD2KIDS · 19/12/2016 21:16

What's the worst that can happen? Are the fashion Gestapo going to take you away? I think most people will think you are a great mum doing things like this for your dd. Just make sure in conversation that you let it be know clearly that you wore it at your dd's request so people don't think your some kind of weirdo mum who likes parading around with a little dressed up mini me. And if anyone does snigger or comment, well let them eat cake. Its not about them its about you and your dd having fun.

thedogsvagina · 19/12/2016 21:27

Good for you OP. glad you had a good time.

Wish we had matching dresses now. I fear DD will be too old for them next year. She still thinks I'm amazing. I just know it's not going to last much longer...

Starlight2345 · 19/12/2016 21:30

NotAMammy · 19/12/2016 21:31

I say this absolutely falls under the theme of 'fuck it, it's Christmas.'

Go for it. Xmas Grin

ssd · 19/12/2016 21:35

well done op!!

in ten years she wont be caught dead been seen out with you, so enjoy the moment whilst you can Grin

Greenifer · 19/12/2016 21:42

Aw, well done, OP. I bet you made your little girl's day. I know mine would love this (and she is 10!) but not sure I'd have the guts. Good on you.

Kelsbells32 · 19/12/2016 21:57

I've had to join mumsnet just to reply...aww do it I've also got mother daughter santa swing dress and was meant to just be for Xmas day but I took my 5 year old for breakfast with santa and we both wore our dresses. I had three people approach me and say how nice my dress was and it was lovely to see us the same....mine isn't identical though I've had black and she's got white. Do it and don't care what anyone else thinks.

Supermam · 19/12/2016 22:20

Well done, OP! You did the right thing! Merry Christmas x

Notsure1234 · 19/12/2016 22:28

A friend of mine posted pictures of her and her 2 year old wearing those style of dresses over the weekend. I think it's sweet.

TheStoic · 19/12/2016 23:36

Good for you, OP. If I'd seen you, I would have thought it was absolutely fantastic.

Helloitsme87 · 20/12/2016 00:06

Honestly it's sweet. She's 6. Someone I know wore hers, with her 11 year old and her 4 year old daughter. She posted it on Facebook and as lovely and seeet as it is, I did cringe.
But maybe that's because the girl is 11 and all three of them were matching (sorry for being honest)

Sleepandchocolate · 20/12/2016 00:34

Go for it! It's Christmas. I totally intend to do this next year.

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 20/12/2016 00:39

I got hubby and son to wear their matching Christmas jumpers to a party today... amused me a lot and they looked cute

BlueStockingUK · 20/12/2016 01:04

Do it, it's wonderful, She wants to be the same as Mummy, that's flattering & lovely. Do it because you love her.
Of course she may be embarrassed at 20 looking back. That's all of us included.
Enjoy being 'samies' !
You'll be sobbing in your pillow before long, when she won't go shopping, for walks, snuggle. If I saw you both, you'd me make all fuzzy & warm inside, it's a lovely thing to do
:)

Sparklefish99 · 20/12/2016 06:45

So glad you did this! What a lovely thing to do for your daughter and what a wonderful mum you are to have doubts but to pluck up the courage and do it anyway to make your daughter happy. She must have been so proud. Really pleased for you. Hope you have a lovely Christmas!

McButtonwillow · 20/12/2016 07:44

Brilliant op what a lovely memory you have given your dd Smile

theonlygeorgie · 20/12/2016 07:47

I'm 30 and my mum is 66 and we buy the same jumpers/tops as they suit us both... This means we occasionally wear the same outfit! Grin

jasmine1971 · 20/12/2016 08:53

The question you ask yourself is this: which will you wish you'd done the most; will you look back and wish you HAD worn the dress, or look back and wish you HADN'T worn the dress. Life is too short for regrets. I say go for it and make some lovely memories ;-)

RubyRoseViolet · 20/12/2016 09:00

So glad you did it OP. I wouldn't give it a second thought, I love doing fun things like that to make Dd happy. . People are so vain for heaven's sake!! It's just a dress, it's cute to be matching if you want to be. Mainly though, who cares what other people think about it?!

Underparmummy · 20/12/2016 09:35

Best christmas story so far this year. Well done OP!

BearFeet · 20/12/2016 10:11

Yay!
We all wore silly hats to school this morning. If anyone thinks it looks odd, fuck 'em.

SpidersFromMars · 20/12/2016 10:18

Do it!

Rachel0Greep · 20/12/2016 11:10

Well done, OP. Lovely memory to have, in years to come.
