Wearing mother-daughter Xmas dresses to the school disco

I have name changed for this because I think I'm about to get flamed! Xmas Blush

Bought mother daughter Xmas dresses to wear in the privacy of our home on Xmas day.

Dd who is six said she wanted to wear hers to the disco. I said fine. This morning she alluded to us matching and when I checked, she had assumed I would be wearing mine to! She now won't wear it if I don't (but isn't being stroppy, just happy to choose something else if I'm not game).

This makes me uncomfortable, but I'm working on getting out of my comfort zone to build confidence so I am potentially up to the challenge.

Reasons to refuse:

  • embarrass myself or her
  • draw too much attention to ourselves
  • look like a dick (see point one)

Reasons to agree:

  • she may very soon find this idea repulsive and I think I might want to have this experience
  • it's Christmas
  • confidence building/leaving comfort zone

WIBU to agree/WIBU to refuse?

Help me mumsnet! (And be kind!)

I thought thatGrin

Just wear it and make your DDs day. I always help out at DDs discos and can usually be found wearing a stupid outfit much to her delight. No one will care.

Nodney · 19/12/2016 17:56

That's just so lovely of her OP. I have three boys so could never do that! I'd do it in a heartbeat and to hell with what anyone thinks!

MooseyMouse · 19/12/2016 18:13

You'll both look fab. Have fun.

They don't do them small enough for ddEnvy roll on next year...

AngryGinger · 19/12/2016 19:35

It's Christmas, I'd just wear it. Is anyone who matters to you even going to care? I think it's quite sweet really.

Jumpmom1 · 19/12/2016 20:04

Wear the dress, enjoy the moment with your daughter. In years to come u will regret not doing it

Patriciathestripper1 · 19/12/2016 20:08

Looks fab!! Go for it Xmas Smile

mysistersimone · 19/12/2016 20:10

If it makes your daughter happy and you aren't hurting anyone go for it. I would love to match my daughter but I'm not brave enough

Jesus, I dread to think what some of you would say if you saw the ridiculous get-up I frequently wear throughout the year.

OP, wear the dress and enjoy yourself.

Fuck what anyone else thinks. Your DD won't be little for long.

H1ppy · 19/12/2016 20:13

I have just worn matching dresses like these with my daughter to the school disco and it was fantastic. Yes I felt silly. Yes I looked pretty silly but she loved it and, eventually, so did I :-)

Alwaystired122 · 19/12/2016 20:15

Wear it. I think it's cute and I would definitely do matching outfits with my dd. Wear it and enjoy it ❤️

bumsexatthebingo · 19/12/2016 20:17

As your dd is 6 I'd wear it. If she was a teen then no and I doubt she'd be asking

Bianca1978 · 19/12/2016 20:18

Of course you should! DD wants you to! Deffo style it out with some Christmas earrings and whatnot.....I'd deffo do it if my DD asked me (says the person who just chased Santa up the street wearing a onesie)

MimiSunshine · 19/12/2016 20:20

Wear it, they're clearly novelty dresses, people will get it.

If you were wearing an obviously child's dress or she was wearing a skin tight body con number itd be different.

For what it's worth I would wear it (and very nearly ordered one but I'm bfing and they're not bf friendly) and I saw a woman put in one very similar on Friday night for a meal.

It's Christmas, you can go out in fun clothes. And if anyone comments you just smile and say it's what your daughter wanted and why not you're not too uptight for a laugh at Christmas [big smile]. That'll take any potential negative wind out of their sails

MatchingXmasDresses · 19/12/2016 20:22

I did it!

Dd was so proud - not at all embarrassed. I felt a little uncomfortable but not excruciatingly so.

I feel proud I did it. When I say I'd do anything for my daughter I don't know if I always totally mean it, but I proved it to myself a bit more today! Today I avoided teaching her that what people think of how you look is too important. I'm glad about that.

This time last year I wouldn't even have asked her teacher certain questions in case I looked stupid. It seems I've come a long way this year with a lot of therapy and hard work.

Thank you everyone I'm buzzing!

Do it. At 6, none of the other kids will remember and store it up as a reason to mock when they're teenagers. Enjoy!

Jannrooo · 19/12/2016 20:24

Oops I was late! Well congrats and good on you! 👏

Crispbutty · 19/12/2016 20:24

I have seen dozens of women wearing these dresses in the last week when I have been out. They are fun and it's Christmassy. My bosses wife and their toddler wore matching ones to a party the other night too.

livsmommy · 19/12/2016 20:25

I bet you both looked fantastic! My 6 year old and I have matching dresses and wore them last year to see Santa, we will be wearing them again this year also 🎅🏻

SpikeWithoutASoul · 19/12/2016 20:26

The fact that the dress is hideous and naff is exactly why it is fine to wear it! It's so obviously a bit of Christmas fun that you won't look silly at all, just like a mum who is happy to do something lovely for her daughter.

It is bloody awful though! Grin
