Wearing mother-daughter Xmas dresses to the school disco

I have name changed for this because I think I'm about to get flamed! Xmas Blush

Bought mother daughter Xmas dresses to wear in the privacy of our home on Xmas day.

Dd who is six said she wanted to wear hers to the disco. I said fine. This morning she alluded to us matching and when I checked, she had assumed I would be wearing mine to! She now won't wear it if I don't (but isn't being stroppy, just happy to choose something else if I'm not game).

This makes me uncomfortable, but I'm working on getting out of my comfort zone to build confidence so I am potentially up to the challenge.

Reasons to refuse:

  • embarrass myself or her
  • draw too much attention to ourselves
  • look like a dick (see point one)

Reasons to agree:

  • she may very soon find this idea repulsive and I think I might want to have this experience
  • it's Christmas
  • confidence building/leaving comfort zone

WIBU to agree/WIBU to refuse?

Help me mumsnet! (And be kind!)

I'd do it.
Wouldn't think twice. I'd find it hilarious. DS went through a phase of insisting we wore the same colour clothes. We must have looked right numpties, but hey-ho, he was happy and proud.

Daisyfrumps · 19/12/2016 12:35

You just need some dangly Christmas pudding earrings to go with it Wink

ChickenPoop · 19/12/2016 12:36

The dress I created in my mind is 1000 times worse than the reality. Do it!

DialsMavis · 19/12/2016 12:37

My daughter is 6 and would absolutely love this. I have older DC too and don't think people would take the piss as child infant age. Its a laugh. We are in London as people seem to think it might make a difference somehow (I don't personally)

Allthewaves · 19/12/2016 12:37

I have reindeer one iv just worn to help out at the school. I wouldn't match though, sorry, it's a bit weird

willconcern · 19/12/2016 12:38

Really? No way I'd wear the same dress as my daughter to her school xmas party. But then, I wouldn't buy matching mother/daughter dresses anyway. If I saw you, I'd think you were bonkers, tbh.

You do whatever you like, OP!

ItsNiceItsDifferentItsUnusual · 19/12/2016 12:39

I think it's a sweet idea for at home on xmas day but I'd be pretty taken aback if I saw a mum and daughter in matching dresses in public. Sorry!

user1477282676 · 19/12/2016 12:39

Wear it and get some flashing antlers too! If you go the whole silly hog then it's not cringey at all.

bloodymaria · 19/12/2016 12:43

I think you should do it for your daughter, it's going to make her happy.

I was at a Christmas party with my dd on Saturday and there was a mother and daughter wearing the same not dissimilar dress, same idea but different patterns, and the daughter was maybe a couple of years older than yours.

SecretTryer · 19/12/2016 12:44

Loud and proud

OliviaBensonOnAGoodDay · 19/12/2016 12:46

I think this is honestly one of the sweetest things I've ever read on her. I'd do it, to make her happy. I think you could make that dress look fine, if you do your hair and make up nicely, and wear nice shoes. It's obviously not one of your everyday outfits!

There's not a big window in their lives where they want to wear matching clothes Grin

ShowMeTheElf · 19/12/2016 12:47

Wear it!
Style it out with black leggings and boots and a Santa hat/baubles for earrings
It's a school disco. Your DD will be thrilled.

snowgirl1 · 19/12/2016 12:47

If I saw DM/DDs wearing the same clothes at any other time of the year, I'd probably think it's a bit odd - but if I saw you both wearing a novelty Christmas dress at a children's Christmas party I'd think you were just up for a laugh. Especially, as other posters have suggested, if you wore antlers or Christmas earrings or something.

DubiousCredentials · 19/12/2016 12:50

If I saw a mum and her six yr old daughter wearing that same matching dress at our (small, lovely, village) primary school disco I would think nothing of it really. And nobody would laugh.

Squiff85 · 19/12/2016 12:52

I'd do it! Go for it :)

redheadbarmaid · 19/12/2016 12:53

I saw a mother and daughter matching xmas dress combo last week and thought it was cute!

At six I don't think anyone would laugh at her for this. Not as if she was 14, but then a 14 year old would think it a terrible idea.

OliviaBensonOnAGoodDay · 19/12/2016 12:59

DP just said that he'd wear it if our DD asked him to!!

One of the many reasons I love him.

RhinestoneCowgirl · 19/12/2016 13:00

I made matching skirts for me and DD (not Xmas) and we have been out in public wearing them, at her insistence.

I'd go with it, she's not going to be 6 forever!

BToperator · 19/12/2016 13:03

I think you will look like a dick, but no more so than people wearing daft Christmas jumpers. If it will make your DD happy then I'd say go for it if you have the nerve! As others have suggested maybe add some silly earrings or similar, so it is obvious you are just having fun with it.

musicinspring1 · 19/12/2016 13:04

Go for it op! My dc go to a small school and parents dress up all the time when helping at discos , parties and fairs. No one would bat an eyelid here!

Rachel0Greep · 19/12/2016 13:04

Go for it. It's a bit of fun.
IMO, Chrustmas stuff is not meant to be tasteful, fashionable stuff anyway. When I see someone wearing a Christmas jumper, it always makes me smile - in a good way, I mean.

Rachel0Greep · 19/12/2016 13:04

...Christmas...

CaraAspen · 19/12/2016 13:06

Yes go with it! If I saw that at a school party, I would be charmed! Everybody will think it is so cute!
As for people saying it's awful, no it isn't. Did the clever critics really expect the daughter's dress to be a version of this below...
