Wearing mother-daughter Xmas dresses to the school disco

I have name changed for this because I think I'm about to get flamed! Xmas Blush

Bought mother daughter Xmas dresses to wear in the privacy of our home on Xmas day.

Dd who is six said she wanted to wear hers to the disco. I said fine. This morning she alluded to us matching and when I checked, she had assumed I would be wearing mine to! She now won't wear it if I don't (but isn't being stroppy, just happy to choose something else if I'm not game).

This makes me uncomfortable, but I'm working on getting out of my comfort zone to build confidence so I am potentially up to the challenge.

Reasons to refuse:

  • embarrass myself or her
  • draw too much attention to ourselves
  • look like a dick (see point one)

Reasons to agree:

  • she may very soon find this idea repulsive and I think I might want to have this experience
  • it's Christmas
  • confidence building/leaving comfort zone

WIBU to agree/WIBU to refuse?

Help me mumsnet! (And be kind!)

I actually really like the dress Blush
Do it, it will be brilliant. I always coordinate with the baby, she seems to like it as she tries to dress me in her clothes all the time! Matching with mummy will make your DD so proud.

MistyMeena · 19/12/2016 13:34

Do It! I wouldn't even think twice about it! Your DD will remember if you don't do it a lot longer than everyone else will remember that you did.

I'd go OTT with tinsel on head/ tacky earrings and just style it out. If anyone gives you an odd look tell the truth and say you feel a bit of a tit but DD wouldn't wear hers unless you did!

Bringmewineandcake · 19/12/2016 13:34

Do it! It's fun, they're not little for long.

Valeriemalorie · 19/12/2016 13:35

Go for it. I don't think anyone would take any notice at our school. You'll just look like you have got into the spirit of things. It's just a dress and it will make your daughter happy. Not a big deal at all.

Cuppaand2biscuits · 19/12/2016 13:38

Do it Do it Do it!
My son and I have matching Christmas jumpers, he thinks it brilliant! People look a bit bemused but honestly I couldn't care less!

Underparmummy · 19/12/2016 13:39

Its fine because its a silly christmas dress. Its obvious its just for giggles.

LunaLoveg00d · 19/12/2016 13:40

I would not be seen dead in matching clothes to any member of my family. How nauseatingly twee.

NotAPuffin · 19/12/2016 13:43

I'd do it, styled with a Santa hat, silly christmas earrings and a lot of laughter : )

If you give anyone the impression, even for a second, that you're taking it in any way seriously, you're lost.

DailyFail1 · 19/12/2016 13:46

Wear it with opaque tights, heels and own it. Dress looks like it could even be sexy with a few accessories lol

JaneAustinAllegro · 19/12/2016 13:46

poor luna, must be hard to maintain such a sour attitude!

It's a novelty dress, the other kids will give you major props for wearing it - do it. If it was a pair of matching Boden tasteful party dresses, I'd say no - but this is FUN

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 19/12/2016 13:47

I'd just do it and not give a hoot what other people think. We generally spend too much headspace on other people's irrelevant views, I think.

TheCatsMother99 · 19/12/2016 13:48

Wear it. It's Christmas after all and that means as much fun and silliness as possible IMO.

CaraAspen · 19/12/2016 13:50

Someone is nauseating. Don't know about "twee" Smile Ugh - a such a silly word.

Crumbs1 · 19/12/2016 13:52

Absolutely not. Why on earth would outdoor an adult want to dress like a child? You'll be sniggered at behind your back or to your face. She is a person not your doll. Ghastly idea.

Bluntness100 · 19/12/2016 13:52

If you give anyone the impression, even for a second, that you're taking it in any way seriously, you're lost.

LunaLoveg00d · 19/12/2016 13:54

Because Crumbs it's Christmas! You know, that time of year when common sense goes out of the window and parents are dictated to by 6 year olds. Hmm

Loubilou09 · 19/12/2016 13:56

You will look like a dick - don't do it

museumum · 19/12/2016 13:59

the dress is horrific but i think that makes it ok.

if you'd been 'tastefully' matching then i'd be a bit wtf Hmm?

but with these dresses at least you're very obviously going down the 'fancy dress' route and it would make me laugh - so i say go for it. just make sure your dd understands you both look fun and funny and doesn't get hurt if anybody does laugh.

BearFeet · 19/12/2016 14:03

Good fun. Go for it.

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 19/12/2016 14:03

Yes, of course you should wear it! Xmas Grin

Not because your 6 year old is "dictating" to you Hmm, but because it's a bit of completely harmless fun to make your child smile - why not?

I'd think nothing at all of it if I saw people wearing matching Christmas clothing I've seen plenty around here already. If it were all year round it might look a bit "twee"!

McButtonwillow · 19/12/2016 14:04

I think it's a lovely idea- go for it!

ofhorse · 19/12/2016 14:07

I would absolutely wear it. The fact that it is such a fun dress makes it just a jolly festive thing... enjoy it!! Everyone will love this. They would in our school.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 19/12/2016 14:07

Crumbs that doll comment you made is nasty and unnecessary. OP's daughter is the one who wanted to wear the same to the disco.

Mirandawest · 19/12/2016 14:08

Definitely do it Xmas Smile
