Wearing mother-daughter Xmas dresses to the school disco

I have name changed for this because I think I'm about to get flamed! Xmas Blush

Bought mother daughter Xmas dresses to wear in the privacy of our home on Xmas day.

Dd who is six said she wanted to wear hers to the disco. I said fine. This morning she alluded to us matching and when I checked, she had assumed I would be wearing mine to! She now won't wear it if I don't (but isn't being stroppy, just happy to choose something else if I'm not game).

This makes me uncomfortable, but I'm working on getting out of my comfort zone to build confidence so I am potentially up to the challenge.

Reasons to refuse:

  • embarrass myself or her
  • draw too much attention to ourselves
  • look like a dick (see point one)

Reasons to agree:

  • she may very soon find this idea repulsive and I think I might want to have this experience
  • it's Christmas
  • confidence building/leaving comfort zone

WIBU to agree/WIBU to refuse?

Help me mumsnet! (And be kind!)

I think it's sweet.
My DD would have been the same at 6.
It'll will be a fun memory for you both Smile

MumofWombat · 19/12/2016 13:07

I think my daughter would love it if we had matching outfits.
You'd totally pull it off with antlers or a santa hat, it would show that you have a sense of fun!

ImtheChristmasCarcass · 19/12/2016 13:08

Oh, go on and wear it!

I was thinking you were talking about some hideous taffeta red/green plaid number with velvet collars a la the matching dresses of the '80s. Yours are just cute novelty dresses that no one will take 'seriously'. Throw a tinsel bow in your & DD's hair and spread some Xmas spirit!

Mum/daughter outfits were all the rage when I was little (early '60s). I was always so proud and felt so grown up when Mum and I 'matched'.

MrsHathaway · 19/12/2016 13:09

I am currently wearing a dress no more tasteful (very similar shape) and have no school disco to excuse me.

Mind you, my three sons aren't matching.

Go for it!

PebbleInTheMoonlight · 19/12/2016 13:09

My daughter's disco (out of school activity) had two different mums who did this with their daughter's (not in the same friendship groups so not a coordinated effort). Virtually identical dresses to yours. Nobody pointed and stared and I didn't hear any unkind mutterings behind their backs.

It's not what I would do (I don't even own a Christmas jumper) but I'm not remotely bothered if someone else did this.

This could be your one chance before its too uncool and for better or worse you can always remember that sweet/embarrassing/funny (delete as applicable) time you wore matching Christmas dresses to disco Smile

Clankboing · 19/12/2016 13:09

Ah its lovely. Do it. I remember my son at a valentines disco when he was 5. DJ said to everyone 'Choose someone to dance with but it must be someone you love' and he ran up to me! He's 16 now. Please do it. They are only young once.

We were in a hotel in Dublin at the weekend. There was a very 'South Dublin' group, with a mother and daughter in matching dresses. They looked quite nice and the little girl seemed really pleased that the mum was joining in. For her part, the mum looked like she needed the champagne to help...!

MrsHathaway · 19/12/2016 13:12

Did the clever critics really expect the daughter's dress to be a version of this ... Pfft

Fucking hell. Clicking through to that link is a serious case of "WTF Photoshop". Nobody is that shape unless they've had an accident with a shark.

Do it OP, if you and your daughter want to.

It can't look half as contrived and dreadful as I was coerced into when working in a secretarial pool of three. We were all secretaries to one boss. The prima (seniority secretary) decided that it would be nice if we all dressed the same. There was no uniform and I think what triggered it is secretary no. 2 coming in wearing a t-shirt with a cartoon thingie on it.

Prima-sec duly got out the uniform catalogues but nothing appealed. So, she went to her trusty Gratton or whatever it was and selected some things for our approval. We ended up with black skirts (fine) - some shiney, slippery blouses; one in hot pink and one in a bright purple and - the piece de resistance - a dress that I can only describe as bridesmaid-like. It wouldn't have look out of place had we been trailing behind a bride anywhere in the country. Shock

This was before mobile phones in common use so we had a rota of clothing so we always knew what we were going to be wearing.

I'm sure we were laughed at quite a lot, particularly when there was a fire drill and we were in 'bridesmaids' garb... tripping down the stairs in pastel, floral dirndl-type dresses, behind our boss who was hurrying along ahead. Blush

So your dress, OP, is small potatoes. We were 21-35 years old with no excuse.

Enjoy matching for the disco, it's a feeling like no other, I promise you! Xmas Grin

Fanfeck · 19/12/2016 13:12

Me and DD (5) wear ours out and about proud as punch every Christmas Eve! Feck it, it won't last long!

MsUnderstanding · 19/12/2016 13:12

Do it. I do lots of stuff that makes me look like a dick for my kids. sometimes I even enjoy it

UnbornMortificado · 19/12/2016 13:13

I like it and think it would be sweet.

I'll just add I'm not known for having good taste.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 19/12/2016 13:13

MrsHathaway, you can actually achieve that shape if you do a hip-tilt. If you can't see the model's legs, I'd put money on it that this is what she's doing for the photo.

ragdoll700 · 19/12/2016 13:16

My Sil wore something similar with her daughter yesterday to visit Santa and came to a family party after it was quite sweet really

CesareBorgiasUnicornMask · 19/12/2016 13:17

DO IT.

Says the person currently sitting wearing elf ears and a singing hat in a major London hospital Xmas Grin.

DeepanKrispanEven · 19/12/2016 13:19

It won't be a source of embarrassment in years to come. All kids do daft things when they're 6, the other kids will probably be nagging their mothers to get matching Christmas clothes too.

Jaxhog · 19/12/2016 13:23

Please wear it. Just think of the fun you'll have when she's 20 and you show the photos to her fiance!

PinkFluffiUnicorn · 19/12/2016 13:26

Go for it, lovely memory's to share & laugh at when your both older

TheRealBarenziah · 19/12/2016 13:28

Do it! I wouldn't think twice. I think it's a really cute idea. If I saw you I'd think you had a great sense of fun.

carrotcakecupcake · 19/12/2016 13:28

I have seen at least two friends (actual ones) on Facebook who have worn similar matching mum and daughter dresses in the past week. Go for it!

MyBonnieLiesOverTheOcean · 19/12/2016 13:28

I would definitely wear it! Do it with confidence and a "tis the season" sense of fun.

mydietstartsmonday · 19/12/2016 13:28

Oh absolutely wear it, it is fun and you will both look back with fond memories. If fact I hope you have jingle bell earrings to match

diddl · 19/12/2016 13:32

I think because it's "novelty" it'll look like fun.

Benedikte2 · 19/12/2016 13:32

Make a point by wearing a Santa hat as well, or tinsel in your hair. If you treat it like a joke then you cannot be made to look ridiculous. Tell your adult friends it I'd DD's idea and you thought it would be fun.
This will be a Christmas to remember!
Seasons greetings
