To wonder why people dislike Tess Daly so much?

I don't particularly like her. She's a bit try hard. But she's a lot better than Bruce Forsyth who I had to fast forward through.

I really don't understand why some people have such an intense dislike of her.

I have no idea who Tess is but I HATE Claudia Winkleman. She reminds me of all the bitchy, popular girls at school and comes across as really vacuous.

SapphireStrange · 13/12/2016 11:58

I think they come across as funny and likeable precisely because their wit and intelligence comes through the innuendo.

And not all their humour is sniggering and innuendo-based.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 13/12/2016 12:16

sterling really? I disagree with you on that point but even if there were the odd comment about a man's appearance/marriage, it's primarily women - about other women (with the odd man thrown in for deflection).

Is is women who make these comments, not men. Not all women do but there is obviously something deficient in the women that enjoy being so gratuitously spiteful.

Covered everything have I?

sterlingcooper · 13/12/2016 12:22

Lying - I am approaching this from the angle of what I observe on mumsnet. I'm not sure that celebrity females do get criticised more than celebrity males here, going on my own observation, though I could be wrong. Peter Andre is another one who springs to mind as getting regular stick from all angles on here.

As far as whether it is women who do this more than men, well this is obviously a predominantly female forum so I can't comment on that.

KimmySchmidtsSmile · 13/12/2016 13:42

I concur that the St Peter Of Orange has received far more flak on these boards than any other sleb. I might have contributed I would argue the tone might have been > humourous but playing devil's advocate, not sure his missus would feel that way. So yes, men who have taken a ribbing/slating....
Peter Andre
Paul Hollywood
Tom Hiddlestone
Stephen Fry
Matthew Wright
and that's just off the top of my head.

Women who have been slated include:
Katie Price
India Knight
Taylor Swift
Amanda Holden
Cheryl Cole
Caitlin Moran

And Liz Jones/Katie Hopkins but many criticisms are due to the latter's opinions/"journalism" although at least Ms Jones was incredibly hurt by the vitriol.

Oh and Jack Monroe and Paris Lees. Some would claim rightfully so.

There is a perception that all celebrities are "fair game". Having engaged in sleb twaddle in the past I can't be a hypocrite about it, I have indulged in the tittle tattle. I am, however, an equal opportunity critic. That said some criticisms on this thread were way below the belt (self-respect with regard to her dp, casting couch aspersions). Thankfully she won't read it.

oldmum22 · 13/12/2016 14:32

I like both Tess and Claudia but what I absolutely detest is those God awful VTs just before a couple are due to dance . The "I thought I would take you to a Sumo wrestling match, so you get the fell of a foxtrot", I think DH fears for my sanity ,as whenever they appear in all their fakery I start muttering to myself and pacing the floor :-)

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 13/12/2016 14:48

oldmum oh yes - they are just embarrassing!

ShebaQueen · 13/12/2016 14:49

This thread has made it into the DM! I am quoted too Blush

Bodicea · 13/12/2016 14:50

I think Claudia is just so good she makes her look dull in comparison

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 13/12/2016 14:53

The one-shoulder dresses are my main issue with her. Just WHY?! Huge girl-crush on CW, though Grin

KimmySchmidtsSmile · 13/12/2016 16:30

Why embarrassed Sheba? You praised her. Everyone on here knows they could be quoted by the Mail, they Robby dog enough stuff for their articles. Ironically the article claims MN users were defending her rather than having a Bitchfest (and yes, I include myself in that although my screenshot comments defended her mostly like all SoS articles it is all cherry picked/selective).

JunosRevenge · 13/12/2016 16:37

Snapcrap has it...

It's not misogynistic to say you find a TV presenter lacking in talent - it is misogynistic to call this thread 'bitchy' however!
^
Just because we are women commenting on a woman we are 'bitchy'?

Oh the irony.^

I think she's crap. I think the show would be much better hosted by Zoe and Claudia.

Peachesandcream15 · 13/12/2016 16:46

Oh god. Oh god I'm on the DM.

I'm described as a baffled mother. I assure you all I am not! Really!

I've never even posted on AIBU before....

Not sure I will again...

OP posts:
OurBlanche · 13/12/2016 16:51

Really? Ah Blanche will have another stern word about lazy journalism.

Don't know why she bothers, they seem to be moderated and never published Smile

DeepanKrispanEven · 13/12/2016 16:55

Apparently, if a Bake Off contestant started crying, Mel and Sue would get in front of them and start swearing so the film couldn't be shown. Kudos to them. I can't really picture the likes of Ant and Dec doing that.

KimmySchmidtsSmile · 13/12/2016 16:56

I am now picturing you peaches scratching your head in a confused fashion WinkGrin
I think people criticising technique is absolutely fine. And I did do. I think slating someone for sticking by their feckless husband, making out the woman slept her way to the top and that she is only pretty/clotheshorse and essentially vacuous is mean. Is it meaner than calling someone wooden? Yes, because slagging off someone for not LTB has sweet fuck all to do with her job as a presenter. I have had a voice boon thing in my face twice now for radio and went to pieces twice. It really is harder than it looks.

OurBlanche · 13/12/2016 16:57

Oh! That one was! Maybe I should time it Grin

DiegeticMuch · 13/12/2016 17:01

Baffled mother! Hilarious!

Tess is pretty good I think. I like her partnership with CW. Couldn't care less about her marriage but I used to enjoy Vernon's Saturday radio show, he's a natural. I think that Tess can be a bit patronising at times.

Re Tess, Claud, Zoe and Darcey: I love the fact that the BBC's most successful show has 4 mid-fortysomething women involved rather than youthful eye candy (although they're all pretty I guess). I feel the same about Bake Off. Good to see Sandi Toksvig getting QI too, and experienced women Clare Balding/Gabby Logan/Hhazel Irvine doing so much of the sports. Popular show Homes Under the Hammer employed Lucy, and that only ended because of her daughter's health problems. Last but not least - the fabulous Victoria CM on Only Connect.

SapphireStrange · 13/12/2016 17:52

Apparently, if a Bake Off contestant started crying, Mel and Sue would get in front of them and start swearing so the film couldn't be shown.

I've read that a few times too. Makes me love them even more.

ZouBisou · 13/12/2016 18:06

I wonder if the person who wrote that 'article' is also a mumsnetter...

I can't believe that counts as some form of journalism! I guess it's just pure click bait for sheer ad revenue.

derxa · 13/12/2016 18:28

Clare Balding/Gabby Logan/Hhazel Irvine doing so much of the sports
Oh God the holy trinity!

derxa · 13/12/2016 18:31

I like both Tess and Claudia but what I absolutely detest is those God awful VTs just before a couple are due to dance . The "I thought I would take you to a Sumo wrestling match, so you get the fell of a foxtrot", I think DH fears for my sanity ,as whenever they appear in all their fakery I start muttering to myself and pacing the floor :-) Grin Well put!

Sparklingbrook · 13/12/2016 18:59

The only way to watch SCD is to record it and sit there with the remote zipping through everything but the actual dance, judges comments and the scores.

wowfudge · 13/12/2016 19:08

Sparking I agree! Apparently the 'comedy' VTs are down to the producer. I preferred them way back when there was lass pratting about.

Sparklingbrook · 13/12/2016 19:11

I remember Len Goodman not liking all the faffing with props at the beginning and he used to moan about it. This was years ago. But now it's every dance.

The comedy VTs are unwatchable, especially when the small children appear. Probably wondering why Mummy/Daddy are dancing not with each other.
