To wonder why people dislike Tess Daly so much?

I don't particularly like her. She's a bit try hard. But she's a lot better than Bruce Forsyth who I had to fast forward through.

I really don't understand why some people have such an intense dislike of her.

She is not a good presenter, very wooden. Much preferred Bruce Forsyth.

W8woman · 11/12/2016 18:10

Who a television presenter does or doesn't sleep with doesn't affect their presenting skills Blanche

It doesn't seem to have harmed the crisp-eating footballer or even Brucey.

SapphireStrange · 11/12/2016 18:13

1. lack of spontaneity/frozen reactions/difficulty coping off script
2. in same vein accused of being a Tessbot (newzoids sketch) "cold dead eyes"
3. lack of sincerity/authenticity in terms of switching charm on/off and switching accent on/off
4. wardrobe disasters

I concur with all these.

Also, she has no comedy timing – and no serious timing either, come to think of it – and she can't land a joke for love nor money.

It's interesting to see her alongside Claudia. Tess is of the old school of presenter and Claudia is much more the modern, self-aware kind.

Claudia is also much more relaxed and natural, and you get the impression the audience and the dancers and slebs genuinely like her, and vice versa.

KimmySchmidtsSmile · 11/12/2016 18:13

It would be snobby OP if the accent criticisms were based on her having a regional rather than london/RP accent but the criticism is that she exaggerates her Northern roots in the same way Cilla used to. Others claim she deliberately exaggerates her vowels at dramatic moments Confused andto watch for it but tbh my life is too short for such scrutiny.

W8woman · 11/12/2016 18:14

Anita Rani would be a good presenter of Strictly. She and Gleb were robbed last year.

Vanessa Feltz might be a good watch, or Victoria Coren Mitchell. An Oxbridge education shouldn't bar you from light entertainment.

W8men You may have assigned to me something I typed in humour... that being precisely the point I was somewhat obliquely making - hence the smiley face and somewhat stilted use of language.

Oh, and the last line... might have given you another clue as to my personal feelings on the matter Smile

SapphireStrange · 11/12/2016 18:16

Oxbridge education shouldn't bar you from light entertainment. Indeed. Claudia went to Cambridge.

Dress sense. For a model she has no idea what looks good on her body. YES THIS. Actually I'd just say that, for a model (I know this is bitchy), she doesn't look very good in clothes generally. Confused She always seems to have a unibosom, like a Les Dawson character.

ShebaQueen · 11/12/2016 18:17

I love Tess, I think live presenting on a show like Strictly is far more difficult than it looks and she does a great job and looks fabulous too.

I also love Claudia and Zoe and as others have said, great to see women presenting prime time tv.

Her ghastly marriage doesn't affect her presenting either. Why don't we judge male presenters on the basis of their marital dynamics?

OTOH her wooden presenting skills are definitely a concern because we all pay her wages.

KimmySchmidtsSmile · 11/12/2016 18:18

Her lack of comic timing endears me to her saph sometimes I count 2,3,4 and think Aw bless. An audience member on MN though really praised her warmth and spontaneity in between filming though so it's strange that she sometimes comes across all keanu on screen. Not sure I like this thread though: special place in hell for women not supporting other women aside, it just seems a bit...mean. She has enough on being married to that selfie-cheating twunt.

FlappysMammyAndPopeInExile · 11/12/2016 18:18

VANESSA PHELPS!!!!!!!!

What the hell have we ever done to you?!?!?!?!?!?

I find her wooden and a bit brittle. I don't think she does spontaneity very well and all of her 'off the cuff' remarks feel very forced and scripted. She comes across as being way out of her comfort zone.

Am sure she's perfectly nice IRL but she doesn't have that 'something' that makes her connect with the audience. Claudia does and it - unfortunately - shows TD up in sharp relief.

Blush using though three times in the same para. Reckon my presenting skills would be somewhat shite tbh.
As for why she stays married to VK, they have two kids, she probably stood by him for them. It's not what we all would do but it does not equal a lack of self-respect.

SapphireStrange · 11/12/2016 18:24

Absolument.

Brightbluebells · 11/12/2016 18:26

Dead behind the eyes.

KimmySchmidtsSmile · 11/12/2016 18:28

I think she thought the second time he'd been totally set up for financial gain for the ow. Mean-spirited in terms of my guilt talking: in being keen to sum up what others have said on other forums, I didn't see I had actually written a character assassination until I thought about how she would feel if she read it (but I did read somewhere that she didn't read about herself. Which would be a very good idea. Same as Tim roth doesn't. I would google myself all the time Grin).

eddiemairswife · 11/12/2016 18:30

I really don't have any opinions about her, except she treated Leslie like a sweet little old lady, and Claudia (gymnast) like a dear little girl. Perhaps, being tall herself, she is uneasy in the presence of small adults.

glitterandtinsel · 11/12/2016 18:35

I haven't said anything I wouldn't say to her face.

ElspethFlashman · 11/12/2016 18:36

Her stiffness wasn't so obviously when Brucie was there as she was coming across as "the professional one".

But now with Claudia who is so at ease and manages to make scripted stuff sound off the cuff, she does come across as a Robot, in the line of newsreaders etc.

Actually I think she would make a natural news reader. She's like Trevor McDonald - quite dull and proper and wholly unsuited to light entertainment.

Every time she sits in the audience between someone's Mum and Dad I cringe, as she really can't read the autocue and react to them naturally at the same time.

W8woman · 11/12/2016 18:39

Claudia is just very witty. She's very quick on her feet (no pun intended).

It must be galling for Tess to be constantly shown up by her colleague, though. Claudia is clever, funny, pretty, rich, has married well and is seriously connected. Tess is just pretty. I'd be eaten up with insecurity if I were her.
