To wonder why people dislike Tess Daly so much?

I don't particularly like her. She's a bit try hard. But she's a lot better than Bruce Forsyth who I had to fast forward through.

I really don't understand why some people have such an intense dislike of her.

from what i hear not a nice person but of course we dont know that for sure

i actually have found her presenting worse since bruce left she cant carry the main part alone

and if she says one more time we all loved it i might scream

AbernathysFringe · 11/12/2016 22:50

Daly seems like a guy's girl rather than a girl's girl like Winkleman. She's a bit of a nothing personality-wise too and another one who's not keen on her accent either,

AbernathysFringe · 11/12/2016 22:51

*I'm another one who's not keen...

theliverpoolone · 11/12/2016 23:09

Sometimes when I'm watching ITT I try to imagine Tess doing it, and it's completely impossible. She just doesn't do that natural chat and genuine interest, warmth and spontaneity that Zoe does (and Zoe also managed to carry it through to the main show when she stepped in for Claudia one year, so Tess's woodenness can't be blamed on the script). Don't know why people are saying this is misogynistic, when most of us are praising other women like Claudia and Zoe. i could name a fair few presenters of both genders who I find hard to watch.

I used to like her (compared to Brucie she wasn't too bad) and I used to love Claudia. Now tess has proven that she didn't get the job on merit as she can barely read an autocue, she's so wooden. And Claudia has gone way too far with her 'comedy' routine.

It might be great that two women are presenting the show but not so great when a lot of people think that they are vacuous and annoying

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 11/12/2016 23:16

Although the suggestion upthread of Anton du Beke is worse!

Between the two presenters and Michael McIntyre, Saturday nights on the Bbc are threatening to lower my IQ by the week!

LadyJaneMortificado · 11/12/2016 23:22

VonHerr

She's always reminded me of Marti Cain , unsure of spelling

Never thought of this before but yes I agree.

I find her really irritating. I can't stand her faux big smile and faked enthusiastic loudness. She seems completely fake to me - and totally lacks the sort of genuineness that say Terry Wogan had.

I also can't stand her accent. And that's not "snobby" - I just don't like it. It's ugly sounding. There are plenty of ( non-Radio 4 1920s cut glass BBc) regional accents that are perfectly pleasant. Her voice is gratingly awful.

I also don't think very much of her for choosing to stay with Vernon Kay after his playing away escapades -including repeatedly texting the same woman.

Woody67 · 11/12/2016 23:24

I can't bear her, she irritates the crap out of me. I can't exactly put my finger on why.

sterlingcooper · 11/12/2016 23:35

There are many presenters on TV that I am capable of comparing and contrasting, and Tess Daley isn't one of my favourites. Someone on page 1 has already recounted my reasons why stated on another thread.

I'd like to have seen Graham Norton get given this gig back at the start, instead of all the other more short lived ones he got. Would be weird if he took it over now though.

Basically I like presenters who are funny or at least capable of sometimes giving a wry nod to the fact that it's only a dance show (or insert other type of TV competition) and undercutting the drama of it all with humour. Tess is not capable of doing that.

I find her dull and insincere abut not offensive. I have read various interviews with her in women's mags over the years which have commented on her being cold and aloof which have probably rightly or wrongly clouded my judgement.

HelenaDove · 11/12/2016 23:52

I like the combination of Tess straight woman to Claudias comedic one. I think it works really well.

PunkrockerGirl · 11/12/2016 23:59

She's a talentless waste of space. As is Claudia.
The two of them together are a complete embarrassment. I used to love Strictly until this pair were given the gig. Even when Bruce gave up, he had more talent in his little finger than these two clowns could ever hope to achieve.

Christmasmice · 12/12/2016 00:07

I once saw Claudia interview Tess for ITT. This was years ago. Tess was so natural and relaxed and friendly and I thought it was such a shame she doesn't manage to show that side of herself off when presenting. She is so wooden and nervous and uncharismatic. That said I do think Claudia brings out the best in her when they're on screen together

That said I can't warm to Zoe. I loved her when I was a child. Now she seems so completelu fake and rather obsessed with being trendy and down with the kids, or what have you. She grates on me and I think she's utterly immature.

StripedTulip · 12/12/2016 07:32

I think people who don't work in entertainment really underestimate how difficult the job of host is, and what skills you need to project personality on camera and still appear comparatively natural. And that's before you get to the relentless focus on women's appearances. Most women in the business are on permanent diets - if you see them IRL, this is very clear.

So try this: try standing still, looking into the middle distance as if you are looking at a specific person (who isn't there), delivering a piece of script without making it sound as though it's been rehearsed, remembering not to include al; the phatic gestures & words (waving hands around, moving head etc, and all the "umms" and "ahhhs" that we use all the time. Do that for an hour, while projecting the most charming and energetic aspects of your personality, but in such a way that you are fairly anodyne and contrlled, but don't look artificial or false. Ad keep smiling. Keep sucking in your stomach, back up. Oh, and stop moving your head and hands around.

But keep natural and appear approachable so everyone thins you're their friend.

And hit your mark. Know which camera to speak to (don't know what hitting your mark means? Get off the floor).

It's actually quite difficult, and those of you who diss on camera presenters really have no idea. You can not warm to a television "personality" but you have no idea of the skills required, even by those whom you don't like.

sterlingcooper · 12/12/2016 07:36

Striped - I certainly don't think presenting is a doddle, or something I could do. But we all see hundreds of presenters on TV and can decide which ones we prefer watching without needing to know the ins and outs of it.

Sparklingbrook · 12/12/2016 07:36

Yes you really do need to be very skilled to be a live TV presenter. Especially as you need to come across as sincere, knowledgeable and totally in control whilst being able to go off script and deal with the unexpected. There aren't many that can actually pull it off.

Thisjustinno · 12/12/2016 07:37

I think people are fully aware of the skills required. That's why it's so obvious when a presenter lacks them.

Sparklingbrook · 12/12/2016 07:39

Exactly This. If 'live TV presenter was in a job advertisement certain skills would be in the 'essential' category.

Well if presenting is such hard work then you need to get someone who is good. Not have someone who doesn't add to the program and then excuse them because it's a hard job.

BertrandRussell · 12/12/2016 07:52

" An Oxbridge education shouldn't bar you from light entertainment."

I'm assuming that was ironic?

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 12/12/2016 08:03

Even though I hid this jealousy-riddled thread it still comes up in active. I don't understand the bile. Not thinking much of a celebrity, fair enough but the personal comments about her are horrible.

TrishanFlips · 12/12/2016 08:06

Well said Bertrand. Important to have regional accents on TV and BBC should be reflective of all taxpayers, not just Oxbridge and RP/southern accents. I think both Tess and Claudia do great jobs.
