To wonder why people dislike Tess Daly so much?

I don't particularly like her. She's a bit try hard. But she's a lot better than Bruce Forsyth who I had to fast forward through.

I really don't understand why some people have such an intense dislike of her.

Why do people assume jealousy all the time? I would not want to be Tess Daly. Confused

TheFlyingFauxPas · 12/12/2016 08:16

Is it really bad that I don't like that bit where Tess and Claudia do the "keeep dancing!" I feel it looks wrong being 2 women. I think it's the different dresses. If they were both wearing similar like ant and Dec it would be ok though.

Sparklingbrook · 12/12/2016 08:18

I don't like that bit whoever is doing it Flying. More cringing.

I like her and think she's a good presenter. I like Claudia and Zoe too.

Some people particularly on internet forums seem to dislike the vast majority of celebrities with a vengeance. They're all talentless, fake and horrible off screen, apparently. I used to read Digital Spy but the endless negativity wore me down Grin

BertrandRussell · 12/12/2016 08:30

I'm still being amused by " An Oxbridge education shouldn't bar you from light entertainment."

When we're watching telly, I look people up and casually point out which Oxbridge college they went to. My children call it "stealth tigering".

Incidentally, isn't it interesting how on threads like this, there were always people who have mysterious inside information........always negative.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 12/12/2016 08:36

Is that honestly a Stockport accent? I'm from reasonably close to there and it sounds much stronger than I'd expect.

I don't mind her, but I can't understand how a tall, slim woman with a nice figure can end up looking so odd in some dresses!

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 12/12/2016 08:38

Sparklingbrook, I think they rightly assume it because the comments on this thread are far beyond a "I don't like her presenting this show and prefer xyz presenter", to vile judgement of her husband cheating on her and "he must be bored" or "clothes horse with nothing inside", or "she has zero personality" or "must be shagging someone to get the job".

I dunno, pick any one of those pathetic statements you think doesn't fit jealousy. It underpins the whole thread. None of us even knows this woman. My heart sinks when I see women so volubly spiteful about another woman.

I'm really surprised at some of the posters on the thread. I didn't think they were like that.

RestlessTraveller · 12/12/2016 08:46

I'm not a Tess super-fan or anything but I find the criticisms of her completely ridiculous.

I don't think anyone who hasn't had the experience of holding two live shows a week together can criticise her presenting style. It's not reading from an autocue. The potential for things to go wrong on Strictly is huge. She also has deal with the massively inflated egos of the judges and over-emotional celebrities. I don't imagine it's a walk in the park.

Finding her accent irritating is saying that you find huge numbers of the population irritating and boils down to snobbery over local dialects.

Which just leaves her appearance. I wonder if we would like her more if she was less beautiful or a little chubbier? Either way it's just as bad as when people have a go at the way female politicians look/dress. Why does the way she looks have any baring on her ability to do her job?

BertrandRussell · 12/12/2016 08:46

That's interesting. I don't think jealousy's quite the right word, though. If I was going to think like a feminist, I would say that the patriarchy has a vested interest in women attacking each other, rather than uniting. And two women successfully presenting a prime time top rating show is so unusual that it's bound to attract negative attention. Claudia is more acceptable because she clowns and does the "girl next door"routine.

Interesting that people find them doing the "keep dancing" thing uncomfortable too............

Bettersleepoutdoors · 12/12/2016 08:52

Jealousy and misogyny
Those are the reasons for any strong dislike.

Personally I can't bear the show and have to leave to leave the room when in laws insist on gathering together to watch it at full volume.
But I am delighted to see that two women are "allowed" to present a prime time show rather than just the one of them being the arm candy for a man.
Wasn't that Arlene woman ousted from the show due to her age whilst Bruce continued to be wheeled out week after week?

Bettersleepoutdoors · 12/12/2016 08:54

And in a similar way Carol Vorderman was vilified for trying to present Countdown after The death of Richard Whitely.
Now they're happy to have the Patriarchal status quo of old man in charge and young, pretty dolly bird who astonishes us by being good at sums.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 12/12/2016 08:54

Bertrand perhaps you're right. What's the phrase then for 'not liking to see someone else moving ahead of them and wanting to keep them in their place by ridiculing their achievements, criticising the way they look and vilifying them personally about anything else'... there must surely be a snappy term for that?

RestlessTraveller · 12/12/2016 09:01

Dear god TheFlyingFauxPas you would have found the wedding I was at this weekend very uncomfortable. Both brides were in amazing wedding gowns and their first dance was beautiful. Or do you think that one of them should have 'manned-up' and worn a suit?

Sparklingbrook · 12/12/2016 09:37

I would hate to host a prime time Saturday night show. I would be rubbish at it.

But I want to watch one with a decent presenter.

StripedTulip · 12/12/2016 09:46

Totally agreeing here with Bertrand and Restless

It's frightening how easy it is to blame or vilify women in our culture. But That's the patriarchy for you! Criticise a woman for her looks, her dresses, her voice, without recognising her skills.

I find the critique of Ms Daley very interesting. I think k it's because we expect women always to be natural smiley, warm, and attractive in public roles. We don't regard that persona as crafted or work as a result of skill. So then people did her character because of course, she has to be natural in a particular way. Heaven forfend if she departs from that.

YetAnotherHelenMumsnet · 12/12/2016 10:59

Hi folks,
You might notice that we have made quite a few deletions on this thread. Broadly speaking, we know that we can't stop/shouldn't stop people having opinions about celebrities and the way they do their jobs but we do feel that commenting on a woman's own self worth (when in truth we have absolutely no idea about the circumstances that have led them to make personal decisions) is to say the least uncool. We'd be grateful if you could bear that in mind as the thread progresses, thanks.

ElspethFlashman · 12/12/2016 11:19

Basically I like presenters who are funny or at least capable of sometimes giving a wry nod to the fact that it's only a dance show (or insert other type of TV competition) and undercutting the drama of it all with humour. Tess is not capable of doing that.

Yes! I was trying to say that with my comparisons to newsreaders up thread but that's it. She is very good at keeping the show to time and moving on the judges.....but unfortunately it comes across as Presenter Bot 2000.

I HATED Brucie. And I much prefer the show now. He made me cringe. Mind you, I do occasionally find Tess makes me cringe too, just not as often. Last night for example when Claudia and AJ were kicked out and Tess roared "THEY'RE BOTH CRYING, LOOOOOOK!" Ugh, awful.

I think actually now I think about it, it's the eliminations where she winds me up. She grabs onto the eliminated celebrity with the Tess Death Grip of Agony and brays "SO EMOTIONAL!" into their faces. It's painful.

ElspethFlashman · 12/12/2016 11:22

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 12/12/2016 11:32

For me it's the way she repeats things the judges have said, whilst they are still talking. And the terrible links between end of dance and judging.

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 12/12/2016 11:34

As in, the way she always attempts to make a tedious link with the song choice

"Well, you really got us going!"

HandbagCrab · 12/12/2016 11:41

I think it's because as pointed out upthread, she's not university educated and she's got a working class northern accent. She's just a showgirl with a pretty face getting ideas above her station, thinking she's summat when she's nowt. There's always a way some women can exclude other women in order to feel superior to them.

W8woman · 12/12/2016 11:42

The show was almost unwatchable when Brucey presented it. He and Tess were so 1983 ITV.

Tess and Claudia are a huge improvement.

I'm sticking to my original opinion: Zoe and Claudia would be the best presenters.

There is another female primetime duo - Mel and Sue. They're not following the Bake Off to Channel 4. Worth an audition surely? More Oxbridge light entz for Bertrand.

Graham Norton and Richard Arnold are just about the only tolerable male presenters on TV. Ant & Dec make my trigger finger itch.

Thisjustinno · 12/12/2016 11:45

The patriarchy does pitch women against each other. It also causes the 'must be jealous' stuff that is never said when a man dislikes/criticises another man.

ElspethFlashman · 12/12/2016 11:48

Ant and Dec have definitely devolved into Presenter Bots over the years.

Autocue/earpiece/didn't he do well/I'm sure you're feeling quite emotional/move it along.

Shame.
