Builder nicked my candle!

maiacam · 06/12/2016 13:50

Hi I had a limited edition Jo Malone candle in my downstairs loo that had never been used and has been treasured since 2009.
We have builders working in the garden this week and have come in to use loo twice yesterday.
Noticed candle has disappeared and it was 100 percent there yesterday. Both builders are acting normal and friendly.
AIBU to feel rather miffed. Haven't said anything DH wants to but I am not so sure.

Help!

Please go and ask them. You will lay in bed thinking about that candle for bloody weeks if you don't

exaltedwombat · 07/12/2016 17:52

Can't be bothered to search 12 pages to see what they said when you finally asked. What was it?

maiacam · 07/12/2016 18:04

I was a bit miffed yesterday but over it today and have ordered a green Pina Colada replacement candle from Amazon to go in its place! Life is too short and have been pre occupied with work today. Have told DH to make the decision on whether to approach them or not so if he does will update.
Thanks for advise and input!

maiacam, I believe you and I've reported twogunslinger's troll hunting post. It's just attention-seeking to troll hunt on a thread but there you go.

Hope you enjoy your new candle when it arrives. I'm currently working my way through a JM Grapefruit candle that has taken me two years to light. What I've been waiting for, heaven knows? :)

Oh and: Footinmouthasusual Wed 07-Dec-16 00:32:57 If a man I fucked actually recognised a Jo malone/Emma bridgewater candle/broom rip off bollocks I coukd never fancy them again to be fair.

Mmm don't doubt it. Find better men maybe? All the men that I fuck know all about JM candles as they know I like them. Wink

=
How about we just stop trying to needle other women just because we don't like the same things as them, yes?

maiacam · 07/12/2016 18:14

Thanks I am going to use this one as soon as I get it - at least its taught me not to hoard!

Daydream007 · 07/12/2016 18:15

Maybe they knocked it off and it broke. Did you check the bathroom bin?

maiacam · 07/12/2016 18:17

Hi yes checked all bins inside and outside!

If they were a couple of middle class ladies catering for you at a dinner party, for example, would you be so quick to point the finger?

Well yeah, as a couple of middle class ladies would be more likely to nick a Jo Malone candle. However, it's quite possible one of the builders nicked it for his gf's Christmas present.

sparklybluelights · 07/12/2016 18:27

And why wouldn't a builder know how much a candle costs?

Yeah, why?

evalun · 07/12/2016 18:40

I would deduct the cost of the candle from the final bill. Non negotiable. It did not disappear into thin air.

AlabasterSnowball · 07/12/2016 18:44

Sorry OP haven't read the full thread have you tried looking here ?

Bahhhhhumbug · 07/12/2016 19:17

Is it possible that someone else has taken the opportunity to sneak into your house to use the loo whilst you were presumably leaving open access to that part of your house for the builders to use your loo/do the building work. My DH is a builder and I read this out to him and he said what often happens is once a house or part of someone's house becomes a 'building site' you often get randoms wandering in to have a nosey or even use the loo or whatever. It's almost as if the fact works being done and doors are open and windows out sometimes or a wall knocked down people seem to see it as a green light to just wander in. Some are understandable like the postie if the front door is open or off it's hinges or a delivery person needs a signature might wander 'on site'to find someone to sign. But DH can remember a few occasions doing work on someone's home and walking into a room to find a neighbour or passer by looking around usually followed by a 'Oh sorry you don't mind do you ? just having a look !' He's even caught them taking expensive tiles that have been stacked up to be re laid when work completed and indignantly telling him 'well you're just gonna throw them out aren't you ?' People are unbelievably cheeky and it's by no means usually the builders so there

limitedperiodonly · 07/12/2016 19:19

People you trust sometimes let you down. It's not a judgement on their class or social standing and it's ridiculous for some posters to want to make it about that or make ignorance of scented candles a mark of a manly man. How embarrassing to say that. It sounds like a conversation from 1974 about whether wearing aftershave marked a man out as homosexual.

The workmen were the only ones there. It's not going to be anyone else.

OP, I'm glad you've ordered a new candle and will burn it this time. I'm going to TKMaxx tomorrow to see what I can find on the candle front.

Better luck with builders next time. There are plenty of nice ones.

TattyCat · 07/12/2016 19:23

Actually, Bahhhhhumbug has a point. This happened many, many years ago to me. I was painting the interior of my parents new build and someone waltzed in, wanting a look around. I assumed that they knew my parents so let them only to find out later that they were a complete stranger. They clearly thought I was the decorator so felt entitled to wander in. Made me jump as well...

Cheeky git.

maiacam · 07/12/2016 19:24

Hi it is quite unlikely that anyone else came in as I was in the house all day and live down a lane so do not get many passers by. I had already seen postman that day already.
It is just a strange situation really nothing!

sorry should have put nothing similar to compare it too!

I'm off to light my Jo Malone - given as a gift, and I've forgotten about it.

ProseccoBitch · 07/12/2016 19:33

YABU for having a candle since 2009 and not burning it.

Just ask them for God's sake!

mammamic · 07/12/2016 19:38

I would need to know for my own sanity - totally understand your 'am I going mad and don't know it' feeling!

maiacam I would ask them when they've finished their work. No accusing anyone of anything - just a simple question ...

"Thanks for everything bla bla bla. Oh, by the way, out of curiosity as had a few days of thinking I was going a bit mad - do either of you know what happened to the candle in the downstairs loo?"

Direct but not accusing. Can be followed up with 'one minute it was there, and the next it was gone. I've asked the children as I thought maybe one of them had broken it by accident but they know nothing about it.'

Please ask them - I need to know now too!

RowenaRavenclawsLostDiaphragm · 07/12/2016 20:04

Any news on the candle?

Craigie · 07/12/2016 20:07

Collectable candles? Good grief, how pointless, candles are for burning. One of them probably dropped it.

hollyisalovelyname · 07/12/2016 20:08

Tatty it was probably a relation of mine. He's in the building trade and any new build/ renovation being done and he's in Grin
He can't help himself. He has to have a look around. To see what the competition are up to, the latest trends, is a good job being done or are they cowboys.
A new neighbour threw him out once when he was giving their renovation a quick peek.
They since became friendly when it was realised he meant no harm.

CasanovaFrankenstein · 07/12/2016 20:48

How annoying!!

Ask them if they have seen the candle - which has a curse on it. Burning it opens the Hellmouth.

JackLottiesMum · 07/12/2016 22:03

Sorry I can't see if you have asked the builders about it. But I was wondering if one of them took it to give to a wife/girlfriend.

Horsegirl1 · 07/12/2016 22:09

Please just ask them. I really think they may have nicked it . Why wouldn't they ? Bet it's now a xmas present for their wife !!
