Builder nicked my candle!

maiacam · 06/12/2016 13:50

Hi I had a limited edition Jo Malone candle in my downstairs loo that had never been used and has been treasured since 2009.
We have builders working in the garden this week and have come in to use loo twice yesterday.
Noticed candle has disappeared and it was 100 percent there yesterday. Both builders are acting normal and friendly.
AIBU to feel rather miffed. Haven't said anything DH wants to but I am not so sure.

Help!

I think the only way to rebalance the universe is to nick something of theirs and deny all knowledge. Their van, perhaps?

maiacam · 08/12/2016 10:56

Hi they were both using it until the candle went missing. After it went missing only the older one has been coming in to use it. I took the key out from the back door after it went missing so they had to knock each time not just come in and out as they had been doing prior to the "incident"...

I could nick their flask of coffee as they haven't had any from me since first day!

In all seriousness I really hate thieving on any level. Those candles are £40. It's a piss take. I would be tempted to go and tell them that too just to make myself feel better.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 08/12/2016 12:36

It would make me feel awful too. The fact that you've had to allow people in your home to do work for you and your 'things' may or may not be there because of them.

I think your candle has been taken as a present for someone. The only learning from that I suppose is to make sure that you light any nice candles so the wick has burned to the wax so that it's 'used' and therefore has no value as a present for a thief to take.

It was a special candle; I expect you'll find another, they're always cropping up but if you don't - you have your new one for now. My next JM one will be Wood and SeaSalt, I really like that fragrance.

I hear you though... despite all the joking on here, it's not a nice feeling and the only answer is that it's been stolen.

DailyFail1 · 08/12/2016 12:42

My builder accidentally knocked one of my candles in the loo and so chucked it - quite rightly assuming I wouldn't want it again lol. He did buy me a replacement though as a sorry.

maiacam · 08/12/2016 12:44

Thanks for your lovely message witchin wardrobe yes its just one of those things. The one thing I can add is that we have had loads of different tradespeople working here and it is the first time anything has gone walkabout so the vast majority of people are honest.

You hadn't used it in 7 years, what's the problem.

RubyRed6878 · 08/12/2016 13:04

Wow Chewie...do you not own anything past a few years that you'd be a bit miffed if it were taken?! Actually anything that you wouldnt mind being stolen?!

Sorry to hear this maiacam such a shame people do these things

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 08/12/2016 13:06

Chewie, I can't believe you don't see it! Because the candle was special, it is a limited edition and very expensive. Lots of people bite the bullet and light them immediately - but more I think keep them intact for a 'special occasion'. In fact, OP already said that, further up the thread... if you would have read it you would have known.

I have things that I save 'for best' and I need to get out of that habit because if not now, then when? I need to enjoy them and benefit from them now, not later. It's a really difficult habit for some to break this, 'keep it for best' one.

Chewie1986 · 08/12/2016 13:07

not a candle that I didn't use.

Jo Malone or Aldi.

Plenty of other things I would miss

But a 7 year old unused candle? No.

Chewie1986 · 08/12/2016 13:08

It was in the bathroom Lyinwitch, was she keeping it for the most special of dumps?

PeteSwotatoes · 08/12/2016 13:11

Stealing is a violation of trust and personal space. It doesn't matter where the special candle was stored. You don't expect someone you've given access to your house to steal one of your personal effects.

I would be upset OP.

No, of course not. JM candles are really not like Aldi (or any other brand). They are expensive because they're very fragrant. A bathroom/toilet is a good place for them really.

I get that you don't favour candles much, they don't mean anything to you. Fair enough. Try to think of something that you have and treasure. Now imagine that someone comes into your home and takes it. That is really the crux of it. No longer available for you to use anymore.

Scarydinosaurs · 08/12/2016 13:13

Well if it was in the bathroom, she must have WANTED someone to take it Hmm

I'm glad you asked and I hope the younger ones is further interrogated by the older one and an explanation of what happened to it comes to light.

hollyisalovelyname · 08/12/2016 13:14

Pete
Spot on.
The OP is getting laughed at because it's only a candle.
But stealing is more than that.

evalun · 08/12/2016 13:37

I have candles I have owned for 15 years! I'd be feeeewmin!!

maiacam · 08/12/2016 13:39

Chewie - I am not heartbroken over the wretched candle. It is the fact that someone helped themselves to it whatever it was!

OP posts:
Chewie1986 · 08/12/2016 13:41

are we sure it was 'taken'

or is it lost?

I lose stuff all the time with no rational explanation.

maiacam · 08/12/2016 13:47

Hi Chewie - it was there at around 1130 and gone about 4 1/2 hours later.
It was only me in the house during this time.

I can't think of any other explanation other than
a a ghost has moved it - unlikely as I don't think they favour newbuilds

b it was nicked

c it was accidentally broken and thrown away

Shirleyucantbeserious · 08/12/2016 13:48

Just seen the price! Fucking hell I like candles but do unicorns dance round your living room when you light jo making candles. I wouldn't have stuck that in my loo. I'd have built a shrine round it in my living room and had a ceremonial lighting for 10 seconds on special occasions! Someone's girlfriend is going to get a nice stocking filler!

SirChenjin · 08/12/2016 13:48

How do you lose something which has been sitting static in the same place for X number of years? Confused I lose things that I use regularly and move about - not things that have sat still for years.

maiacam · 08/12/2016 13:53

And I also admittedly do have the hoard something for best mentality that witch has mentioned - I am going to try and break it too!
