Builder nicked my candle!

Hi I had a limited edition Jo Malone candle in my downstairs loo that had never been used and has been treasured since 2009.
We have builders working in the garden this week and have come in to use loo twice yesterday.
Noticed candle has disappeared and it was 100 percent there yesterday. Both builders are acting normal and friendly.
AIBU to feel rather miffed. Haven't said anything DH wants to but I am not so sure.

Help!

it's obvious one of them nicked it as nice pricey-looking candles (and JM look pricey - always!) make good Christmas presents - they may not give a damn about Malone themselves but a mum/GF could have waxed lyrical about them (didn't intend the pun ha). Or more they don't know the brand and thought you may have loads of then and wouldn't miss one even though pricey-looking.

Footinmouthasusual · 07/12/2016 00:32

If a man I fucked actually recognised a Jo malone/Emma bridgewater candle/broom rip off bollocks I coukd never fancy them again to be fair.

Rachel0Greep · 07/12/2016 00:39

We have had various people, builders, painters, plumbers in the house over the last few years. Mostly here by themselves. Dammit, not one candle was taken. I don't own any Jo Malone candles though... Sad Grin

IHateDailyMailJournos · 07/12/2016 00:51

It would probably not smell very nice after so long.

Builder nicked my candle!
TwoGunslingers · 07/12/2016 00:55

ive been in the skip and the outside bin...incase I'm crazy

Ummm...there are a few clues...that you might just be...crazy...

KoalaDownUnder · 07/12/2016 01:06

SupperMummy 😂😂😂

What a fucking goldmine of a thread.

almondfinger · 07/12/2016 01:15

Someone on my site took one of my yellow hard hats (I had 2). He had the decency to leave me his very worn, covered in hair blue one though so that was nice!

My skip seems to be their own personal dumping ground. We are trying to fill it faster then they can. I don't know whether to say 'stop putting your crap in my skip' or if this is a perk of the job I don't know about.

I went to bed one night and left my lovely Jo Malone candle burning and it was completely burnt out the following morning.

Moving in to our house early next year before it is completely finished. Will be hiding anything precious, I reckon most of my tradesmen would know their way around Jo Malone.

I had a watch stolen by the landlady collecting rent years ago. It was by the bed when I went to work and gone when I came home. I bloody hate thieves.

OhMrsQ · 07/12/2016 01:42

Hmm. You are totally fucking unreasonable. Why does it HAVE to be the builder? Because they are builders? Because builders are usually 'working' class? Does this mean they steal? What about your teenage daughter, for example?

If they were a couple of middle class ladies catering for you at a dinner party, for example, would you be so quick to point the finger?

Just a thought.

OhMrsQ · 07/12/2016 01:44

And that post was not just for the OP, but all the posters deciding the builder nicked it

I think it probably got up and buggered off of it's own accord to be frank

😂

To be fair to the OP though. I've got stuff like that, that I bought pre buying the house & renovating it that I'm keeping in storage until the place is finished, else it's just more stuff in the way & getting dusty. There may well be candles in there. Fuck knows now.

KoalaDownUnder · 07/12/2016 02:24

. Why does it HAVE to be the builder? Because they are builders? Because builders are usually 'working' class?

Confused No, because they were the only other people in the house during the time period when the candle went missing.

maiacam · 07/12/2016 04:36

Ohmrsq and rwogunslingers this is not a recycled post as I said before why would I recycle this thread out of all the rather more riveting threads on mumsner that do not involve candles!

Also iits nothing to do with the fact it was a builder it's the fact that no one else other than me was in the house during this time! My teenage daughter was at school and sadly cannot time travel...

Perhaps said Builder thief was my DH?

He knows I'm a candle addict, especially Jo Malone Grin

unbelievably haunting and passionate unrequited love poem

I'm dying to know what you can write to get this accolade with magnetic letters !!!!!

This thread is weird. I think the OP is genuine and I'm annoyed that people think theft is funny.

So what if she what if she'd never used it. It's hers, she can do what she wants with it.

I'd be seriously pissed off if a cherished item of mine was taken and people thought it was funny.

I've had a workman steal something from my garden and it felt like a massive violation of trust. I didn't say anything because I couldn't prove it but I knew it was him.

maiacam · 07/12/2016 08:38

Thanks Capricorn76 for support
I am genuine :)
We had been between houses since 2009 so it had been hoarded for this reason.
Out of the two scenarios I am hoping it was knocked off by accident as I was a narrowish shelf and cleared up. It hasn't been up for that long as the house is only barely becoming livable!

Like you say it is impossible to prove and they are leaving soon so not long to go ...

OP posts:
Goingtobeawesome · 07/12/2016 08:48

You could ask. They might have an innocent explanation so you can stop stressing about it or else if they have nicked it, hopefully if they don't give it back, at least they might think twice before nicking the next persons belongings.

LetsGoFly · 07/12/2016 09:02

OP, maybe they're simply sprucing the candle up for you with tinsel and will tune it to say "I'm the happiest Christmas tree"

Who's with me? Anyone? No one?

curr78 · 07/12/2016 09:39

Will somebody pls just ask the builder, I can't take the suspense any longer !!! ,

hollyisalovelyname · 07/12/2016 10:37

If they are leaving soon then just before they go why not say that a candle is missing and you are put out about it. It was special, given to you by a special but now deceased friend. One of them should squirm.
But only if there is definitely no other explanation.

maiacam · 07/12/2016 11:03

The thought of doing nothing is more appealing to be honest
