AIBU?

Builder nicked my candle!

Hi I had a limited edition Jo Malone candle in my downstairs loo that had never been used and has been treasured since 2009.
We have builders working in the garden this week and have come in to use loo twice yesterday.
Noticed candle has disappeared and it was 100 percent there yesterday. Both builders are acting normal and friendly.
AIBU to feel rather miffed. Haven't said anything DH wants to but I am not so sure.

Help!

Have you paid them yet?
If not then just say you would like to know what happened the candle before settling the bill. Go as red as you like but just take it out of the bill if they won't be honest with you and I think you know now that they are responsible.

It doesn't really matter what it was or what it cost.

No not paid them yet but reluctant to deduct money as I didn't accuse them just asked if it had been accidentally broken.

To be honest its gone and I am not getting it back have ordered a new one (not JM ) and waiting for that to come.
Its huge so noone will be able to stick it up their jumper, down their trousers etc

I'm amazed that you can let it go. I'd want to sack them.

After reading this I thought 'sod it, life is short' and stuck the sticks in my Jo Malone diffuser I had been saving.

Your candle did not die in vain.

I've just lit my Diptyque candle I've had for a year.

I am pleased that other candles are being used I will be doing the same from now on.

Any wives and girlfriends of builders getting gifted a slightly dusty and smelling of wee fumes jo malone candle this xmas will surely be wondering Hmm

If it's only been your family and the builders in the house then I think one of builders nicked it to give to wife/ gf. I would mention it's not in its spot, they can't be that "nice" if they are willing to steal from a customer. I would deduct the value from the invoice. it's not just a candle they've been trusted in your home you will have been making them tea etc and you are the people paying their wages it's disgusting to steal from a customer. You have nothing to feel awkward about ask them or let your oh ask them.

Hi I did broach the subject with them this morning but it was denied which I guessed it would be.

I bet they nicked it to sell down the pub. Most people know they're expensive candles.

I wish (not really) I had CCTV in the loo to really see what happened to it!

Shocked at a candle costing so much

Yep, trust is gone. It must have been one of them or both and not because they are builders Hmm but because they were the only ones there. Did you tell them it couldnmt have been anyone else?

It just gets better...or worse. The young one looked a bit shifty so he must have risked losing his job for a dusty old candle that he just shoved down his pants and then proceeded to pee in the garden so as not to return to the scene of the crime...when really he should have gone there more often so there was a reasonable explaination for his prints being all over the place.Wink

You could try leaving a note where the candle was "my candle is missing.
Its worth £160 and i want to know what happened it. "

Ridiculous amount to pay for a candle, and I initially thought that this was not something to post about anywhere, but it's the not-knowing-yet-knowing that plays on your mind, then the wondering if you've lost yr marbles, then the insult of being lied to....I'd be doing my nut in the knowledge that I couldn't reliably prove what I knew! I sympathise with the situation completely (but not with what you spent on the candle, sorry!)

Thanks Sasha I wont be replacing it but it could have been anything that disappeared which would have the same effects you mentioned which are spot on.

The posters banging on about the cost of the candle are being a bit irrelevant really because it has nothing to do with the theft. The candle was stolen. Whether it cost £1 or £160, it's the same principle and attention shouldn't be diverted from that.

I do quite like the idea of either leaving a note or saying to them that the candle was expensive and I want to know what happened to it because there is no reason for it not to be in its place. Please explain... kind of thing.

WitchInTheWardrobe - exactly, I mean yes I did mention the cost, but you're right - had it been a stone off the beach I would have been as bewildered and cross as if it was something of value. It's the principle, you trust tradesmen, sorry, tradespeople, to be respectful of your house. It may just be their workplace that day, but it's your home!

The reason some of us mentioned the cost is that if it was a cheap bit of tat you could probably get over it - I agree 100% that theft is theft regardless of the price but you wouldn't loose any sleep over a few tea lights from ikea. I fucking would over a candle that cost £160.
