Builder nicked my candle!

Hi I had a limited edition Jo Malone candle in my downstairs loo that had never been used and has been treasured since 2009.
We have builders working in the garden this week and have come in to use loo twice yesterday.
Noticed candle has disappeared and it was 100 percent there yesterday. Both builders are acting normal and friendly.
AIBU to feel rather miffed. Haven't said anything DH wants to but I am not so sure.

Help!

Hi it was £42.00! That was an ebay listing price for a similar one

I would be annoyed too. It doesn't really matter what was stolen or how much it was worth. You should be able to trust other people not to take your belongings if you invite them into your home.

I hope you enjoy your new candle OP.

Thanks it came today and has been lit already - have learnt not to hoard if nothing else

£160 for a bit of wax with a wick down the middle and a bit of added perfume. I'm clearly missing something here. Though I do appreciated that as someone who can't stand perfumed candles I'm not the sort of person their product is aimed at. But even so.

Looked on their web page, they have candles for £290.

Might just as well take 6 £50 notes and set fire to them. Would be a lot quicker and you don't risk getting a headache from the smell.

Having said that OP. I'd be very tempted to deduct £160 from the builders payment. I trust you won't be using that particular builder again.

maiacam · 09/12/2016 18:50

Hi no won't be using this one again!

Thanks for this thread- genuine or not, it was bloody genius and cheered me up. Eagerly scanned each page to get the updates- riveting stuff!!

Wonder if the Daily Fail will get wind of this- the eventual lucky recipient of your candle will know who nicked when they hear about their treasured new gift's origins, methinks!

I'm picturing someone trying to smuggle a candle out of the house, let's say it's the junior guy, without letting the boss see it. Couldn't be easy.

Just curious, I don't have any Jo Malone candles, but would it still look and smell like new all these years on, if it is being wrapped up, as we speak, as a Christmas present?

maiacam · 10/12/2016 15:15

Hi definitely a genuine thread - I have not got an obsession with candles or have been somewhat preoccupied with them this week!
It looked new as it had been hoarded for 7 years and only in last few months removed from packaging (long story) but it did look new if it didn't smell new!
Did not have packaging on obviously :)
I don't know exactly what happened to it only that it disappeared into thin air or maybe spontaneously combusted without leaving a trace...

One of them probably did have it, the thing is are you going to be brace and ask them?

Beachhappy · 12/12/2016 11:41

Brave even?

Temporaryname137 · 12/12/2016 12:04

I would think breaking it and panicking is far more likely than stealing it. Sorry if that's been covered and breaking was physically impossible given location of sadly missed candle!

youngestisapsycho · 12/12/2016 12:11

I would have made it a lot clearer to them that you know it went missing when it was only you and them in the house. I would have also told them I was deducting £50 from their bill to pay for a replacement. It's pretty obvious one of them has taken or broken it! I would also tell them that I wouldn't be recommending their services to anyone.

maiacam · 12/12/2016 13:25

Hi I was brave to ask them but they denied it. They have left now and we have paid them :(

I still think breaking could have been the likely option as it was on a shelf and floor is tiled.

I still keep thinking that a new one is going to reappear on the doorstep (wishful thinking/deluded/not very likely!)

Only just got round to this and was wondering what was special about a candle so looked them up. FFS does any normal person pay that much for a flippin candle, madness!!
