As the title said, nanny came to work with a cold sore. She said she is careful so like an idiot I didn't question it. DD (3 yrs old) developed a fever, sore throat and now a huge cold sore. I am so angry and I'm kicking myself. DD will now have this for life.
Nanny says she is sorry.
What would you do?

No Summer. I was hysterical when he broke out in one and rushed him to the doctor. I know how dangerous they can be in babies and young children and was so upset, I was crying on and off for days.

You were right to be doomsday about it! Smile

He's 3 now and had another one try to rear it's ugly head about a year ago when he had a nasty cold.

Personally I would have sent the nanny home. Cold sores (herpes simplex virus) can be deadly in infants. If she came and told you upfront that she had a cold sore then I think the buck lies with you, for allowing her to come into close contact with your child.

I think UABU to be so angry with your nanny - also looks like nanny would have had to have quite a while off work to have avoided any chance of infecting your child. Also, to you and other critics of this nanny, I'm assuming you are all quite happy for your nannies to come into work when your children have infections, and be at risk of catching them. I'm a nanny, and have caught norovirus, headlice, and worms as well as nasty chest infections and various viruses and fevers from children I have worked with.

Gumgardener321 · 07/12/2016 08:36

I would have been annoyed as well. It such a difficult one esp if you are happy with her besides that sounds like it was an unfortunate mistake. Maybe direct her to nhschoice about cold sore so she's educated further, just incase she didn't realise.

I find this really unacceptable and the responses on this thread don't seem to take into account that If you are someone who has cold sores, you educate yourself on how not to give them to other people seeing as they are incredibly contagious.

My DH has both types of herpes and is obsessive about not giving them to me or the DC, and never has.

Sigh. Have you actually RTFT?

Just because you have not had cold sores, does not mean that DH has not passed the virus on. It just means you haven't had cold sores. You and your DC almost certainly do have HS1 so stop being so smug.

BITCAT · 07/12/2016 10:28

Even if the cold sores are not active it can still be passed on..and no symptoms does not mean you don't have it..I'd go get checked if I were you. So you don't ever kiss your partner or have sex..nor does he kiss your children. You probably have it.

BITCAT · 07/12/2016 10:37

It is easier to catch it if there are sores but can still be passed without.
