To wonder if people actually can eat a full takeaway?

I just got a Chinese takeaway for myself as its been a long week and DH is out for dinner tonight and I'm stuffed. There's two thirds of the rice left and half the pork dish. It's an obscene amount of food for one person. Does anyone ever actually manage the full portion sent and if not, why don't they just send a real sized portion or at least indicate how many portions are in each tub. I feel designated at how much I've had to throw in the bin. I wish I liked it the next day but never can face eating it in the cold light of day.

Leftover Chinese takeaway is the best! Can't believe you threw it away.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 25/11/2016 14:45

When I have either Chinese or Indian takeaway, I know I am going to get left with enough to do my lunch the next day. Some things aren't as nice, microwaved, but still nice enough.

So I agree that the portions are huge, but I see them as two meals, not one, and that makes it OK, in my book.

Candlestickchick · 25/11/2016 15:39

I'm clearly a greedy bitch then because I can easily manage the portions, and usually having scoffed a load of crisps first while waiting for it to arrive!

IHaveBrilloHair · 25/11/2016 16:04

We got this on Wednesday for two of us but that did two nights, we like to have different bits and share.

To wonder if people actually can eat a full takeaway?
Marmite17 · 25/11/2016 17:50

Cannot eat a whole takeaway, but sometimes reheat. They are usually double portions.

Madmama10 · 26/11/2016 14:41

I like the fact we don't eat it all. We usually heat up the leftovers the next day for lunch. I think Chinese and Indian takeaways are quite expensive compared to pizza, fish and chips etc. so I am glad we can get 2 meals out of one or we wouldn't be able to justify the expense.

SatsukiKusakabe · 26/11/2016 14:50

Well I feel like a proper piglet after reading this thread. We never have leftovers.

Chinese we order chow mien, rice, sweet and sour chicken in batter, some kind of vegetable dish (we're not animals) the children may have a small amount each, if it is just for us we don't bother with the rice. It's a lot but we eat it all.

Pizza, share a large, yep.

Indian, one main, shared rice, naan, yes eat it all with no problem.

We did start sharing a large cod and chips though as it was just too much potato.

We don't have it often though, so tend to just eat it and enjoy it when we do, I don't worry about the calories in a sitting as a one off every month or two, none of us have weight problems. I'm not much of a dessert eater though so will quite happily eat a lot of savoury stuff as I don't need room for sweet things.

KermitTheFudd · 26/11/2016 14:53

I'm the same, MadMama. I like the fact that there is always enough left to keep for lunch the next day.

The only thing I like to get as a small portion is fish and chips, because once the chips go cold they don't taste nice.

ShelaghTurner · 26/11/2016 15:00

Depends where we go. We tend to only get pizza or fish and chips as takeaway. We can put away a pizza each no problem. Fish and chips depends. Our nearest one has miniscule portions, it's ridiculous. Yet the one near my parents gave me enough chips for 3 and 3 huge pieces of fish for a large cod and chips. Me and my parents split it and all had piled up plates. And I'm no slouch, I didn't get to this size by nibbling and I love fish and chips!

MouseholeCat · 26/11/2016 15:05

DH can demolish 1.5 main dishes of Chinese or Indian. We do our own rice though as we prefer it, so probably eats less of that on balance. I can eat 2/3 of a standard Indian / Chinese takeaway portion.

I can easily eat an entire 12 inch pizza alone. I could also eat 2 Big Macs and still feel hungry.

Tbf though, we only have takeaway 2-3 times a year, if that. And it's always when we're ravenous. If we had it more often I wouldn't go all out like that!

Kitsa · 26/11/2016 15:08

I couldn' for sure with pork! as I only order vegetable dishes I usually can.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 26/11/2016 15:12

The thought of eating leftover takeaway makes me heave, and how people can eat it cold for breakfast..... urgh..... I don't think the food hygiene aspect is great, and I don't think it's a healthy habit to have. Just order less if there's too much to eat in one go.

Me and DS (13) get a starter each and share a main course and portion of rice. I sometimes get a naan too but can't eat it all and DS isn't keen on them. That's plenty of food, leaving us feel nicely satisfied rather than stuffed.

DH eats a starter, main and rice to himself. I think he likes to feel stuffed to the extent he feels a bit sick. Hmm

CurlyhairedAssassin · 26/11/2016 15:13

Sorry, I'm talking Indian or Chinese.

We are all much greedier with pizza.

Kitsa · 26/11/2016 15:26

Curlyhairedassassin, you're ruining the takeaway fun.
Nothing wrong with eating leftovers.

Autumnsweater · 26/11/2016 15:29

I have the rest for lunch heated up in the microwave the next day, or if away or something and can't do this then we share a main. Only a waste if you throw it away or order too much!

onecurrantbun1 · 26/11/2016 15:39

Our local takeaway do a 7" pizza, 7" garlic bread, a portion of chips and 2 cans of pop for £9.50. I usually eat about 1/3 of the meals and DH 2/3 so it's about the right size.

Chinese however we always mid judge - 2 mains, 1 rice and 1 chips and there's always some left over. However if we go for 1 large size main there isn't enough variety!

I absolutely adore having take away with my parents and brothers - usually 7 or 8 adults so 5 or 6 mains between us and everyone gets a bit of everything. My (very prim and proper) granny always asks to take the leftovers home. She has a very posh friend over for bible study on a Monday morning so they share the leftovers for brunch! Seems you're never too old, or posh, for a leftover brekkie!

PenguinsandPebbles · 26/11/2016 15:39

Never, but we order loads!! We all like different things and to pick at different bits, it's a real treat. Always leftovers in the morning.

I always order two of one particular starter, because some people who don't ever want this particular starter always seem to change their minds when it arrives Hmm and I love it.

So I order an extra one and hide it Grin and then eat all of them to myself in secret whilst i dish up or am in the car it makes them even better, plus I'm then seen as generous in allowing someone else to have the leftover two Halo of my favourite thing

purpleflower23 · 26/11/2016 16:05

Agreed. Always waaaay too much! Chinese and Indian DH and I order one main dish, one rice and maybe some samosas or mini spring rolls between us and it is plenty (we have big appetites too!). If we're going to the chippy, we share a small chips and a mini fish between us. Strangely we can eat a whole pizza each though...!

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 26/11/2016 16:07

Easily lasts me two meals, I generally order a starter portion and I'm fat

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 26/11/2016 16:15

This is like the mythical MN roast chicken threadsGrin

IHaveBrilloHair · 26/11/2016 16:34

I have ordered my takeaway for tonight, one chip and a piece of batter, I will save the leftovers for Christmas dinnerWink
(I love MN food threads)

ClashCityRocker · 26/11/2016 17:06

From an Indian me and dh will get two mains and share a rice and naan, maybe a starter as a side dish. We'll get lunch out of it the next day.

Similar for Chinese.

Fish and chips is two fish and one chips. Chippy chips and fish are crap reheated though so any leftovers go in the bin.

I could eat a pizza the size of the moon though. Although I have reluctantly come to accept, due to my burgeoning waistline, that a small dominos is more sensible and doesn't leave me overstuffed.

Dominos is stupid though because it's actually cheaper to buy more. Eg it's 50% of over 50 where I am currently. Now, me and dh could happily order £25 worth of food (coz they're so fucking expensive)...but we can effectively order another £25 free. They are such a rip off when buying for one person.

itsmeagain1 · 26/11/2016 17:12

I don't think we've ever not had leftovers after a Chinese, Thai or Indian takeaway.
We usually get two or three starters, one main, one rice between two and still have leftovers for the next day.
Indian often tastes better the next day.

Maybebabybee · 26/11/2016 17:15

Christ yes, easily. My appetite is massive.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 26/11/2016 17:23

Nope, I cant. If I tried my IBS would kick off and torture me for the next week.
