To wonder if people actually can eat a full takeaway?

I just got a Chinese takeaway for myself as its been a long week and DH is out for dinner tonight and I'm stuffed. There's two thirds of the rice left and half the pork dish. It's an obscene amount of food for one person. Does anyone ever actually manage the full portion sent and if not, why don't they just send a real sized portion or at least indicate how many portions are in each tub. I feel designated at how much I've had to throw in the bin. I wish I liked it the next day but never can face eating it in the cold light of day.

IcedVanillaLatte, Alots are also known for snaffling people's takeaways from the kitchen when they're not looking. So never leave a pizza or a bag of food unattended.

WorraLiberty · 19/11/2016 22:59

No, all the takeaways around here sell ridiculously large portions as standard. I think because there are so many of them and they're all trying to outdo each other.

Even a 'small' portion of chips from the local chippy (£1.40) is massive, so me and DH will share a 'small' chips and a large cod.

Chinese, between 2 adults and 2 teens, we'll order 1 rice, 2 noodles, 2 main dishes and there'll still be a bit left over for the teenagers to reheat the next day.

hoddtastic · 19/11/2016 23:01

three adults, 4 kids (age 6-9) just had a chinese take out for tea, we had- 2 x chicken fried rice, a chips, a special chow mein, a salt and pepper chicken and a chicken satay. They gave us a free salt and pepper wings. We've binned about one plate full / meal for another adult. I never want to eat the same meal, repeatedly.

Eevee77 · 19/11/2016 23:02

I can eat a whole pizza no problem.
But curry, no. At our local takeaways the portions are huge. Me and Oh can split one portion of rice/curry/naan & sometimes some Bombay potatoes 50/50 and I'll be stuffed.

BlackNo1 · 19/11/2016 23:05

Pizza yes, Indian curries yes, fish & chips no (I always end up leaving chips) and Chinese is the same as I can't eat all the rice.

bumbley children are 2 and 6. They both love fish and chips and the 2yo can eat as much as me Shock

The fish portion is as long and thick as my forearm (am 5'8"). The batter tastes lovely but makes you feel gross for days after eating it Grin Maybe a heavy batter has something to do with feeling full?

Honestly like the OP I often wonder who on earth these portions are meant for!

WorraLiberty · 19/11/2016 23:15

A medium deep pan pizza (8 slices) is too much for me, as I can only manage 5 slices and then I'm uncomfortably stuffed.

The trouble is, they won't deliver a small pizza (6 slices) and we don't drive.

However, this works totally to my advantage because it leaves me 3 slices of mine to re-heat the next day, and DH always leaves at least 2 which he donates to me, as he doesn't like cold or re-heated pizza.

Win-win for Worra Grin

OhtoblazeswithElvira · 19/11/2016 23:18

Sorry forgot to say - the chips container is same length as the fish and about 2 inches deep, not sure if that's standard?

maninawomansworld01 · 19/11/2016 23:19

Love a takeaway curry!
Main, rice, bahjees, bread, sag paneer and poppadums all to myself.

Yum! Might have one tomorrow as a treat.

user1472419718 · 19/11/2016 23:29

Chinese takeaway I plan to last 2 meals, only eat half and put half in the fridge for tomorrow. Sometimes the same with pizza depending on the size, although often I'll end up having a sneaky extra slice or two and just have the remainder (1/4-1/3) for breakfast. Fish and chips I wont keep leftovers (not so nice the next day) but can usually eat 2/3-3/4 of it.

FeelingSmurfy · 25/11/2016 12:17

I was always shocked at these threads, until our chippy got new management

I asked for a regular chips and she checked if I wanted to upgrade to large, I said no and then watched as she piled them up, and up, and up. I reminded her it was just a regular portion and she nodded and added more. It was like the MN chicken, that 1 portion of chips could have fed a family of four for a week!* it was at least 4 times the portion I was expecting

I knew that different places would vary but not that much

*maybe a slight exaggeration, but only slight!

YelloDraw · 25/11/2016 12:20

Yes. I'm confident many people could eat one dish and one rice. My husband for one.

Same.

I can eat all of the main dish and 1/2 rice if I am hungry.

ShowMePotatoSalad · 25/11/2016 12:22

T'other night we had prawn toast, 1/4 crispy duck and prawn crackers to share, then i had half of my chicken satay and rice and heated the remaining up next day for lunch. I can eat half a large dominoes and eat the rest the next day.

catastropheinprocess · 25/11/2016 12:48

I love a wagamamas take out to myself!

giraffesCantReachTheirToes · 25/11/2016 13:06

I get a small rice and some spare ribs and it lasts me 4 months. I eat 5.5 grains a day and have a chew on the bone. That's when I am really hungry.

rollinghedgehog · 25/11/2016 13:12

I am always wary re-heating a tub of rice (it needs to be piping hot or there are nasty bug risks) but it makes amazing egg fried rice the next day. My leftover rice (DP goes for noodles) does a meal for two if I through in some frozen veg and prawns.

lastqueenofscotland · 25/11/2016 13:17

God yes, easily, with sides. And I'm fairly slim! (Bmi of 20) but I have one once a month

TheWildRumpyPumpus · 25/11/2016 13:23

I'm trying to imagine DH'a face if I suggested we shared a main, side and naan between 4 of us tomorrow GrinShockSadAngry

Oh, really Hmm.

The takeaways we are served sell truely enormous piles of food, obscenley so. Even my well built manual worker DP cannot eat a whole Chinese meal (main and rice), fish and chips or full large pizza without being uncomfortably stuffed, so it's not like I'm eating like a bird if I only eat half the meal.

And I don't think eating until you are well stuffed is particularly 'a treat' I'd much rather eat half the meal, be quite full and have the other half the next day. Even then, it's probably a lot of calories per meal for an average woman. A large Domino's pizza is about 1500-2000 calories, so almost a whole day's worth of calories for a woman, so half of one is probably about right for one meal.

Of course all the people on here are slim and still eat entire takeaways to themselves, but out in the real world there are quite a lot of people who definitely could do with cutting their portion sizes down just a little bit.

(Oh, and when I was talking about meze earlier in the thread, it was in restaurants, not family gatherings. You ask for the mixed meze for 2 and they genuinely bring enough food for about six people.

Tinkerbubbletrouble · 25/11/2016 14:08

Nowadays no. But at uni I regularly used to get a thai takeaway all to myself. Think spring rolls, thai beef salad, garlic chicken and egg fried noodles. It all went, and I was a size 8! Blush

idontlikealdi · 25/11/2016 14:18

This thread has made me laugh!

I guess a lot depends on the size portion the take away actually does but:

Curry - main each, one rice between two and a couple of sides, usually some leftovers

Chinese - normally order four or five dishes plus a noodle or rice, always leftovers but like to have bits of different things instead of just one main

Fish and chips - DH has fish, I have sausage and we share a large chips as the large chips is truly massive from mine

Pizza - we used to share a large years ago but never get it any more as I just don't like it any more but if we get a shop bought one we would have one each for dinner

One fish and one chips for four is a bit like the magic mumsnet chicken isn't it?

Titsalinabumsquash · 25/11/2016 14:21

I can eat a whole pizza over an evening but curry or Chinese we always have some left for breakfast

alicedrablow · 25/11/2016 14:29

I can, and used to, trough my way through a main and half a rice. however, I now force myself to save half for the next day. I don't NEED all those calories in one sitting.
