To wonder if people actually can eat a full takeaway?

I just got a Chinese takeaway for myself as its been a long week and DH is out for dinner tonight and I'm stuffed. There's two thirds of the rice left and half the pork dish. It's an obscene amount of food for one person. Does anyone ever actually manage the full portion sent and if not, why don't they just send a real sized portion or at least indicate how many portions are in each tub. I feel designated at how much I've had to throw in the bin. I wish I liked it the next day but never can face eating it in the cold light of day.

Oh Blush so if I tip half onto my plate, put it straight in fridge before it cools down ? Then nuke next day ? Eyes opened ! Must have a cast iron stomach

BarbaraofSeville · 19/11/2016 20:41

I don't understand this rice food poisoning thing. I don't always put things in the fridge, I'm not particularly thorough with reheating, I've done it at least weekly for decades and this mythical food poisoning, which people seem to claim is guaranteed to happen, never has Confused.

DanceTheBlues · 19/11/2016 20:42

Why would you throw the rest away?! We order a takeaway (curry or chinese) knowing full well it'll be dinner or tea the day after.

I honestly wonder how my local chinese takeaway makes any money, the amount of food they send out.

Cary2012 · 19/11/2016 20:45

We only have Dominoes on a Tuesday as a treat because it's two for one. A large pizza does me dinner on the Tuesday, and lunches on the Wed and Thurs! It microwaves really well, DS can wolf down a large stuffed crust and it doesn't touch the sides.

I love Chinese but always wake up really thirsty in the middle of the night after it, Indian is my fave, King Prawn Vindaloo, Mushroom rice and kulcha naan everytime, and Sag Aloo if really hungry.

NicknameUsed · 19/11/2016 20:45

"A takeaway isn't a set amount of food Confused"

Yes it is Eolian. They have standard portion sizes in most Chinese and Indian takeaways. It isn't like going into a canteen and asking them to hold back on the rice. Do you never eat takeaways? Pizzas are different because they come in different sizes.

"Surely you order roughly the right amount for your appetite?"

Not usually. You can't order in different portion sizes from the Chinese. Our local Indian will do half portions though.

"Is this some kind of tiny appetite stealth boast thread or do you all live somewhere with portions twice the size they are round my way?"

IcedVanillaLatte Nope. The portions are Barnsley sized Grin

OH and I will share a large Dominos BTW.

trixymalixy · 19/11/2016 20:46

DH and I normally share the set menu for 1 person and have leftovers.

HateMrTumble · 19/11/2016 20:49

Yep, on my fourth this week. Prepping my winter bodGrin

GabsAlot · 19/11/2016 20:50

i do it in two sittings which people find gross as its cold by then

PerspicaciaTick · 19/11/2016 20:50

You only have to look at the variety of takeaway containers available for wholesalers to buy to realise that there will be lots of different portion sizes.

Where we used to live, Chinese food came in small, flatter plastic pots. Now they come in somewhat deeper, small foil pots. The Indian food comes in larger, longer foil pots. All different dimensions. Its one of the things which make choosing a new take away a risky decision.

Cocklodger · 19/11/2016 20:52

Its hard to use dominos voucher codes tbh,
They're not valid on some sides, some drinks, some desserts etc. I'd rather pay full price and have what I like for the sake of a fiver off.
That being said since having my PFB 2wks ago I have spent over 350 quid on dominos, probably should be using vouchers Blush

Ta1kinpeece · 19/11/2016 20:52

I used to not worry too much about the rice thing
UNTIL
I was sick as a dog for 2 days after snacking on left over curry rice

I try to order the right amount but if there is too much then the rice is the one thing I never keep

but it does not go in the bin - EVER - as I have a hot composter that takes every last bit of food waste. It then goes onto the veg garden the next year

bumbleymummy · 19/11/2016 20:54

ohtoblazes how old are your children? I can't imagine splitting one portion of fish and chips between 4. I know what you mean about there always being a lot of chips but one fish between 4 would mean very little fish each surely?

SusanneLinder · 19/11/2016 20:56

I can. But I love Chinese food, plus am greedy.

Puddington · 19/11/2016 20:56

I can usually eat a full portion of chips and gravy from the chippie Grin When we order a Chinese though I can usually only manage half or maybe three-quarters of it, but my DP will unfailingly eat all our leftovers the next day anyway!

CocktailQueen · 19/11/2016 21:02

I only ever go for a dominos now, costs me 28-32 quid for a large pizza, drink, ice cream and a side

Wtf???? You can get a yummy pizza from Tesco for £4. I cannot understand why anyone would pay so much for a pizza!

SaucyJack · 19/11/2016 21:04

Say whatever else you like about me, but I'm not a quitter where food is concerned.

IcedVanillaLatte · 19/11/2016 21:04

Ah. Barnsley. That explains it Grin

(I grew up ten miles away from Barnsley…)

Ginmakesitallok · 19/11/2016 21:04

Thank you soooo much op! You reminded me I had half of last night's curry in the fridge- fab supper. X

Horsegirl1 · 19/11/2016 21:04

No way. Me and dh get one rice and one meal (chicken in oyster sauce ) and go half's. No crackers or starters etc and w never finish our half portion. It's a massive amount and iv no node how people eat a full one plus sides and starters etc.

Pinkheart5915 · 19/11/2016 21:07

It depends on the take away

Fish and chips, I can eat medium fish, small chips and mushy peas

Indian meal, a curry dish, 1/2 a rice with DH and 1/2 a cheese bread. There is never any Indian left

Chinese 1/2 a veg chow mein with DH, 5 sweet and four chicken balls and 1/2 a chicken with cashews. The Chinese here delivers massive portions so we freeze what is left

Thai I would have a curry dish, 1/2 a rice with DH and some dumplings. Again we freeze any left over Thai

Pizza, the only delivery here for pizza is from the Italian restaurant and I can eat a whole medium thin crust one with salad

Cocklodger · 19/11/2016 21:07

CocktailQueen Not really a treat If I've got to go to the nearest town to get the pizza, is it??
ATM though I have a 2wk old DD, No family or friends for over 30 miles none of which drive, No partner and my husband is an ex/soon to be, so I'm living on dominos until I can manage to safely cook a nutritious meal

GrabtharsHammer · 19/11/2016 21:10

Cocklodger, do you have a Cook shop near you? Could you send a friend

TempApocalypse · 19/11/2016 21:10

I'll eat half my curry, a quarter of a pilau rice, quarter of a naan, bit of daal and some poppadom, with one of the little mint yoghurt tubs. Then I'll have exactly the same for breakfast the next morning! DH will have a curry to himself, half a rice and naan and poppadom. He regularly forgets about the daal Shock
Sadly this thread, like all mumsnet threads that mention food will become a 'I have 8 grains of rice and half a sliver of chicken and I'm stuffed' competition.

GrabtharsHammer · 19/11/2016 21:11

Oh god j hate this phone.

Send a friend on a mercy dash to fill your freezer up with Cook ready meals? You'd save yourself a fortune and they're much better for you. I imagine dominos gets a bit soul destroying after a while.

TooMinty · 19/11/2016 21:11

I can manage a whole fish supper, but I usually regret it after. Other stuff we share a portion - DH and I shared starter, main and chapati last night from local curry house
