I called to check he'd posted some of dds clothes I ebayd on the way to work yesterday, which he did and he texted 'the postage is £2.85'. I didn't reply but when he's left the post office recipt carefully placed on my bedside table before he went to work! It's not as if I'm spending the sale on myself. It'll go on more clothes for dd.

Would I be unreasonable to find the grubby old tin full of pennies we take on holiday for the arcade games and leave £2.85 exactly in pennies on his bedside table?

Presumably you've included a postage cost in the eBay listing? Has the money gone into your account through PayPal? That is where the postage cost should be coming from. If not, then take it out of the profits of selling the clothes? The way he went about it was a bit PA but I really don't think he should be expected to just pay it.

For me, the amount would be either repayable or not depending on how family finances were structured. If it were repayable, I'd ask for it regardless of whether it was 1p or 1000 pounds. And if not, not.

It would hurt my brain (make life more complicated) if I had to have an extra rule that said "in special cases where expenditure on category Y is less than £X, do not follow the usual rules, because you will be called a tight fuck-nugget." And I would be stressed trying to guess what £X was, as asking would mark me out as a fuck-nugget, and possibly there would additional anxiety wondering if there were different cut-offs for different categories of expenditure.

However I have complete accounts of all my expenditure (in about 20 categories) that go back to 1st of January 1995, so it's possible I don't think the same way as other people.

Whereas I find that level of separatism between couples terrifying!

My husband would do the same, not expecting to be reimbursed, but just so I knew how much it cost, and had the receipt so that I knew where it was if I needed to track the parcel/claim with Royal Mail if it went missing etc.

I'd just say, "Oh that's cheaper than I thought" and leave it at that. You have serious problems if your husband thinks the postage for your children's clothes should come purely out of your money.
