I think it's a form of Stockholm Syndrome Wink

But no- a minority of minorities may have voted with him - but the election was won by the angry white blue collar vote. Ohio, Wisconsin, Michigan - the rust belt. Particularly, but not exclusively (obviously) male.

The shock to everyone else is palpable.

birdybirdywoofwoof · 09/11/2016 20:33

Ok- let's pretend it was poverty that made people vote trump. That the poorest Americans elected him.

(Dunno where you're getting your information from - but this seems to be the the most palatable narrative now)

mathanxiety · 09/11/2016 20:35

And this was not an election won because droves of hicks came down out of the hills with straw between their tobacco stained teeth, with their votes canceling out the votes of the sensible, engaged, literate Americans who live in the current century.

This was an election won by means of the Electoral College, which is a very troubling quirk of the American election process in which the votes of citizens in certain states outweigh the votes of citizens in less populous ones and if the state goes for a certain candidate by the squeakiest of majorities, all the Electoral College votes of that state are bestowed on the winning candidate.

Hillary Clinton won the popular vote. The Clinton campaign made some major miscalculations when wrt states to target.

Hayles88 · 09/11/2016 20:47

I would honestly hate to be one of his bodyguards/family members right now. There's already count down to assassination clocks and petitions. Disgusting but happening. America made a massive fuck up, Clinton was the best of an awful choice. He is a joke and any woman who voted him in should be ashamed. What an awful day, a reality TV star who can't even blend his own foundation as the POTUS, he can't control his temper on twitter!

Theaspizzashop · 09/11/2016 21:05

"Rich people have used Cultural Marxism to silence debate, to further their financial gains."

Or maybe nice and intelligent people have promoted a culture where it is unacceptable to discriminate against people based on the sex, ethnicity or sexual orientation for humanitarian reasons???? Because they care for people and hate the thought of people being belittled and bullied based on such factors? user1471439240 are you someone who shudders at the thought of 'multiculturalism' hmm?

allyjay · 09/11/2016 21:22

This thread is hilarious. All the outraged people posting about the poor, disenfranchised, overlooked, erm....middle aged, middle class, white men who voted for Trump. They just wanted change don't you know? A revolution! Independence day! Poor, brave, wee souls fighting those nasty elites and the establishment bullies.

Actually do they fuck, they just want a return to the status quo where they're on top again and women and minorities are thrown under a bus. Just like the Brexiters. But it makes them more comfortable to think of themselves as revolutionaries, freedom fighters don't it? Sits better with them. Doesn't mean it's true though.

Suziewuzie28 · 09/11/2016 21:26

I'm a liberal, Female, immigrant, atheist and I voted for Trump.
It doesn't make me a bad person. There's been some pretty shocking propaganda against Trump in the UK and the people of America saw right through it. She's become he president for a reason, and that reason is because he's competent.

Suziewuzie28 · 09/11/2016 21:27

He's not she's!

Backingvocals · 09/11/2016 21:28

The only propaganda I've seen about Trump is his own. He told us exactly who he was.

Birdandsparrow · 09/11/2016 21:30

Competent.

ha ha ha ah ah aha ha ha ha ah aha ha ha ha ha.
The man who has lost billions. The man who can barely string a sentence together.

Marynary · 09/11/2016 21:35

Competent at what?

noeffingidea · 09/11/2016 21:37

Competent at what, susie? He hasn't even done anything yet. The man is a total buffoon.
I don't understand the American system where literally anyone can become President, one of the most complex and demanding jobs in the world. Yet someone with no experience whatsoever can step right up and millions of people somehow think this is a good idea.

roundaboutthetown · 09/11/2016 21:43

Middle class, middle aged white men have been overlooked, allyjay and were far more likely to feel the consequences of opportunities being taken away than people who had never been given any in the first place. Besides, who do you think organises revolutions? Lenin and Trotsky were both middle class, white men. It really is silly to argue that extending the ranks of the disenfranchised to those who think they might be able to do something about it and are feeling bitter and destructive is not something the elite should be blamed for. Allow colossal inequalities to build up and stick your fat snout in the trough yourself and what do you expect? Revolutions do not normally start until it's more than just the poorest who think they are suffering.

Hayles88 · 09/11/2016 21:43

Competent at feeling "pussy" he has no right to feel? Competent at sexually violating women as we are a lesser human race? Competent at hating minorities? Oh well done you! Competent at what, what is he actually capable of? Tax dodging yes. Thats it. Being a misogynistic, racisit, homophobic prick, yes. It shocks me that people, even more so women can support him. Do you agree with his opinion of women? Do you have no respect for yourself/your daughters?

Hayles88 · 09/11/2016 21:46

But yeah as per his "speech" this morning proves "He'll make America great all the people he knows are really great people, bobs a great people, freds a great people, his parents are great peoples, his sons a great people".

gettingtherequickly · 09/11/2016 21:48

He is not competent, he bankrupts companies. He'll do the same to the US, he's already talking about increasing the deficit.

I'm sure you know that ultimately that makes the country bankrupt, when you can't pay the interest on your debts.

It's why many of his companies go bust.

Why anyone voted for him, when he clearly stated who his is, is totally beyond me. It's like you bought into "make America great". By all stats, America is great, low unemployment, starting to look after the welfare of poorer people, low interest rates, easy borrowing.

What did you want to change? How do you think he'll change it. (Clearly no wall is being built).

TheWoodlander · 09/11/2016 21:50

Actually do they fuck, they just want a return to the status quo where they're on top again and women and minorities are thrown under a bus. Just like the Brexiters. But it makes them more comfortable to think of themselves as revolutionaries, freedom fighters don't it? Sits better with them. Doesn't mean it's true though.

Yes! Stupid white men, mainly. They want "their country" back Hmm It's not revolutionary at all. It's just stupid.

Having checked out the #DrainTheSwamp twitter feed, I'm now unsurprised at the results.

I'm now taking a gin & tonic to bed. Perhaps it will all turn out to be a dream.

Hayles88 · 09/11/2016 21:51

getting i bet they'll build their own wall to get away from the orange bastard

justwanttoweeinpeace · 09/11/2016 21:52

It'll be interesting to see what happens when it dawns on everyone that tech is taking the jobs, much more so than immigrants.

Will he be proposing to build a wall around Silicon Valley and promising to turn the wifi off at ten o clock every night? Hmm

roundaboutthetown · 09/11/2016 22:03

No, obviously he will continue to feed the elite, as he's one of them. He's just the start of things getting worse and worse for almost everyone.

AccioMerlot · 09/11/2016 22:03

Can I just... "He took a bullet proof vest with him"

Yeah. I've done canvassing and GOTV in the UK and it was hostile enough; if I was canvassing in the US where my opponents were using 'Kill The Bitch' as a campaign slogan and had guns, yes, sure as hell I'd be bringing a bullet-proof jacket. Cause I have kids and a husband and stuff.

GinAndTunic · 09/11/2016 22:05

It is not a "troubling quirk". It is a traditional and well-established element of the US voting system, which is why candidates concentrate on campaigning in key states. It's not as though it's a new invention or Clinton and her campaign manager wasn't aware of how the Electoral College works.

GinAndTunic · 09/11/2016 22:06

or that Clinton and her campaign manager weren't aware

AutumnLeavesAgain · 09/11/2016 22:09

She shoudda gone to Wisconsin..

GinAndTunic · 09/11/2016 22:10

the elite, as he's one of them

Clinton is about as elite and establishment as they come. Which is why she was rejected by those she sneered at as being "deplorables". If she had stopped looking down at her nose at them and listened to their concerns she might have won the election.
