Whilst I'm sure Leavers will undoubtedly think AIBU the last thread filled up so here's another 1000 opportunities to discuss what you think about where Brexit is heading.

"times are changing & people aren't bothered about 'facts' so much. Because 'facts' are always biased & open to interpretation."

I think I might have to shoot myself. Oh, actually, I won!t have to. All I'll have to do is get in a plane or a car designed by one of the new people who aren't bothered about facts do much.............

twofingerstoGideon · 31/10/2016 07:06

Because 'facts' are always biased & open to interpretation.
I think surfer is mistaking 'facts' for 'opinions'.
I don't think the fact that we need oxygen to breathe can be biased or open to interpretation, for example.
Oh Brave New World that does not 'bother' about facts.

twofingerstoGideon · 31/10/2016 07:07

(Surfer - Brave New World is the name of a novel by Aldous Huxley. This is also a fact.)

TheElementsSong · 31/10/2016 07:31

It's only in the Brexit debates that I've seen 'facts' used as an insult Confused (extra points for "well researched 'facts'").

surferjet · 31/10/2016 07:33

*feelings politics' is a term I heard used by a politician shortly after the ref result. He said pretty much what I said ( apart from the religion bit ) so I haven't just made it up. The remain campaign focused mainly on the economy & what would happen to that if we voted leave. 17 million people took no notice.
& regarding religion/ cults, I was actually referring more to the remainers I've come across online. Tell me honestly, no matter what gets said or by whom, that you'd change your opinion & think 'yeah, actually, it is good that we're leaving'
That will never happen & you know it. So yes, it's cultish.

RufusTheSpartacusReindeer · 31/10/2016 07:43

o brave new world That has such people in't!

Bit of shakespeare for you Smile

TheForeignOffice · 31/10/2016 07:46

BertrandRussell

"times are changing & people aren't bothered about 'facts' so much. Because 'facts' are always biased & open to interpretation."

I think I might have to shoot myself.

Hahahaha...not RTFT but whoever thinks people aren't so bothered by "facts" is about to find out that consequences are also "factual"... inflation, interest rates, employment data and capital outflows are all directly measurable, not just forex.

But if opinions pieces are preferable, there are surely enough articles in credible international newspapers to verify exactly how the rest of the world sees the UK's undemocratic government, it's xenophobic nature and hilariously unprofessional ministerial interface with the rest of the world .... a grotesque departure from so-called "British Values".

It's extremely sad, but countries' international standing changes over time. Look to Turkey to see how throwing away economic and political stability in favour of uneducated populism and right wing non-democracy and vilifying dissidents works out, although at least they exhibit more humanity regarding refugees! (and no, they were never joining the EU before that bs gets peddled out again.)

Facts are only unimportant in an uneducated society who have had democratic involvement removed from them.

BertrandRussell · 31/10/2016 07:47

I don't think for a minute that you made it up, surfer.

"Fact" and "expert" have become insults. And that is fucking terrifying.

surferjet · 31/10/2016 07:52

Agree BertrandRussell - people are turned off by 'experts' these days & vote with their heart, there's not a lot you can do about that.

BertrandRussell · 31/10/2016 08:03

Hearts are good at pumping blood.
Guts are excellent at processing food.

Why the fuck would you use either of them to make serious political decisions when your body has a specialist thinking organ ideal for the job?

MagikarpetRide · 31/10/2016 08:04

The request for facts isn't cultish though, its science and reasoned thinking and a want to learn and grow.

The hallelujah and 'it'll all be glorious' with no basis except for feelings is far more in line with any cult.

BertrandRussell · 31/10/2016 08:11

EXactly. I may be wrong about Brexit. But I can say that I voted based on my best interpretation of the facts and the evidence available to me. And based on the advice of people who know more about this stuff than I do because they have studied it and experienced it in a way that I haven't.

surferjet · 31/10/2016 08:13

Leavers did vote on facts & statistics, they just didn't get bogged down with all the doom & gloom about the economy.
That's all the remain campaign focused on.

TheForeignOffice · 31/10/2016 08:17

Interesting opinion piece from the South China Morning Post on the "new" post-factual UK. Unfortunately it's pretty representative of the entire world...WARNING: facts contained within.

MagikarpetRide · 31/10/2016 08:21

Again with the hypocrisy - you aren't allowed to conflate the Brexit campaign and their lies and xenophobia with Brexit voters, because it isn't representative but you are apparently allowed to conflate remain voters with the remain campaign.

surferjet · 31/10/2016 08:25

The South China Morning post?

Who the hell reads that in the UK?

Peregrina · 31/10/2016 08:30

It doesn't matter who reads the South China Morning post in the UK. What matters is that it's something the Chinese government could be reading, and they won't get a flattering picture of us. We are relying on trade deals with them to save us, remember?

surferjet · 31/10/2016 09:00

America have owned us since 1945, doesn't mean I read the Washington Post every day.

Anyway, off to work, catch you for a drink later in the Brexit Arms.
It's your round.

MagikarpetRide · 31/10/2016 09:03
  • We've become the laughing stock of the world
  • No we haven't
  • Here's the sort of stuff the world are saying about us
  • Well who reads it here???
MissHooliesCardigan · 31/10/2016 09:04

People are entitled to their own opinions but not to their own facts. In my opinion, the earth is flat and the moon is made of cheese.

Bearbehind · 31/10/2016 09:08

A cult - seriously?

We're getting into shallow waters here.. some people need to start listening with

Yes, a cult, ww. Even surfer has described it as such.

Re the 'shallow waters' comment, that's a bit rich after your complete refusal yesterday to play the game and answer questions in the order they were posed - that's about as shallow as it gets.

Finally, how do you 'listen with your ears' on an Internet forum? Hmm

OP posts:
Bearbehind · 31/10/2016 09:13

I can't open that South China piece, could someone copy and paste it please.

OP posts:
Bearbehind · 31/10/2016 09:15

I find it truly terrifying that surfer is almost proud that her vote was nothing to with facts.

I wonder how many others actually think that way too.

It's not something many people would actually admit to but I suspect it's quite widespread.

OP posts:
ToastDemon · 31/10/2016 09:40

And as to facts being so last decade... I don't know whether to laugh or cry.
Every bit of technology, medical care, the very world around us is because people took the time to establish facts, and people became experts in the disciplines pertaining to these facts.
If that's the level of thinking around Brexit then we're utterly fucked.
