for background my friend and I both smoked, I gave up five years ago my friend 2 years ago but vapes instead.
She is now staying with me so I have been with her 24/7 for the last couple of weeks.
we dont work so atm spend all day together.
she vapes constantly, is always clutching it and blowing vape smoke over me, food, in my face constantly.
I HATE the smell, sickly sweet, it has made my house smell differently. I have hinted that I dont like it but she says its not smoking, harmless etc
I want her to leave I just cant stand it any longer.
not sure if it is a coincidence but I have a headache every day- does it cause headaches in other people.
Dont want to fall out with her over it but if she was smoking she wouldnt do it constantly in my home.

And yes, mine smells vaguely. If I walk out a room I've vaped in and go back in I can smell it a bit
Colleagues say it smells of jam and biscuits so they don't mind Grin

Vaping reeks. I feel so sorry for you OP. You need to tell her, politely but firmly, that your house is 'no smoking or vaping' and she needs to do it outside.

DH and I have a no cooking kippers rule. Your house, your rules.

My ex MIL started smoking a few years ago, but before that she lived in a house with four other smokers. She denies the existence of smoke smell. She washes my son's clothes before sending them home with him but they absolutely reek and I have to wash them again. She utterly refuses to accept that they smell of smoke, and thinks I'm just being a bitch for no reason.

"Vapers" are like that. It DOES stink. Really, it does.

I can definitely smell most of them. It needs to be treated like making indoors tbh, filling the room with vapour is very antisocial.

It isn't like smoking - it's much better (no, not perfect but better than inhaling carcinogens) and good on your friend.

But I tried it and loathed the sickly sweet flavours (like a can of red bull - ugh) and you can smell it. It's like an air freshener.

Tell her you're really pleased she's stopped smoking but hate the smell of gaping so can she go outside to do it. I wouldn't expect someone to come and spray a horrible chemical air freshener round my house and it's a similar thing (say that if you need to be really blunt). YANBU

YANBU - i think it's as disgusting a habit as smoking tbh. It makes me really cross when people are doing it by you - no one knows what the effects of them are.

The answer was given up thread.

No one's skin is that thick.

Add in 'That's you that is' liberally if you insist.

Being around someone vaping triggers the most awful migraines in me. Some scents (I don't know the name for them) seem to have quite a heady, perfume to them and make me throw up and then burrow in a dark room for 2-3 days. She is inconsiderate and rude.

I know how hard it is to deal with thick skinned type people but you have to be blunt, no hinting. "I'm going to have to be blunt but you can't vape in my home anymore. I love you but this is too much for me and I cannot tolerate it anymore. It's fine if you want to do it in the garden but I cannot agree to living around these smells anymore and I won't enter into a discussion about it."

What is the Dom Jolly reference please?

Oh god your friend is being completely unreasonable, and I say that as someone sat here puffing on a wismec rx200 with a mad hatter! But that's in MY home. No way would I just rock up at someone's house and blow vape everywhere! Kick her out!

It's a lot more pleasant than smoke but it is does often smell like someone's walking around with a Yankee Candle.

Downright rude of her to carry on doing it - in YOUR house - when you've made it clear that you'd rather she didn't. I'm afraid you'll have to be firmer with her.
My DS does it in his bedroom when he comes home to visit. The smell is vomitious.
I think vapers probably get used to the smell, so don't notice it; much like dog owners don't realise that their house smells like dog. Dog owning is far healthier than vaping though.

Galaxy - public health England released a statement, it's 95% safer than smoking
Research has been done into the effects of vaping for a while now

Your house your rules. She is being a selfish, pia who doesnt even realise that vaping isnt 100% proven safe. Its not up to her whether she vapes in your house or not. Many places dont allow it as the 'smoke' sticks to the walls, clothes, food etc just like tobacco smoke.

I have friends who vape and they always go outside its never been even mentioned they just do as there isnt a lot of research to say that there are NO side effects.

Tell her to get outside or you will shove it where the sun dont shine and she can vape like that Smile

I think a lot depends on the flavour they use. I find that menthol is fine, but the fruity ones really stink, they are sickly and horrible.

Report
Serialweightwatcher · 24/10/2016 19:52

I'd just say whether it's causing anything or not, I don't like it and I'd rather you did it outside if you don't mind.

Report
Serialweightwatcher · 24/10/2016 19:52

..... and if you do mind, tough shit - do it outside or don't do it at all!

Just been on holiday with someone who vaped constantly - even when people were eating. It stank - a horrid sickly disgusting smell. Even when we pointed it out and asked her not too she would just say it smelled like candy floss and was nice ......

I feel your pain OP

BedknobsandBullhooks · 24/10/2016 19:57

I vape and unless in house where they accept smoking I wouldn't ever do it until I was told it was okay to, I usually just nip outside and if they say 'Oh It's okay do it in here' that's what I would continue to do, I'd never assume I could and certainly wouldn't do it if I had been asked not to. Very rude IMO.

Sorry but until there have been long term studies of their effects, that is simply a bullshit statement. Smoking was considered not that bad until the late 70s and it still took another 20 odd years for us to ban smoking in public places because of 2nd hand smoke.

E-cigs and vaping hasn't been round that long and so there aren't enough studies looking at the long term effects.

legotits Thanks for that. He has observed that fantastically. "Technically it is my human right to smoke vape." 😂🙄

I'll stick with public health England and cancer research who both agree and have issued statements and also workplace guidance for them
Of course not using it would be best but between cigarettes and e cigs, they will always be safer
All the muttering about long term effects just makes people who smoke justify carrying on smoking as "it's no safer"
When in fact it is, and smokers should be encouraged to vape

I heard about a vaping device that exploded and shot bits through the leg of the man who was vaping, the hospital staff said it was like gunshot wounds.

There is no way I would sit or stand next to anyone doing it.

And it is your house, just tell her, if she wants to stay with you, no vaping in the house.

This video contains some disturbing images.
