To think Trump will win

HappyCamel · 22/10/2016 04:42

I'm living in the Southern States. I think he might well do it. Clinton is coming off as seriously corrupt. No one thought BREXIT would actually happen either. What's the feeling on the U.K. side of the pond?

Make no mistake, most of the Hillary hate is grounded in misogyny, as most of the hatred of President Obama is based on racism.

BradleyPooper · 23/10/2016 02:01

Im in texas. Trump may well get in because Hilary is so unpopular. If the democratic had any of their previous candidates running, he wouldn't stand a chance. Many of my neighbors have trump signs in their front yards. Obamas hands have been tied so much over the past 8 years, the President has little real power and ive got my fingers crossed that this continues ...

BeALert · 23/10/2016 02:09

Well of course your neighbours have got Trump signs. You're in Texas :-)

I don't think that tells us much about how the swing states will vote.

loveyogalovelife · 23/10/2016 02:39

It's very scary. The two professors who have best track record for predicting the outcome of presidential elections both say he will win: us.blastingnews.com/news/2016/10/president-donald-trump-emerges-if-history-repeats-itself-claim-2-predicting-professors-001201249.html

loveyogalovelife · 23/10/2016 03:12

Adding to my last post, one professor has perfect track record of predicting winner for past 30 years, and the other one for 20 years... Shock

londonrach · 23/10/2016 03:21

I cant believe usa has to choose between clinton and trump. Im glad i dont have too as both seem bad choices in different ways!

enolagayits0815 · 23/10/2016 03:51

I think he's going to win :( my Dd (13) is counting down the days until the world is going to end if he gets elected.

Toadinthehole · 23/10/2016 03:54

the President has little real power

Unfortunately the President has power over the little red button.

WiddlinDiddlin · 23/10/2016 04:11

I am genuinely scared - even my dad who is normally pretty well educated on these things, now thinks Trump might win, and also appears to think that Trump is actually clever, pretending to be stupid.

This is because he has heard snippets of something and has misunderstood what he heard - (bits of the jokes and digs they were having at each other at the memorial dinner the other night, that radio 4 replayed on PM a couple of days ago)...

Whilst it doesnt matter that HE has misunderstood what he heard, its worrying that there are almost certainly actual american voters who have done the same... plus all the lunatics Trump has riled up with his lies about Hillary, and his wildly exaggerated promises to do things he can't possibly do the way he wants to do them...

Then theres the people who don't want Trump but will not vote Clinton if their lives depended on it (and I fear they very much do) and will vote for one of the other two... which is in effect a vote for Trump anyway...

Its a nice theory that the President has little real power.. but that only applies when the President has some sense, some self control and will listen to others - Trump has none of these abilities as his campaign has very much proven so far.

This looks like a lose lose situation though because I seriously think even if Hillary wins, we are going to see some serious and horrific, violent events immediately after the election (and probably during!).

I think Trump has wound up an army of lunatics, who will believe that the election has been rigged and will take action the only way they know how... violently and with guns... and Trump will of course distance himself from this and claim he never told them to do anything like that... but he has, and he is.

BeALert · 23/10/2016 04:17

It's very scary. The two professors who have best track record for predicting the outcome of presidential elections both say he will win:

No actual evidence of either of them predicting anything correctly other than their claims made on Fox News.

Whereas Nate Silver who correctly and publicly predicted all 51 results in the last election gives Hillary an 80%+ chance of winning.

Yeah, I think I know who I'm believing.

BeALert · 23/10/2016 04:22

All those who think Hillary is a bad choice...

Which of her policies do you disagree with?

She's anti gun, pro women's rights, pro choice, pro health-care for all at affordable costs, pro affordable college, pro maternity leave, anti Citizens United.

She wants to raise top rate taxes to pay for things like health-care and college and maternity leave.

I'm genuinely baffled that so many Mumsnetters think she's a bad choice.

Americans will get the president they deserve.

If enough of them vote for Trump, then that's who they'll get.

They will then have to stand behind this man, as he represents them, with other statesmen and women - who're able to command international respect - on the world stage. He will be their man.

frizzyhaired · 23/10/2016 05:03

We just moved to Illinois. I don't think he will win but it's incredible that it's so close. I just can't understand why Clinton is so disliked.

GoBigOrange · 23/10/2016 05:05

I'm in the US, and if you know anything about college football you can work out from my user name which state I'm in.

I don't think Trump can completely be discounted from the race, but if I absolutely had to bet on the result my money would be on Clinton.

I find that the Trump fans tend to be louder and more aggressive about their political leanings than the Clinton supporters, which perhaps makes them seem more numerous than they actually are.

SpareASquare · 23/10/2016 05:06

Make no mistake, most of the Hillary hate is grounded in misogyny

Absolutely. It started when she did not behave as all well-trained and well behaved public official's wives were meant to. A quarter of a century+ and millions and millions of dollars spent trying to 'get' her and she's still standing. That, in itself, is amazing. Add in the work she has actually done, especially for children and it would have to be a no-brainer.
Except she has a vagina. And the US has decided to show the world who they really are

I don't think Trump would have got a look in if his opponent wasn't a woman. Many would rather have a man like that in charge than any woman. Hilary could have been the perfect candidate and this would still he happening and I don't get the Hilary Hate either.

Bestthingever · 23/10/2016 08:09

The hatred of Hillary Clinton is baffling. It can't just be because she's a woman. Theresa May and Angela Merkel don't inspire the same feelings.
What also baffles me is that some trump supporters think he is the anti-elite candidate. He's a billionaire who has given nothing back to society. He's not even a self made billionaire.

loveyogalovelife · 23/10/2016 08:27

Be alert,

"No actual evidence of either of them predicting anything correctly other than their claims made on Fox News.

Whereas Nate Silver who correctly and publicly predicted all 51 results in the last election gives Hillary an 80%+ chance of winning. "

Thank you, useful information - I do so hope you're right. Biggest challenge with reading things in the US news is that it's all biased so it's hard to work out what the truth is...

MissHooliesCardigan · 23/10/2016 08:36

Seneca That article is really good but bloody depressing. And the bit about Trump cutting off his nephew's medical insurance? WTF?!

LunaLoveg00d · 23/10/2016 08:54

I know that "The Donald" loves to play on his Scottish heritage, so on behalf of Scotland, I'd like to publicly disown him.

We have booked to go to Florida next year. My kids are wondering if "The Donald" will still allow them in as he seems to hate everyone who isn't American. I don't understand the hatred for Hillary either, but do realise that it's a choice between two candidates they really dislike.

Bananabread123 · 23/10/2016 09:31

I think Hillary will probably win, but don't think it's a sure thing.... Having been looking at the polls the past few months, there's an odd trend. Trump does something that most believe is reprehensible... (Attacking veteran's parents, boasting about doing what he likes with women etc.)... Hillary gets a bounce in the polls soon after... Trump reins himself in a little, and the polls narrow, a couple of times bringing them within a whisker of each other.

It's as though many people's memories are so short that they have forgotten what Trump has done/said within a fortnight and decided to back him again.... I find it hard to fathom how so many people's attention span is so short, and are desperate to find an excuse to justify their support for him. It's as though they use the following disturbing logic "ok, maybe he's said and done a shitload of misogynist/racist/idiotic/cruel/undemocratic things over the past 20 years, but he's kind of been acting almost ok for the past fortnight, so i think I'll vote for him after all" Confused.

If Trump had gone on vacation for six months after his party's convention, he'd probably be heading for the White House!
