To think Trump will win

HappyCamel · 22/10/2016 04:42

I'm living in the Southern States. I think he might well do it. Clinton is coming off as seriously corrupt. No one thought BREXIT would actually happen either. What's the feeling on the U.K. side of the pond?

OP posts:
HereIAm20 · 22/10/2016 13:40

I used to live in Ohio and therefore have a number of facebook friends who seem to be Trump supporters and very anti-Hillary Hmm

Friends on the East Coast or West coast appear to be Hillary supporters but I have fewer friends in those areas so it is hard for me to gauge accurately. I am actually horrified that some people who are pro-Trump are as they seem to otherwise be not racist bigots etc.

Also my fear is growing as Ohio is always heralded as a key state (whichever way Ohio votes usually wins). Worrying times.

HereIAm20 · 22/10/2016 13:44

Also the polls I keep hearing reported on over here in the UK are NY ones which will be pro-Hillary and not accurately reflect the country as a whole taking in all those mid-West states that appear to be pro- Trump!

lljkk · 22/10/2016 13:50

But then there R people like my 84yo uncle who is life-long firm Republican. He likes Hillary & shudders at DT. His daughter is a stauncher Republican (real life Wall St. banker). She shudders at DT & will confidently vote HC.

I just filled in my absentee ballot with my step mum, yesterday. We had 40+ things to vote 4, btw, besides POTUS. That's 2nd US ballot this year I had to fill in. I have mixed feelings about how little direct democracy UK has.

lljkk · 22/10/2016 13:50

Florida will decide it this year.

OlennasWimple · 22/10/2016 13:54

Six questions on the ballot paper here, lijkk Smile

PausingFancy · 22/10/2016 13:56

Yes, I think people are voting for change just because it is change, too.

Are any of the non-Trump campaigns actually acknowledging that?

Because if I were the Democrats I'd be running campaigns of #isthisthechangeyouwant? with what Trump has actually said.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 22/10/2016 13:57

My BIL that lives in the US thinks the same as you OP.

To dismiss it as 'daft' or 'won't happen' is a bit naive.

I also don't think people outside of US realise how much HC isn't liked there either.

ihatethecold · 22/10/2016 14:41

Why is she hated so much.
Iraq?
Emails?
What else?

Inkanta · 22/10/2016 14:45

Plus being married to Bill.

That seems to be it!

noblegiraffe · 22/10/2016 14:45

Benghazi

Inkanta · 22/10/2016 14:54

Am I right in thinking the gist of the 'emails' was about her having work emails directed to her personal phone. Apparently classified information. Then when she got caught she panicked and deleted them.

Not clever, but not exactly evil. Within the realms of human sinfulness I would have thought.

DotForShort · 22/10/2016 15:04

I personally know lifelong Republicans who are not voting for Trump. Many high level Republicans have publicly withdrawn their support for him. He is trying to hold onto his base, but even there he is struggling. Yes, there are (unaccountably) voters who still support him. But I hope with all my heart that sanity will prevail.

He was so clueless and inarticulate at the last debate. "No puppet. No puppet. You're the puppet. No, you're the puppet!" He honestly sounded like a furious 5-year-old.

KidLorneRoll · 22/10/2016 15:38

He won't win. I don't even think he wants to win at this point. It's just all a massive ego trip.

noblegiraffe · 22/10/2016 15:40

If he doesn't win and refuses to accept the election result because it has been 'rigged' then fuck knows what that would do to the country.

Inkanta · 22/10/2016 15:56

'I don't even think he wants to win at this point. It's just all a massive ego trip.'

Yeah, that's my theory, that he doesn't want to win, that he wanted to ruffle a few feathers and take it to the limit - and show that he can.

He'd soon get bored in office.

MissHooliesCardigan · 22/10/2016 16:14

Yes, I get the feeling he doesn't actually want to win just like Boris never expected Brexit to win.

Gottagetmoving · 22/10/2016 16:30

There must be better candidates than Trump or Clinton in the US. If not, then the Country is in a real
mess.
What does it say about the mental health of a population if they vote Trump in? The man is at best a narcissist and at worst a psychopath.
I really hope he doesn't get elected.

scaryclown · 22/10/2016 16:32

One of the scary things about first past the post is that the electorate never vote in someone they want..they switch only when they are tired of who is in now. This election is a complete parody of that. It shows that you can almost put a monkey up against the existing party if there is enough dissatisfaction with lifestyles or just fatigue with current leadership, because the only way to get the existing party out, is to switch to the other big party.

its why Cameron resigned..we were getting tired of the etonian boy rhetoric and the cameron era..and he knew that the next election would have been not a 'get labour in' election but a 'make eton tory boys go away' election, so he resigned to get longer conservative presence without an election, and increase the chances of ot 'feeling' like a new government to extend that phenomenon.

Trump stands a good chance simply because of this 'shaved monkey effect.

pensivepolly · 22/10/2016 16:34

It all comes down to voter turnout on the day, doesn't it. As long as the polls are still relatively close, whichever side does the best job mobilising their supporters will win. Look at Brexit.

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 22/10/2016 16:45

As somebody who knows very little about US politics, I really struggle to understand how such a huge country has ended up with a straight choice between two apparently despised candidates?

The prospect of Trump being President of one of the most influential/powerful countries in the world is, quite frankly, terrifying.

I can't understand how people can be so anti-Clinton that they see Trump as the best option Confused.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if he did win though. I hope he doesn't. I don't think him winning would be good for the world as a whole - but I wouldn't be surprised at anything this year.

MrHannahSnell · 22/10/2016 16:49

If the US people give Trump the White House, I would not be surprised if they go on to give the Senate and the House to the Democrats and the sit back and let them all fight like cats in a barrel.

MIlesdavis · 22/10/2016 16:57

I do think she'll win, but I never really warmed to her. Will of course vote for her myself as I cannot even contemplate her opponent. How the democratic process could throw up (and I mean this literally) two such lame candidates is beyond me. Apparently Trump never thought he had a chance - he did it because doing things like this "brings good opportunities" his way. He blocked out his calendar for three months thinking it would bring him publicity and attention and he'd fall by the wayside as the system came to its senses. The system never did. So I've heard that even doesn't want it.

Mummyoflittledragon · 22/10/2016 17:24

"Mummyoflittledragon stay out stay out of this"

Bloody hell why the aggression? It was a legitimate question. No one is my keeper.

kesstrel · 22/10/2016 17:39

According to this, there is a huge difference now between male and female voters, because a lot of women have abandoned Trump. The link shows maps giving the results if only women voted, vs if only men voted. If only women voted, Clinton would get 453 electoral college votes, and Trump would only get 80. It's the other way round if only men voted, although not by such a large margin.

Prostolos13 · 22/10/2016 17:46

I can see how Trump may appeal to some people, but I honestly hope that they would see that he is self righteous, vindictive, short tempered and selfish person. You can clearly see that on all 3 debates. He appears to be a regular people's "friend " at the moment, but make no mistake, if you dare to disagree him, you may see the other side of his personality.
At first I thought him amusing, but when he won republican nomination I became horrified.
I can only hope that people help Hillary win regardless if they like her or not.
He already let us know that he would not accept the results if he looses. Who know what else he may reject when in power?
