To think Trump will win

I'm living in the Southern States. I think he might well do it. Clinton is coming off as seriously corrupt. No one thought BREXIT would actually happen either. What's the feeling on the U.K. side of the pond?

OP posts:
SlottedSpoon · 22/10/2016 08:01

I think you might be right.

although how anyone in sound mind could vote for Trump as a solution to Clinton seeming 'seriously corrupt' is a total mystery to me. She's not perfect but for crying out loud, Trump? Really?

Talk about cutting off your nose to spite your face. Confused Hmm

Mindtrope · 22/10/2016 08:02

I think anything is possible.

I never doubted for a moment that the UK would vote to stay in Europe.. I was shocked at the result. But then I live in Scotland, so I was in my own little bubble of people. maybe we all live in a bubble to some extent.

user1466690252 · 22/10/2016 08:03

I remeber when obama got in a campaign from celebs ect urging people to go out and vote. Is there anything going on there at the moment like it? I feel now for the final push the seriousness of not voting should be pushed by the media?

ZuleikaDobson · 22/10/2016 08:03

Brexit isn't comparable because it wasn't an electoral college vote. If it had been, we would be remaining, because the bigger cities would have had more electors.

Laura222 · 22/10/2016 08:04

Oi DOBSON was that an indirect at me? .... I studied at Cambridge

pinkiponk · 22/10/2016 08:04

You can't compare voting for brexit and voting for trump, post brexit this country is still incredibly liberal* compared to a post trump apocalyptic world.
I agree with you tho op, I think he might do it, it's terrifying.

*we have a state funded health care system, we have an incredibly robust welfare system (compared to the states), we're much friendlier towards muslims (or people, or my friends as I like to call them, not 'the muslims' as trump does) and have the same no as you guys in our must smaller population, we have woman friendly abortion laws... we don't have capital punishment, I could go on.

WelshMoth · 22/10/2016 08:04

Laura222 of course you did.
I rather expected that comment

So, TM has ordered assassinations and dominated policy that has resulted in about 10 million people dying?

Meh.

Laura222 · 22/10/2016 08:04

Pknkipop you're turning the situation I to a hyperbole

Laura222 · 22/10/2016 08:05

WelshMoth I know you think you're the biz but no I did

AnythingConsidered · 22/10/2016 08:05

I attended an Economy conference this well and ALL the panels leaders (inc names you would know and recognise) believe he will win.

They claim the polls are wrong as people are lying - it is not fashionable to confirm you will vote for Trump, so people are saying they won't, when they actually do.

They also said the reality is the party will let him do very little, but rather get a strong team around him who will do most of the work on the international stage.

Mind you - they also said the European Zone NEEDS us to have a soft exit, a recession will hit the UK in 2020-2021, euthanasia will be legal by 2030 to help with the aging population issue and interest rate will start to rise in 2017-18 as 'normal' is 3% above inflation, so they could just be spouting rubbish!

Hassled · 22/10/2016 08:07

Yes, I was similarly shocked re Brexit. All I saw on FB etc was Remain - but of course that was because one's FB friends are going to be like-minded, and your interests/liked pages are going to be a reflection of you. The only exposure I had to Brexiters was on MN, and that just didn't seem real enough to count. I was insanely naive - but that naivety could well be present in this election. People will assume not enough people support Trump, without really understanding the mood of many people.

WelshMoth · 22/10/2016 08:09

Laura222 you have no idea what I think.

Anyway, OP apologies for slight derail. I agree with pp in the sense that I don't really understand why the American public hate Clinton so much - I know there are claims that she turns a blind eye to poverty and supports the affluent 10%. Why do they distrust her so much?

chattygranny · 22/10/2016 08:10

After the last general election and Brexit I have zero faith in polls, how are they still in business?
I'm terrified he will win. My DC's ILs live in the deep south. Trump could do almost anything and they'd vote for him, because he's not a democrat. They seem a nice family but see the world very differently. Pro guns (when visiting their DC in London they hardly go out as they're so afraid as the police don't have enough guns), anti abortion (in any circumstances) anti Muslim, bible bashing, also very ignorant of the world yet they're wealthy and successful, it's quite astonishing.
I only hope if he gets in that his wings will be severely clipped by the senate or that even worse revelations will happen and he will have to be impeached.

Chatty- I agree whatever he says his supporters don't seem to care! The pussy grabbing was the clincher for
Me, I thought here we go, they'll be a revolt, but no!
And I agree with your comment about the senate, it's clipped obama's wings (unfortunately- gun laws for e.g.) so hopefully will do the same to trump. Lots of intelligent people with plenty of experience in politics, it'll be ok.

chattygranny · 22/10/2016 08:15

My DD's MIL starts talking about aliens, we thought she meant little green men but of course she meant immigrants. Also I think most of us don't understand how much the republicans see everything upside down to how we see it. So they revere all the presidents we thought were a joke like Reagan, the Bushes etc and HATE Obama and Bill Clinton. The polarisation is enormous.

Mummyoflittledragon · 22/10/2016 08:16

Laura. What hyperbole?

I think the biggest similarity between TM and Stalin is that they've both been called submarines. Stalinets was a name of deference though.

WelshMoth · 22/10/2016 08:16

They also said the reality is the party will let him do very little, but rather get a strong team around him who will do most of the work on the international stage.

That scenario is a relief to here, but even then, whenever the man opens his mouth, he says something else offensive, or something which shows that he is an utter baffoon. The "you'll be in jail" comment in the 2nd live debate still makes me cringe. A man like him can't be puppeted- no matter how good the team, surely?

WelshMoth · 22/10/2016 08:18

here

InTheseFlipFlops · 22/10/2016 08:20

I was thinking of flying over to America

"Hi, this is my first visit but I'm standing for president. I figure you needed another option, since your two are shit. So, vote for me. I've not got a clue what I'm doing, but I don't think I could fuck it up any more than those two"

Imagine trumps response "get your guns, the British are coming"

travellinglighter · 22/10/2016 08:21

If it was any other republican candidate then Clinton would have been dead and buried by now, if it was any other democratic candidate then Trump would have been dead and buried by now. We across the pond see Clinton in a very different light but then we aren’t bombarded by Fox News, we are very lucky to have the BBC which at least pays lip service to impartiality.

I think she’ll win and the Democrats may even take back the senate. Hops so anyway.

TheNaze73 · 22/10/2016 08:22

350 million Americans & they get to choose between Clinton or Trump. What a sad state of affairs

ColdBrew · 22/10/2016 08:26

Republican politicians including his own campaign staff wouldn't be walking away from him if they thought he had a chance.

Bananabread123 · 22/10/2016 08:26

Brexit isn't comparable because it wasn't an electoral college vote. If it had been, we would be remaining, because the bigger cities would have had more electors.

I don't undertstand the logic of your view... The electoral college gives votes to individual states in proportion to their population. Cities are not over-represented. If anything rural, isolated areas are... States get a minimum of 3 electoral college votes, even those such as Wyoming with a population of 500,000.... Compared to California with a population of 50m-odd with 50-odd electoral college votes.

CheerfulYank · 22/10/2016 08:26

Well I'M certainly not going to vote for him.

That's the best I can do, I think.
