To think Trump will win

HappyCamel · 22/10/2016 04:42

I'm living in the Southern States. I think he might well do it. Clinton is coming off as seriously corrupt. No one thought BREXIT would actually happen either. What's the feeling on the U.K. side of the pond?

This article is hopeful.

CheerfulYank · 22/10/2016 09:47

We can't really be THAT hateful of a country. We voted Obama in, twice. We're better than Trump. We HAVE to be better than Trump.

user1466690252 · 22/10/2016 09:58

Cheerful yank, I hope so, I think you are. I think both candidates aren't great, but Id like to hope that people will think bottom line like you. We have to be better than trump

Rosa · 22/10/2016 10:01

OK its a small representation but I work a fair bit with Americans ...The majority just say we are doomed as who ever gets in its bad for the country.
Mind you where I live in Italy we had Berlusconi twice so honestly there are people who vote for idiots....

NameChanger22 · 22/10/2016 10:05

Nothing would surprise me after Brexit.

People will vote against their own best interests just because they want a change, any change, even for the worst.

Most people are very easy to manipulate. I'm hoping the American people give it a lot of thought and he doesn't get in. I think many people in the UK are worrying about it.

Aeroflotgirl · 22/10/2016 10:20

very that's not true, some women are still going to vote for him, like my Aunt and cousins, I suspect others will. I saw on some election programme, that some black people like him.

AndNowItsSeven · 22/10/2016 10:22

He won't win.

margaritasbythesea · 22/10/2016 10:30

My American family- who are Democrats - tell me they are actually quite relieved he won the nomination as his policies are less right wing than thise of Cruz et all. Not that they want him to win but it is awful to think he is actually the less scary version of what could have happened. And he is less likely to win as he is less credible.

It will still feel like a terrible thing if he does win though.

SirChenjin · 22/10/2016 10:37

I have an awful feeling he will win - a lot of people keep quiet about their true feelings until the ballot box (both in the Scottish and EU referendums the Yes/Remain were very vocal in their 'rightness') and I think that the 'Hilary' vote will be split because many people won't be able to bring themselves to vote for her.

lljkk · 22/10/2016 10:38

yanbu b/c complacency re Trump, we have learnt, is very bad thing.

If Trump shouts something, many people believe it, no matter how absurd. Why?? Why is he their champion, argh.

earlyrise · 22/10/2016 10:46

The polls are lying and the mainstream media is not reporting the the facts. Trump is an idiot. But he had a lot more support than we're being told. He's filling mega-stadiums and Hillary is struggling to fill up high school auditoriums. Every day more leaks are being released and Hillary continues to alienate more and more supporters. I used to love Hillary, with all the leaks I've seen on Twitter, I've changed my mind now. I think she's awful. Trump is a nightmare. The whole thing is mess.

TheWoodlander · 22/10/2016 10:47

Brexit was a frightening reminder that polls are not always accurate, as was the 2015 GE.

But, I don't think he'll get in. I have faith in our good American friends - it is scary how close he is though. He is a complete psychopath, unhinged, vengeful, aggressive, misogynist, racist.

My DD8 has asked me a couple of times "Would Donald Trump like me? " and I don't really know how to answer her. a) yes, he'd like a cute blonde British little girl, or b) I don't think Donald Trump likes anyone.

I think he will try to cause a lot of trouble if/when (!) he loses. He's already setting the stage for that now - does anyone know if there's anything he can actually do?

cozietoesie · 22/10/2016 10:48

It's too close to call.

VestalVirgin · 22/10/2016 10:52

My DD8 has asked me a couple of times "Would Donald Trump like me? " and I don't really know how to answer her. a) yes, he'd like a cute blonde British little girl, or b) I don't think Donald Trump likes anyone.

You can't tell her that, of course, but the answer is c) No, he hates you, because he hates women, but he would probably say that he loves you to get in your pants.

Sorry, but the cutest blonde British girl would still just be a potential rape victim to Trump, I am pretty sure.

I am really frightened that Trump will win. Because Brexit, and because he does have the majority of the MALE vote, according to some polls I have seen, and wow ... American men really hate women. Sad

cdtaylornats · 22/10/2016 10:59

Look on the positive side if Trump wins the UK no longer has the stupidest voters in the world.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 22/10/2016 11:02

I genuinely don't think I'd want to vote for either of them. Clintons emails make her look awful, Trump is awful.

I am concerned that nobody will want to vote for any of them and that means it's anyone's game.

DinnerIsDrivingMeBONKERS · 22/10/2016 11:10

Too close to call. Either is worrying.

StepAwayFromTheThesaurus · 22/10/2016 11:12

I don't think it's the Americans (well some Americans, certainly not all) not seeing through trump's anti-establishment claims is all that surprising. Look at all the British people who seemed to think that a ukip led by Nigel Farage was somehow anti-establishment. Trump is using the same stupid arguments as Farage did to pretend to be 'a man of the people' and I'm not surprised some people are lapping it up.

Mishaps · 22/10/2016 11:13

We can only hope not.

TheWoodlander · 22/10/2016 11:23

God vestalvirgin, you're right, and I'd never even thought of it that way. This is the man who'd said he'd be dating his own daughter, and completely objectified her when she was a newborn baby. Ugh, he is repugnant.

The reason I don't think he'll get in is because of the electoral system - he can't win over the swing states, similar to the way Nigel Farage could never get a seat in parliament that he desperately wanted, because of the FPTP system.

But the sheer number of Americans who seem to support him no matter what he says or does is frightening.

GiddyOnZackHunt · 22/10/2016 11:25

I've had this nagging worry all along that the US electorate will vote for a man, any man, over a woman.
I remember being convinced he wouldn't get the nomination but saying that even if he did get the nomination, he'd be moderated by Congress and the Senate. Whilst Trump may win on a platform of 'different' he still had the same system in place and that system is invested in the status quo.

TheHubblesWindscreenWipers · 22/10/2016 11:47

I think he still has a chance. Which is terrifying.
The most frightening thing about him is actually not his raging misogyny/racism but his lack of self control. he cannot control himself and no one who lacks iron self control should be in charge of the nukes...

It's certainly shown us how dignified and intelligent the Obamas are though - shame Michelle isn't running ...

noblegiraffe · 22/10/2016 12:06

There is a guy who accurately predicts elections not using polling data but stuff like who controls senate, the state of the economy, who is the incumbent and whether they have done their two terms. His analysis shows that the republicans should win.

He then goes on to say that although this election should be the republicans to lose, it's possible that Trump could lose it because he's such an extraordinary candidate. All bets are off.

OlennasWimple · 22/10/2016 12:57

I am in the US, and know:

  • Republicans who loathe Donald but would never vote for Hillary because of who she is
  • Republicans who loathe Donald but would never vote Democrat because of what that means (not all of them think that Democrats are one step away from communists, but a fair few do..)
  • Democrats who will not vote for Hillary because of who she is
  • Democrats who will vote for Hillary with a heavy heart because she is female
  • Republicans who will vote for Hillary with a heavy heart because she is female

Such an interesting mix, it's pretty much impossible to call how it will work itself out. Add in the incredibly biased news coverage here (Fox is pretty much "How is Hillary evil? Let us count the ways" and glossing over all but the worst of the Trump stuff) and I can see Trump winning Sad

It will be interesting to see the proportion of Hillary / Donald Halloween masks next week Grin

Noofly · 22/10/2016 13:26

The people of Maine voted in the most Godawful Republican governor, LePage, several years ago. If that can happen, Trump can happen.

And I love Maine! Went to college there! Am also Republican, but not this form. I don't recognise any of this.
